Hunting Deer

Recommended Posts

So, while I'm out hunting, I've often left wondering whether it was worth keeping this or that carcass, collecting this or that pelt... so I made up this bit of a chart, to help me decide what to keep.

The values in the chart are the amount of materials each carcass provides.  I've done deer, perhaps people can update it here and there, to include other kinds of animals (eg. Bison).

Carcass *

I have the wagon, but I've been in the situation where the wagon is full, and I need to remove something.  Do I keep that perfect Pronghorn or the perfect Deer?  Which pelt is worth more?  The idea of this chart is to answer that.

Bighorn pelts are pretty good in value. Perfect is 3.44 to Cripps, good is 1.65 and poor is worth 1.1.

Perfect Buck pelt is about 4.04 or something to Cripps. Perfect Pronghorn is 2.50 or 2.60 I think. Sorry, going from memory

Perfect Grizzly/Moose pelts are in the 9 dollar rangeish, don't remember exactly. Elk is 7 or 8?

Beaver carcass is about 6ish. Wolf is about 6ish also

Most valuable carcass is Panther, then Cougar, then Buck.

Most valuable medium carcasses to stow on the side of your horse: Perfect Muskrat and Spoonbill worth 5. (Don't remember if Snowy Egret is up there too or not) Then Rabbit and Badger plus other 3 star exotic birds, Pelican worth more out of those. 3 star Owl/Condor/Hawk/Eagle are in the 4 dollar mark.

I always pluck the birds though for easy filling to Cripps with the feathers so my medium list is

Muskrat - Rabbit - Badger

Raccoon/Skunk/Goose are worth 3.13

If you shoot a 3 star Duck/Loon or Cormorant with small game arrows those are worth 3.44

Then it's Iguanas and Armadillos, maybe 3.13 also?

Worth least are Opossums, 2.80ish

Perfect Quail shot with small game arrows is 3.44

Banded Gila Monster skin is good value

Interesting.

So where do turkeys live on the list?

They're pretty easy to find and bag, often in multiples, quite easy to maintain value, and I always assumed from their size that they are worthwhile for materials.

Perfect turkey gives 2.50

I almost never go that far.  If my wagon's filled with three star carcasses then unless I bag a three star cougar I just switch to hunting two and three star hides until I don't feel like hunting any longer.  Since it's something I enjoy I don't treat it like a process where I need to maximize efficiencies.  I'm also not tremendously fussy about which carcasses I chase.  Yes, I'll take the three star buck with my first shot in a herd vs the doe but that's about as far as I take it.

Pelican I so rarely get, that I remember to skin that for that stupid "seasoned exotic meat" daily, that might come up ;)

Having my moonshine shack(heh, called it "ranch" for some reason; wishful thinking? ;) )/camp around Hennington's stead, the bulk of my animals that count for Cripps trade in are:

Pronghorn, since up to 4 spawn if you throw a rock or squint slightly.

Perfect wolves, since Cripps really likes the resupply where "... traders did not make it, you should see what happened to them", and sometimes at the end "... be careful..." Then I bust out the Hunting Wagon, getting them or their skins, before throwing the supplies on the horse.

I've also had a couple perfect turkeys pop up around there, oddly enough, when other things are not spawning.

My supplies bar fills up pretty easily.

I’m not sure how to link to a topic, but in the Frontier Pursuits sub forum, there is a pinned topic called RDR2:O Breakdown- Roles : Moonshiner, Bounty Hunter, Trader, & Collector. In the first post is a great spreadsheet with tons of info, including animal material values for Cripps.

I do nothing but Whitetails, Pronghorns and Cougars.

by the way, does a wagon with 5 3* cougars fill the butcher table to the max?

Do not underestimate the value of smaller creatures such as rabbits and raccons. Two at a time can be stowed on your horse alongside a larger carcass, additionally their pelts and feathers are put directly into your inventory and can be donated at any time. You can carry a very large supply of them to help keep your camp business well supplied.

DentureDynamite

I usually don't bother storing carcasses (which fall off if your horse is inept) or pelts anymore, but I do grab whatever small animals or meat I can "pocket".

You can store a lot of it, no player can steal it, and it won't get knocked of your horse. I figure it helps offset the cost of Fast Travel expenses, if nothing else.
