Pushing the L.A Noire Franchise Forward

Foreword

Due to the several apparent rumours circulating the internet recently on top of a video made popular by GVMERS, I feel like it is an adequate time to write down my thoughts about a potential sequel in the L.A Noire franchise and how I believe Rockstar can move it forward in a way that’s fresh and exciting.

Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2, are among the best-selling games over the last 10 years. And now, Rockstar is highlighting some of those successes and noting that its two marquee games combined to ship 150 million units worldwide.”

Venturebeat.com

Both of Rockstar’s staple franchises, Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption are both mega franchises in gaming. With a new release now looking to be every 4-5 years, it is likely that Rockstar are looking to their other IP to fill that void and build another of their franchises into the 20 million club. That’s where I think an L.A Noire sequel can come in.

Having sold moderately upon release and only recently boosting numbers with VR and switch releases, LA Noire made up for weak sales with it’s revolutionary visuals and mechanics. For a game that was optimised and developed for the PS3 generation, it was quite a staggering feat. Coined by many, including GQ magazine as the game that nearly changes the industry. It’s a technology that if introduced to a game that aligns with Rockstar’s current capabilities - would be mind blowing.

A lot of the games functionality and arguably the whole point is to serve the technology that was on display. I truly believe that the franchise lies in police investigation and I think this is something that absolutely needs to be carried forward into future installments of the franchise.

But, I don’t think we should be locked there. The IP sits in a dark area of being owned by a game development company that no longer exists. So what can they do? A suggestion I think is adequate is for them to take the series someplace new, in time and location. Whilst maintaining the core mechanic of psychology and police investigation.

“These days I think we would love to set a game in the UK, set in London, whatever, but I don’t know if it would be a GTA game. I think there are plenty of great stories we could tell about the UK, great environments to showcase, great gameplay mechanics that could have a UK bent to them – I just don’t think it would be a GTA necessarily.”

Dan Houser

The UK has a rich history in serial and crime drama surrounding police investigation. It’s pretty much all we make our TV shows about. Shows like The Bill to more recently shows like Luther.

But there’s a show that sits within this genre that is far superior than any other and even sits for many people as the best TV drama series ever made - Life on Mars and it’s sequel Ashes to Ashes. Shows that are really evocative and sit well with Rockstar’s synergy.

It’s an excuse for Rockstar to explore London. It’s a way to carry on L.A Noire in a way that feels fresh and new. Let’s take the police investigation to a new time and place. 70’s London. It’s a time absolutely rife with new culture and something that would be worthy of a new installment. The idea of a new time and place each game is compelling and I think an interesting idea for the series. Here are a few images to help those visualise, those who have no knowledge of the time and place. Sourced from various British crime cinema based from the 70’s-90’s.

A spiritual successor to L.A.Noire is a game that I'm wishing for, especially since it'd be completely developed at R* studios. Although it'd be realistic to think that such a title could make it into the 20M+ sold copies club, T2/R* mightn't be keen on the idea on the basis that it cannot be taken to the Online club, at least not in a form that would provide them with the long-term returns that they aspire to. Grand Theft Auto 6 is definitely next, but what comes after it? The safer bet would be a new Red Dead title.

Cole to Cloe?

The best way for a gaming company to profit is to release the least amount of games possible, it seems.

The title itself is quite restrictive. You have Los Angeles as the setting and the 40s and 50s ass the period. So 70s London would be something completely different. Of course it doesn't have to be same title, obviously, it can be just a spiritual successor under a similar name. I would be open to see what London has to offer though.

I think LA Noire was a very special game and not for everyone. R* nowadays are aiming to create experiences for the masses. These massive projects that attract everyone. So I doubt we'll see a game of that caliber again from R*.

They should've done a tie-in like they did with The Warriors; Miami Vice. Cruise around 80s Miami solving crimes and interrogating folks in hawaiian shirts and leisure suits
