I've actually had people HELP me with the moonshiner wagon, which made me paranoid. They rode past me and killed the revenuer guys ;)

........

I've had this happen once, it was a posse of 3 or 4, and they rode up alongside just as I left the wooded road from the shack and crossed the tracks at Emerald.

They surrounded the wagon, and I thought 'yep, here we go', and it was hard to not point my guns at them since I was using that feature to maintain course and speed rather than take a bunch of bumps and/or bash into the other players.

They started sort of taunting because I have 2 guns, then when it was clear I was aiming away from them on purpose, they decided to help out at the roadblock, rode ahead and killed the revenuers, then claimed the loot as their reward, which was fine with me.

I didn't really need the help, but I certainly wouldn't begrudge them their loot.

I went on my way, they went on theirs.

I've also accepted an invite to someone's shack for a round of drink serving, they then initiated a shine sale, so I left the shack and rode along killing pursuers as best I could.

I didn't get a posse invite so there was no pay, but they were lower level and I felt good about helping them.

I later spotted a camp in Big Valley near where M. Nazar was, and got closer to look, as I had a deer on the back of my horse, saw it was one of the posse members from before, so I got off and dropped off the deer for him, waved and turned to go.

He waved thanks, and I went on about my business.

My experience has been generally positive regarding the player base, so I don't mind helping out lower levels when I can.

Not looking for a pat on the back, it was inspired initially by someone offering an excess deer to me as I was just riding by, so I'm trying to repay the favor and hopefully foster the idea that other players aren't all scumbags.

Plus, I know it likely irritates the griefers to see the rest of us get along. (and we ARE in the majority)

I stay within their sights when I help, and I take care to never aim in their direction. This way I am an easy target if the other players feel a bit intimidated and I want them to see this. And if they do shoot at me I simply ride away, no harm done. I guess I'm more of a helping hand in this game than a gunslinger. Getting those thank you messages is really neat and I believe that doing this gives the players the idea that not everyone they are going to encounter is out to get them. That there are players out to actually play the game in it's entirety and not just use it as a target the players gun range.

I've come to the understanding that I am more of a helping hand than a gunslinger. For example one time me and my daughter were playing and we were bored so when a stagecoach with passengers rode by we figured, let's play bad guys and rob them. I rode up to the side of the coach and was just about to pull my gun when the young lady inside waved and wished me a good day.  Needless to say Ruvik left the gun in the holster, instead I gave her a tip of the hat and both me and my daughter rode away, heavily disappointed in our ability to actual play an outlaw.

So it's clear that I am not even close to being able to comprehend why players choose to randomly shoot another player for no reason.

But that all can change if someone gets on my bad side, I know how to play this game dirty too. 😉

I do the same when I'm on an NPC killing spree: if they say 'have a fine mornin, maam' then they get a pass.  🤠

If they say stuff like 'there's plenty of road, so I don't have to share it with the likes of you' they get plugged.

And regarding other players, I'll give the benefit of the doubt.

If they turn out to be sh*theads, they get to eat explosives and fire for a while.

It just takes up too much time, though.

Yeah, I'm always a bit concerned about that, mainly in fear that they ruin the perfect deer, so I park my horse a fair distance away (no weapons readied either), then pull the deer off the horse and run over to them.

It's best if you can place the deer on their horse, but usually their access is restricted, so I'll drop it on the ground nearby, give a wave, turn and go.

If someone's running toward you carrying a deer on their shoulder it should be really obvious they're not trying to be a threat.

Never been shot yet, though often the other player has turned out to be AFK in their camp or just sitting in a field on their horse, so I don't know if the deer remained long enough for them to pick it up, or if they even noticed it.

Ideally I'd want to see someone going about tasks in their camp, that way you know for sure they'll see the gift.

DentureDynamite

All this talk about donating animals to other players has motivated me to try it tonight. :)

I was happy to see another player grab the pig skins I left behind recently at Flatneck Station, since I rarely bother with them anymore. Fat for explosive anti-griefing rounds has more value to me.

BTW, I didn't know until recently that Pheasants are another source of fat if you can't get pigs or ducks to spawn--kind of odd, considering you'd think that they wouldn't, but the duck-like Loons would...

Geese are good for it too, and you can hear them easily when they're nearby.

Also wild boars in LeMoyne are pretty common and not too fast, easy targets out in the open.

Donating's not as easy as it sounds.

Last night I rode by someone's camp and he was home, about 100 yards farther on I found some deer, I shot a nice 3* doe and headed back to the camp and he was gone.

There was a player at Emerald Stn. but he was starting up bounty, so that was no good.

My camp had full materials, so I had to call my hunting wagon to stash the deer in the end.

So... after the day I had yesterday, constantly finding Cripps injured, my wagons constantly being blown up by hackers, my character being blown up by hackers, my character unable to enter my moonshine shack, finding no Marcel or Maggie when it DID let me in the shack, constant disconnections...  I wasn't sure I was going to bother trying to play today.

But, I decided to go ahead.  Spent 20 minutes waiting for the verification to let me log in.  Finally did so.  Logged in where I had been, down in New Austin.  Literally 2 seconds in, some ass shoots me for no reason.  I'd JUST logged in, I hadn't even had time to MOVE, and some jackass and his posse of 4 other guys are shooting me.

Really makes me wonder if I should bother.

You must play on PC. I have the game on both PC and Xbox and the xbox crowd is much more tame.

You are just setting yourself up for misery playing online on PC. I only bought the game on PC to mod story-mode, my online experience on xbox is much better.

I'm pretty sure it's on game-pass now too.

I thought about this thread yesterday. Only thing I feel bad about is the death of those poor horses!!

I had just logged into the game and I always select "Free roam - New Hanover" to login. I call for my horse and mount up on a random road somewhere in the east heartlands. There is a NPC-wagon coming towards me and the NPC is talking his usual BS about moving out of his way, so I move to the side of the road and let him pass by.

At this point I had now opened my menu screen to reform my posse, then backed out and opened the map to find my camp. I like riding to camp and hunting along the way there so this is why I don't choose to spawn directly in my camp.

Well, as I am looking for my camp to set a way-point my controller starts to vibrate, the screen starts to shake, and I hear my horse scream out in pain!! lol So I back out of the map and find myself on the ground next to my horse, another horse and a player who had just ran over me. The other player also had a posse member with him who had not ran me over but was just there still mounted on his horse.

Now I don't know if they did this on purpose or if it was an accident, however I do know that as soon as I stood up they BOTH started firing at me. So I jumped on my horse who had also gotten up and took off down the road. I look down at my mini-map and notice that they are both chasing me. Well, I guess I have no choice... :)

I equip my trusty pump-action shotgun and load up the incendiary shells. I didn't even look at my health - probably should have popped a potion but it turns out I wouldn't need it anyway.

I turn around and head right back at them like an old school joust. I really don't think they were expecting that at all. As they road towards me I saw that one of them was about 5 horse lengths in front of the other (probably the friend, not the one who ran over me as that guy had to remount first) and I aimed right into the chest of his horse and BOOM his horse was set afire and blown to the ground as the rider flew off and made a run for it. I spun around and blasted him in the back, catching him on fire and causing his toon to scream in pain as he fell over dead.

I looked at my mini-map and noticed the other guy had took off running for his life on his horse (this is probably the one who ran me over) so I gave chase. I noticed I was gaining ground on him fast and that's when I realized they were noobs with basic starter horses. I caught up to him and he started swerving left and right and I missed a few shots. As I finally pulled up behind him he moved right and BOOM I put a shell into his horse's ass and it launched the player to the ground. I came around to find him trying to save his horse and that's when he got a shell to his face....

I took off and left them stew on their actions. I have to say - it was a blast and one of the reasons I like the mixed player types in the same session.

Lol, when they saw you coming at them they probably had a change of heart. And lately I've had a bunch of newer players try to mess with me too, they must be from the game pass and just trying out a new game to play. Seriously don't know how they think that messing with higher level players is going to go well for them? There are times that I feel bad for demolishing the ones who are adamant to continue to fight with me but it's their fault that they just don't walk away, I always give them that opportunity. 😉
