Marketing move

Hello, this is a thought I had, with the GTA V being Free on the Epic Games Store and what user TezFunz2 said on twitter, and how this might be related to GTAVI.

I what today Rockstar did was more than gifting GTA V, I think this had 2 intentions:

1. To see how popular is GTA right now

2. To give more interest to GTA series

I have to say that this move from rockstar gifting the game, in opinion a really a big surprise, I wouldn't have expected that from them, and this could be a marketing move from them to give more popularity on GTA, and more people would have their focus back on GTA, like it was announced or released. If you think about it, this new about GTA being free had a lot of influence and it has been spreaded through social media a lot, and if they see that they can have that and more, this could be a great time to announce GTA VI, because this would still be in the middle of a big surprise, and if GTA VI is announced, think how big could it be, if with only GTA being free was crazy enough to make epic games server "fail" think about GTA VI. To compare it this Rockstar move of making it free could be like a small explotion, and everyone with that small explosion is alert, but if they soon announce GTA VI, that would be a MASSIVE EXPLOSION that would bring the attention of even more people, more than the people that was already watching the other explosion and sharing it. And why would they do that now? Why not before? Why are they doing so many things with GTA? So many questions... I think that we should expect a GTA VI, because this more than a Rockstar gift this is a marketing move.

First, sorry if my orthography isn't good, my mothertongue isn't english.

Second, this is a personal thought and expeculation, this isn't a leak, if I broke a rule, admins please don't ban me.

Third, I don't know if explained my self bad, I'm writing this really late, and I can't think clearly, if I haven't been clear enough please let me know, I don't have problem on writing another explaining myself better.

Fourth, I'm not an insider, and my twitter for any questions is this.

It means nothing. Epic pay for the games they giveaway, Rockstar are being paid for this, just like they get paid for putting their games, like GTA V and RDR2, on services like Games Pass and PS Now.

GTA V has sold over one hundred million copies and set concurrent player records over the holidays, there's really not much to gain from the EGS giveaway from a research perspective from Rockstar. It will most likely just be a case of them getting paid for this, and getting people into online where they can buy microtransactions.

There have been devs and publishers that have given away games when a sequel is on the horizon but given Rockstar's typical time between announcement and release, which is two years, them giving away GTA V this week and announcing GTA VI anytime this year would be... poorly timed, to say the least.

I think a GTA VI announcement is going to make a massive explosion no matter what. I don't see giving GTA V away for free really affecting that in any significant way. If anything, I'd say they're gearing up for some sort of GTA Online announcement.

I personally think the next GTA will probably be revealed sometime in the next 16 months, but I don't think this has much to do with anything besides Epic wanting to get ahead of steam which will never happen.

Definitely has to do something with GTA VI. Give GTA V for free???? Only means that they are cooking something big.

I know they got that big check from Epic Games, but this can mean that they wanted to release the game for free on Social Club Launcher and Epic said "no no bruh, lemme get all that users and traffic in exchange for this $10Million or more".

People think!!! Ain't no sh*t is done without consequences and without plans. Big news are comming!

I think they gave away GTA 5 for free and are bundling all older GTA games to milk any last sales of shark cards from new players and switching to a microtransaction model where the game is free but all the toys of online cost money - like fortnite. Rockstar probably sees gta online more profitable than the game itself so they're probably just trying to get as much people in online as possible. I think we'd get a 6 announcement sometime this year

"doing something big"

"it's happening"

"something is up"

"things is happening right now"

These sayings have no meaning. Rockstar simply reveals the trailer with no prelude or consequence. I think it's just a simple business opportunity as both companies are for-profit organizations.

First of all, you are quoting me wrong as I didn't say any of that. Looks like you are trying to give me words I didn't say. Silly.

Simple business opportunity? This is GTA V being for FREE. One of the top games in history for FREE. Ain't nothing simple in here. Think harder and don't @ me if you gon be quoting whatever you like.

Or, this is Epic wanting to get people into their store during a huge sale.

If you pick up GTA V on the EGS you get a free $10/£10 coupon, which combined with some of the sales they have creates a whole bunch of record low prices for some fairly recent games like Metro Exodus, Control, Borderlands 3 and others.

Lets also not miss the fact that next weeks free game is also a mystery game, indicating that they may have another big game lined up next week.

It's marketing alright, but it's not Rockstar's.

Calm down a bit, I quoted your comment literally, it doesn't contain any added parts that you wouldn't have written. And it's free for players, but costs a lot for Epic to have GTA5 for free on their platform. It's business. The player base is booming.

Even though Epic paid for the release, it certainly won't be at retail prices. It's still a significant markdown in revenue for R* compared to conventionally selling the same number of units. This can happen when a product is nearing the end of its life and a new line is on its way.

This does not necessarily mean that Six is coming out anytime soon though. Suppose that R* have data to show that a typical player stays the most in GTAO, and buys the most Sharkcards, for an average of two years (for example). They want to keep as much of the new player base engaged and invested in the GTA world for as long as possible, so it makes sense to time a giveaway two years before Six comes out so that you keep that new cohort onboard up to the handover point from Five to Six. It is better to have a maximum number of new players repeatedly opening their wallets for that optimal amount of time than not at all - and then they'll walk straight into Six like everyone else.

If (a big IF) we see a similar giveaway on the consoles soon then I'd say we can read this as a much stronger signal.

GTA6 or not, also consider that this move quickly squeezes more drops of revenue out of an ageing game. R* sees more of their old player base return less often every time a new AAA title comes out from a rival studio. DLCs and all other developments are delayed this year, so giving the game away generates another chunk of revenue and brings a new wave of players into the game - but it's not just about the base numbers of players online. The newer players with less cash-generating in-game assets are more likely to be the ones who buy Sharkcards compared to, say, a player with 300RP and every business going. I'll be interested to see the retention rates for the new wave of GTAO players, but I can guarantee that it will be lower than even a few years ago. For a game as old as Five, you have to bring in an ever-growing number of new players to sustain revenue.

TLDR:

The timing of this move might tell us something about Six, but if so it probably isn't coming out soon. Also, noob players spend the most in GTAO.

Well, its enough if R* tweets a dot. Even internetless human in the middle of forrest close to nowhere will hear about it. So i think its not for attention, more for they get paid cause of free V.

Epic is the type of company that pays developers a lot of money in favor of featuring them on their own platform. Thanks to them being very supportive, a close relationship is formed with the developers and that allows them to do huge sales on some games to the point of offering some games for free.

I highly doubt this was a marketing move by Rockstar, more like the other way around.

I reckon this means we will not see anything GTA VI related for atleast a few months. Realistically Rockstar would like people to purchase their shark cards and people need time to rank up so they're incentivised to want to get certain vehicles and they're more likely to do that as they invest more time into the game.

There is no third party organisation that operate outside of Rockstars own marketing plans that could sell their games more than they do off their own back. GTA V had a $128m marketing cost. That combined with their notoriety means that they sell games like nobody else. Marketing cost isn't everything. As Modern Warfare 2 has the highest marketing budget at $200m, but has only sold a minute amount compared to GTA. Game quality matters too.

I don't like the fact Epic bought Control exclusive on 1 year from Remedy. I want to play it on Steam instead!

Makes sense but still it wasn't rockstar that decided to give it for free but epic that paid them. Otherwise it would have been free on steam and on their launcher too.
