GTA V Free on Epic Store, do you think Online will suffer?

Recommended Posts

Pedriko

It's official: GTA V is free on Epic Store, a move to probably increase the platform popularity. Do you think that now, with everyone having acess the online mode will be different, positively or negatively? If yes how, and how much.

I don't play video games on my PC because I'm a sensible guy who tries to work.

If a free version becomes available on console, the only difference would be even more random noobs and casual players, which may affect stability and loading times in full lobbies due to old fashioned peer-to-peer networking. But after seven years, doesn't everyone have a copy by now?

I have paid for three copies of GTA V over the years, essentially buying a two-year online subscription each time, so I have no qualms if it becomes free to play in 2020 and beyond. As far as content and popularity are concerned, there won't be any noticeable differences until GTA VI finally hits the shelves. Mammoth games like Fortnite have been FTP right from the start, and people play it in droves because it's really imaginative, constantly developing and fun. Sometimes I buy my kids Vbucks, just as millions of people buy shark cards to boost their GTA online bank balances.

As for people saying micro-transactions are killing the gaming industry, etc., it's too late for that sentiment, at least in GTA 5. You get free entry into the zoo, but if you want to see the animals then you have to stay inside for hours on end or cough up some real cash.

Just edited my post because I now realize that this post refers to PC gaming, so good luck with even more random hackers and menu abusers. Maybe it's being given away for free because it's not worth that much any more or not generating enough revenue?

Somewhat off topic,

Is there a subscription fee you have to pay for epic?

I have no interest whatsoever in pc GTA online, but I wouldn't mind playing with drip feed cars and having an easier time making crew colors. Especially if I could get it for free.

Yes you may do that, just keep your logins for the social club separate or install as a different user.

None whatsoever, come and get the thing.

I think it's just a continuation of already established trend where GTAO goes freemium at full force. More modded accounts may resurface, but honestly speaking, they are already available dime a dozen so it's not the supply issue, it's demand driven market for sure. GTAO is new players game, there's nothing to gain for day one players. For me it is the decline, but at least we have played the game when it was new and we were younger.

The more I think about this point, like if it's a success and what-not. The closer I feel that I'll be saying goodbye to story modes as T2 push for an online only game basically like RDRO. It's a good time to really test that Fortnite way of things with next gen looming. Chilling!

Yeah, definitely not a good prospect for those who prefer single player games. Well, at least gaming is on the decline for me so if online games are going to be the new norm, I guess it'll signal the end of playing games for me.

There's obviously the cheater issues.

This will also give any old players who got banned an incentive to come back. I know at least one such person.

There will be a lot of new players still. Problem is that at this point gta is as beginner-friendly as wild horse.

In extention, there's a lot more momey begging again.

And then there's skilled lvl1s who are just veteran players starting an alt account. I know I am. Maybe play two characters at the same time now

At this point, no. Online is already a sh*tshow.

No, I'm not planning on grabbing it. I don't play GTA Online as much as I used to, so the game will just be needlessly taking up space on my computer.

Nothing will change. A few new noobs, nothing else.

A few in my crew will pick up this free copy and run it on old pcs - using them to host firewall blocked public lobbies for crew and friends.

I reckon over half are gonna get banned for modding Online. I can bloody see it.

Regardless, I told a few of my friends and they got it :) No need for me to get it again (besides the big download) 😛

I don't really cheat/hack in any game, that will be unfair.

Yes, CSGO turning free is one example, however their anti-cheat works much better and is largely autonomous.

GTA online on PC is hacker infested and it will only get worse imo, how much worse? No idea, especially since every damn lobby I have been in has had hackers.

Thoughts in chronological order:

-Sweet, I'll grab one in case I totally lose it one day and I go for that rusty tractor.

-Hmm, Epic's 2FA requirement won't slow down game license hoarding much, so some will end up with tons of these.

-If it's still possible to pump up accounts under the radar (and sell them), some of these people just got an early XMAS gift.

-Everyone who's always wanted to try modding (in a very popular video game no less) but has been to afraid to try can now grab hoard some freebies and see what they can get away with.

-Assuming the next iteration of the game is still miles and years away, this promotion gives tons of free ammo to modders of all levels out there. I think it's fair to say R* mod radar isn't quite up-to-date. IF modders who like to guck up with everyone's game become more common or IF modders find new ways to guck with everyone, and R* doesn't have much of an answer, history may remember this as the moment when R* totally gave up on PC.

In CS:GO you can't get rid of hackers if you want to play competitive for example.

In GTA:O you can, through an empty public session and so on.

Jesus, I didn't think about it like that. Now with sh*t loads of people on it they might end up trying arena wars and it being less of a ghost town :D

Seemed busier than usual when i logged on this morning.

Full lobby which is nothing new but lots of players on foot battering each other and repeatedly trying to open my car doors which suggests they were probably new players.

Expect a lot of banned players to be back, until they get banned again.

Wanna wreak those sh*tbags and throw them back into Fortnite? go to Cypress Flats extermination. its the tutorial level for teaching players how to play jobs,, I liked to troll them by ramming them with bikes.
