Unpopular opinion but I really enjoyed Mafia III... if only there was an update using Mafia Definitive Edition graphics and vehicle manual mode

Finally played MAFIA: Definitive Edition, and must say it's a damn good game. Not perfect, none of these games ever will be, I swear MAFIA games have this curse where they're always being rushed by the publishers.

So the graphics are awesome, the game has this nice color palette that evokes nostalgia or feeling of being in the 1930's. Cutscenes are even better, the facial expressions, little details here and there, reflections look better and the overall presentation is... how MAFIA III should've looked liked on release. Me, personally I believe that the problem with III's retarded looks is that originally they planned to have a static weather, day/night cycle that was predetermined just like in past games. Later they went with a dynamic weather systems and that's why the game loses it's sh*t when the weather or time of day changes, because at certain times (clear night) III can look good. I think that's why Definitive Edition has selectable times of day in Free Ride.

Hangar 13 took some shortcuts though and reused a lot of buildings and assets from III, this one is the biggest problem for me as in basically two cities have the same building.

wkCIwmn.jpg

fjzrm5b.jpg

The building on Tommy's left is actually in MAFIA II, some minor houses are also reused from New Bordeaux. Also the new super tall skyscrapers are mostly from New York, Woolworth Building and 1 Wall Street, making Central Island really look more like NYC instead of Chicago.

0IOxmqe.jpg

Lost Heaven looks good regardless, trams running the street, elevated trains, even a zeppelin flies above the city and few small planes. It's just a shame you can't ride trains like in the original. Which brings me to the gameplay, and it plays mostly like MAFIA III. I'm glad that they gave Tom some new animations though, it would be weird seeing him devastate his opponents like Lincoln.

Driving is fantastic, played the whole game on simulation and I had a blast taking corners and shifting gears myself, handling is weighty and you feel like driving these steel machines. Some folks complain about brand renames again but let's face it, MAFIA games always drop the ball on these issues. Ford was Bolt, in II Smith. Smith had a Thunderbolt model but then it became Moray. In Definitive Edition we have a Bolt and Smith so take it as you will people. Honestly the series always had their lore/world problems, ever since III came out and real world city names were mentioned it's like... we have New Bordeaux but then radio says something happened in New Orleans, and story mentions New York and Chicago, like why.

Free Ride is back, there's few missions here that will question my sanity on Classic. Collectables are back, some hidden cars, racing is available and taxi missions, there's bunch of nice alternative outfits too. Shame Tommy can't spawn at his house but at least mission letters act as fast travel option to some phone booths around town. Also bus stops will always take you back to Salieri's.

Now for the story I would say it beats the original, sure some missions got that "hollywood" touch with the chase and a lot of unnecessary shootouts, but the performances and voice acting is superb. Tommy conveys much more emotions now, for example when he gets home after the botched deal with the Canadians Tommy looks lost, his mind is racing, stressed. We can always tell he's struggling in his head, also his banter with Sam and Paulie is great. I know some people are annoyed by Paulie's nasally voice but hey, all the characters were redone with perfection, always felt invested more than in the original. The only thing I would change was the ending monologue and just put back the original one.

In the end MAFIA: Definitive Edition is a great remake, and it saddens me that III will never get properly fixed even thought both games work on the same engine.

I never had too much of an issue on Classic difficulty honestly. Sure, certain missions like A Trip to the Country were a pain at times bt honestly it overall felt way easier than I thought it would be. Most of the time I was fighting the free aim since Tommy tended to wave his gun too far or not far enough at times but I guess that somewhat makes sense given what hanger 13 did to differentiate him from Lincoln.

I find it kind of weird how different the countryside looks compared to the city. Lost Heaven is recreated almost 1-for-1 from the original game but I can tell the countryside has a way different road layout. The bridge Morello can die on in the original is located in a different place and you can't go onto it due to a collapsed tree blocking the path. The farm house from Ordinary Routine is way closer to the tunnel and the farm from A Trip to the Country is closer to Little Italy compared to it being near the Morello bridge in the original game.

Fun fact, there's apparently a car called the Smith Thrower in the game. It's different from the Smith Moray in that it's based on the car's original design Vito drives in the ending before the car got redesigned in Mafia II. Only thing is that you can only spawn it with console commands, shame since it would be a fun secret car to unlock.

I'm talking about these Free Ride missions, one of them where you have to dump 3 cars in to the water, time restriction on it is ridiculous. As for the country side, I don't know, for sure it was redesigned. The river, lake all of it is in different spots, it feels like they definitely didn't put as much work in to it like with the city itself.

Speaking of cars by the way, does anyone know how to get these ownership rewards? I own a regular MAFIA III on PS4 that got upgraded to DE, and MAFIA itself. Both on disc but I can't access any of these outfits or cars in either game.

Asking the same question, maybe we need to own them digital.

I tried to look for answers online, not much luck. All I saw was "own a copy and the car will be in your garage"

Either way I tried reinstalling both games, and deleting save data for both (before backing them up), not much luck.

Oh yeah, I literally did that mission today. The time restriction was a real beast until I knew you had to dispose of the cars outside Lucas' garage since the game never says that's where you dump them. It took some trial and error but when I found that ramp I managed it on one try.

I also got to drive the boat in tonight's session, I drove around the harbor a bit. They must've planned for you to be able to drive boats regularly at some point in development considering how the boat performs perfectly and the boundaries out on the water exist. You can only drive around the islands though. There's a boundary that prevent you from going to the lighthouse or countryside by boat, but the dock area to the southwest is missing quite a few textures.

Boat? mods right, or is there a way to glitch it on the consoles because I see these bastards on the water. I went out of bounds in two spots, one was a Youtube video where you jump a rock and get over the fence. The second one was by sheer luck when I was collecting those 50 hidden Foxes, behind the dinner from that chapter "You Lucky Bastard", just hop over the railing to get the fox, you can actually keep walking on the edge of those rocks and get behind all the cliffs in Oakwood.

You can get a boat easily using this method. It take really precise timing but it's possible to do. It only took me two tried to accomplish.

Well if try Vintage Formula in Project Cars it will be much harder than this. Personal advice for those who struggle, use manual gearing, take turns on 2 and burn it all the way. You'll need third only at chicane, and on oval turn at finish line. Break with multiple short inputs, you can even carry a lot of speed into a corner off throttle, car slows down good on second gear, plus turning input affecting rolling breaking.

Completed it on third try, only because surprise on chicane exit on the second, so then try to not go wide:).

So far game looks and plays smooth, apart some shuttering, broken textures and floating objects here and there.

This doesn't really have anything to do with Mafia though.

Just compared it with PC in first sentence, but this shouldn't nullify the whole post, doesn't it?

This is just a little bump but I feel like I gotta give credit for Hangar13 for this genius solution because it is really funny. So you remember that Salvatore in the remake speaks Italian and thus Tommy doesn't understand him. But what if you set the dubbing to Italian, how did they handle it there? Well they made him speak Sicilian which differs from Italian so much so that Tommy would indeed have a problem understanding it.

That's a nice touch.

I wonder if the Definitive Editions of the trilogy have any special enhancements on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S? I suspect not, though, at least, not now.

Its almost year after Mafia:DE release and i still have very positive attitude towards this .

I have some big problems with this .Here are they...

City, I expected after Mafia 3 city to be fully exporable and without any small limits. Well, no... Many interiors are mission only, no functional public transporation(Original Mafia made in 2002 has it working.).

Im train sucker, I expected some trains to be scripted on train tracks. Guess no, train station is even without train tracks...

This city again acts like movie scene, to living city...

As I admire story, my biggest problem is Lucas Bertone... Thankfully he is not utilized in game, but he acts like creep and weirdo... In OG he was very friendly and helpful...

No DLC, that game needs story DLC. My kind of DLC will be with Don Peppone and young Morello and Salieri. Missed chance, because it think it will sell really good.

MAFIA DE was a great DLC to MAFIA III🙂

I'd say it was kind of a standalone expansion pack to Mafia III.

Mafia DE was to Mafia 3 like what Vice City was to GTA3.

That's the best analogy I could come up with.

Are there any plans to upgrade the trilogy for Series X/S and PS5? It would be nice if it got the native 4K/60fps treatment.

I wish, but they haven't said anything about it for now. Looks like Hangar 13 is focusing only on their next title.

Ah.. that's a pity. I still bought it just now anyway.  Hopefully they release a patch eventually.

To make matters worse when they released the trilogy they accidentally got rid of the XS/PS5 upgrade and now the current version of Mafia 3 is stuck on the sh*tty version... even though they say they fixed it.  Really too bad because the XS version of 3 was pretty slick.

*I take Mondays off + I'm currently laid up with the shingles(can't even express the discomfort), so I'm making today Mafia 3 day to see what the current state is since I can't seem to find a satisfactory answer to my question - "have the xs/ps4pro enhancements been fully restored"?

My unscientific measurements still tell me they haven't been even though there is 1 article out there saying they have been.

Starting with an install of the non DE version of 3 to see what happens.

E:

Killing me.  I'm on a series x and I can't get Mafia 3 past version 1.0.0.18.  What the...?

Double post for angry update.

I just installed Mafia 3 on my One X to see if maybe it was a Series X issue, and it too is stuck on version 1.0.0.18. !!!

Of course they both load with the DE title screen!  They should be ashamed of themselves.

I feel like Mafia DE was made partially to recoup some of their losses on Mafia 3, which would probably explain why there were so many reused assets, animations and no DLC for it.

Just bought Mafia DE on PC.

Only played for about an hour if that, and it's been a collection of issues already.

The screen tearing is mad even with VSYNC on, the part right near the start when you run from the gangsters I climbed over a wall and entered a part of the game clearly not meant to be seen, and then got stuck in an invisible box surrounded by unfinished textures and had to reload checkpoint, then I went to look at my settings to see if I could find a way to reduce screen tearing and the game froze completely and crashed...

I've just bought this game a few days ago. I originally played Mafia on the OG Xbox but wasn't super impressed, even though I thought it spoke to me. I was too much on that Vice City/San Andreas buzz that I was looking for another free-roam/open-world game. All games I played remotely similar to GTA was compared to GTA's insanely high standard for me, so it didn't stand much of a chance.

Fast forward to now when I'm more of a mature gamer and even more a fan of Mafia culture and games in general - I think this is one of the best games I've played. The cinematography for the cutscenes is fantastic. It just keeps me glued to the story. While I at first I thought Tommy Angelo was a bit dry and lacking character, he does grow on you and I've learned that I prefer characters in games that aren't so chatty and brash like Rockstar protagonists (with the exception of Arthur Morgan). Tommy Angelo is the strong, silent type - he did what he had to do.

I'm still not finished the story but it's been one of the more engaging stories I've played recently. I know I loved Mafia III but I didnt' have so much attachment to the original game, even Mafia II which I did complete at the time but also felt it a bit lacking. I thought Hangar 13's ideas were admirable, even if they fell short. But I'm certainly more sympathetic to those that didn't like Mafia III not being played from the mafioso's perspective and even them trying to make it more open world. Yeah, some games don't need to be open world. I'm appreciating that now. A small map, a rich story and more interactivity and functionality in the small sandbox is OK.

I still think open-worldness activities and strong story narrative can co-exist. It just hasn't been mastered yet. I suppose GTA's always come close.

I'm currently re-watching Boardwalk Empire which is the best TV show and probably best motion picture title that covers prohibition era; as it has not just Atlantic City but we see New York and Chicago. It's also based on mostly real life characters; young Al Capone, young Lucky Luciano and Arnold Rothstein (Jewish mafia). The first season is slow, setting the world up and setting the characters up. It's more of a slog to get through but the pay off is great. Season 2, 3, 4 gets much better. I noticed a huge leap in lighting and set design from season 1 to 2. Also, it's produced by Martin Scorsese himself and created by Tim Van Patten (The Sopranos).

Some good action in the cat-house..like the brothel mission in Mafia, only this is more violent, lol

Superb dialogue pieces in Mafia just like in BE.

I'm currently replaying the game. It's been a year since the release, and I still stand this is one of my most favorite games ever, up there with GTA IV. Definitely fills the void that GTA left in me when they went to please the absolute lowest common denominator of gamers. It's a shame this series will never be as ambitious as GTA ever tried to be, due to Take Two. But honestly, I see that can be a good thing. GTA died from its own success, let's just hope Mafia doesn't die because of the exact opposite instead.
