Mafia: The Trilogy

Never played the first Mafia, but played the second one originally and that was amazing. But if there's one Mafia game I ever felt that needed some retouching, it was their latest... I think the Mafia 3 had a deeeep story and characters, amazing atmosphere and interesting DLCs, but it was the only game I had ever played that felt "unplayable" due to it's graphics and graphic bugs; shadows and the sky blinking all over and it looked like they had forgotten how to create chrome (chrome bumpers being like distorted white) I honestly thought my PS4 was broken or something, had to try other games to see how they would work and I also tried reinstalling the game. I made it somehow more bearable by adjusting the TV's color etc. settings.

I wonder how much better the "Definitive" version of M3 is, I heard it's the least touched? Would be interesting to revisit the Mafia 2 tho.

(All this just makes me sad to think that R* could be remastering the GTA IV and it's DLCs, instead of remastering the V over and over and over again 😩 Also because as a PS console peasant it's so difficult to play GTA IV, my PS3 is long gone and only the V and 3D trilogy is available from PSN to PS4 )

M3's so called "definitive edition" is just all the dlcs and addons are being added to the game with no other improvements then call it a day,it is just a free upgrade for original owners;M2 's remaster version upgrades the textures&lighting and other small stuff, don't know if u own the original ps3 one ps4 will auto download this version or not ,but it certainly ain't something that worth 30 dollars for original owners to revisit it again.Besides these "definitive version" have introduced some new bugs too...

They added taxi fares to Free Ride in the latest update, hop in a cab and drive around - someone will call you out and a blip on the radar will appear. A fun little addition.

Neat that was in the original game as well. Do the passengers chat with Tommy like they did in Running Man?

this game was awesome!! great story, great characters, great city. it was also kind of refreshing that is wasn't a straight up open world game and instead just went mission to mission. idk i liked it. had a phenomenal time with it. will probably attempt classic mode and see how i do.

i hope they add some DLC. i'd love to play in this city some more. maybe a prequel with a younger Salieri and Morello.

definitely hope they are working on a 4th game. some hints suggest somewhere in an LA bases city. im with it. if they go LA hopefully it's set in the 50s. if Vegas then the 70s. they have 2 new cities to work with so hopefully we get some more mafia games in the future.

The Mafia 1 remake is a damn fine game. Aside from H13s issues with mirrors (they better fix this for the next game lmao), the changes to the story gave a lot more depth to the characters. Vavra was butthurt (then again, he always is lmao), but the story was mostly far better than the original. I guess the only major gripe I had was with the ending,

Sam's speech and death were both far better in the original.

I HATED the f*cking race mission (I played the game on classic from the get go, with manual transmission). I probably spent more time on that mission than on the rest of the game combined lmao. Heck, I nearly won on the 4th attempt but the c*nt overtook me on the straight (I was trying to block the bastard, too!).

The gameplay was solid, and the driving was good fun. A good sign of things to come with Mafia IV. I just hope that they improve on detail, especially on mirrors.

Can you switch between manual and automatic gears with a button like in the original?

No, from what I observed they don't.

i really liked how in the ending scene

Spoiler

how Tommy says "yes?..." because he's under witness protection, and Vito knowing his name, he knew he was done and was at peace with it. in mafia 2 during that scene he just says "Yes?" like the mailman is looking for him lol. really liked that touch in the remake

also idk if it was explained

Spoiler

how did Salieri find out about the bank job?

I assume they got the guns from Vincenzo  who told Salieri, pretty silly since the original had an entire sub-quest where the duo go to get guns so this kind of thing wouldn't happen.

Sam told the Don about the bank job in the original and it also seems to be the case here.

He decided to turn on his brothers in arms and let Salieri know that he had a hunch about who did it.

Theres a don peppone model and also a model for a younger morello. If a model for younger salieri is found i think this basically confirms a dlc lol i hope

But then how did Sam know? I know they mentioned it with him but how did he know Tom and Paulie went through with it?

He went by Paulie's place to check himself most likely. Saw the money and nailed his buddy.

After that, there was no doubt left.

Well it was a big bank robbery sh*t was probably all over the news. Lost Heaven isn't a big town.

Pretty much this. The idea that Sam wouldn't be able to put two and two together after Paulie expressed interest in robbing that particular bank mere days ago is rather silly. It doesn't help that Tom and Paulie don't wear masks in the original.

So anyone completed the game? How would you rate it from 1 to 10 and why?

I did. Three times. And I f*cking love it. Best game in years for me. You don't often see games of this scope set in such a rich period of history like the 1930's. It's a fully focused crime game without too much unnecessary bloat, more in line with GTA IV which is my favourite GTA game. I would like it to opt for GOTY, but in my opinion not being an original game and having Cyberpunk 2077 around the corner will make it very difficult.

Id rate it a 7.5. Would be higher but theres not alot of replayability, i know they tried to make it true to the original but it feels dated in ways i feel like they couldve fixed with this remake

Finally got the game. Even when everything is set to minimum this game looks amazing.

Edit: Well it lags. Not the unplayable type of lag once I close Discord in addition to other stuff but it's not smooth. Still, it's playable

Edit 2: Taking a break at Fairplay where you have to drive to Bertone. The game so far is alright. The cars don't handle like in the original on classic (obviously) they seem to drift a lot but at least they feel heavy while drifting so you can't really correct or navigate in the process. Throwable weapons are a joke but the gunplay is alright (so far I only had experience with a peashooter pistol and the shotgun) and you can actually die a lot faster than in the original. Love the immersion, especially collectible newspapers, real images and stuff. Also I found the theme for the work quarters from the original game on one of the stations, cool addition. Oh, and the game looks stunning, even on minimum.

Maybe you already know, but you can switch to Simulation driving, just like in Mafia II and III. I do agree, though, that Mafia II has slightly more realistic driving and more weight to the cars in general. I've also noticed that if you keep pressing R3 (on PS4) to look back when driving a car, the game stutters like crazy, and I'm not sure why that is.

4/10

The 4 is mostly for the graphics. The story is pretty much the same as the original. Some things are handled better, some worse. Overall the additions are pretty bare-bones and barely worth mentioning. Salieri is the only character who gained some character development. Sarah has more scenes but she's still not a real character. Paulie is completely different from the original version. Some people are gonna like him. I didn't. Sam is a wooden box of a character. He's just sort of there. There's a bit more to him, but not enough, really. Tommy got the short end of the stick. He's a bit more realistic as a gangster, but holy f*ck he's so unlikable and shallow, it's f*ckin' pathetic what they did to him.

The real culprit that makes this game such an awful experience IMO is the gameplay. It's a reskin of Mafia 3, only worse. Just like in Mafia 3 you only have two guns, which is boring and none of the weapons feel like they're in any way, shape or form unique. They sound terrible and shooting them feels terrible. There's absolutely no fun to be had in any of the firefights. None of the weapons feel authentic at all. They're just things that you point at enemies and click until they die. It's so shallow and poorly made. And the AI is brain-dead.

Cars handle like modern vehicles even when you choose simulation, which takes away from the immersion completely. The cars are one of the biggest reason why I never felt like the game was really set in the 30's. The other reason is the fact that the city is just empty. There's nothing to it and it doesn't feel lived in. You can't enter any stores and buy stuff like you could in Mafia 2, which contributed a lot to the city feeling alive. Instead you have an empty city filled with cars that only look old, but handle like they're from this century. Even Mafia 3 didn't have this problem.

I tend to not notice the music if it's doing a proper job, or I notice it if it's really good. In the case of Mafia, I noticed the music because of how absolutely awful it is. I think that might be the first for me. Apart from some of the tracks that play during cutscenes, every other piece of music that plays in the background during gameplay doesn't fit into the game AT ALL. It's just random noise that does nothing to add to the atmosphere, to increase or decrease tension, to put you in the mood for a firefight or stealth or driving. It's undoubtedly the worst musical score in a video game that I can think of.

I could go on and on, but I think you get it. Graphically nice to look at, but ultimately a boring, soulless experience that fails to understand what made the original so popular.

I don't think there's any fuel mechanic in the game. I never experienced it.
