Mafia: The Trilogy

Picked up an old PS2 copy of Mafia 1 from Amazon for about $8.  First off God damn is this game old but I'm still enjoying it. Even though it takes place in the 30s I can't stop thinking of 2002. I just hope the remake is good.

Not Mafia Remake related, but here's a great interview article with Music Supervisor and Composer Jesse Harlin on Mafia 3. Apparently they didn't want to include too much funk since they didn't want to turn the game into Shaft or Coffy. Kinda funny in retrospect considering the soul station has the most songs in-game. They also talked a lot about the Southern blues influence on the dynamic score in the game, which is honestly pretty underrated.

I just hope the Mafia 1 remake and Mafia 4 will achieve the same level of quality in licensed music and original score.

Any negative experiences so far? I have heard that the console ports are considered worse than the PC version for some reason.

Loading screens. I think there are more loading screens in the console version than the PC version.

Personally I never played Mafia's PS2 version. My brother did, we have a non-legit copy of it somewhere. Recently I watched a video of it and it doesn't look very good.

Wow this looks very butchered graphically and it looks like some early beta version but I guess that is the price of a PS2 port so I shouldn't shun the game over that. At least it has a minimap which is a hundred times better than the radar on the PC version.

Another benefit of the PS2 version over PC is the racing mode. You can do races all over the city and countryside, and with each win you unlock more cars and tracks to use in races. I heard It was meant to be on the PC version but it wasn't finished by the time of release, so it was replaced with Free Ride Extreme. Some Russians tried to mod the racing mode into the PC version but it's very glitchy.

and some gameplays come next week

someone please start a game of mafia2 with hard difficulty and check red light with police (with medium difficulty nothing happen)

Absolutely fantastic. This is what I have been expecting and they delivered. As for Mafia 2 I remember playing it on hard and the police was a bit blind to red lights and speeding. Not sure whether that was intentional or just a bug.

I like what I've read in the article. It's not gonna be a walk in the park for those who want it that way. Good.

Doesnt sound like it, even in Classic your health will regenerate up to 20%, according to the article

Wish theyd add classic mode to Mafia 3!

Nice to read that they're committing to replicate the challenge of the original game, but I will likely play it on a Moderate setting. A lot of time has passed and challenge in games isn't my cup of tea anymore. I will there for the atmosphere, story, world building and the occasional shootouts.

The PS2 controls also help.

Any news on wheel, pedal and H-shifter support?

The original had it (along with force feedback), I am SICK AND TIRED of open world games not having wide support for wheel and pedals etc, it makes no sense for me anymore. Mafia 2, Mafia 3, all GTA games no official support for wheel and pedals......its a joke.

I bet that the Mafia I remake will not have it, because ...."insert lame excuse"....

How do you exactly play a game like this with wheel and pedals? I'm talking about the non-driving portions of course. I sense they don't do it because like it or not, people with steering wheel and pedals are a tiny portion of the market. Most people (myself included) can't afford them for various reasons.

I think people disconnect it or grab the keyboard when it comes to the non-driving parts. I don't really see reason why the original had wheel support aside from a few minutes of more realistic driving. I don't think it's gonna have wheel support.

I have played the original several times with wheel and pedals no problem. Fair that most players do not have wheel and pedals but playing a game like this using it adds much more immersion for sure.

Using mouse and keyboard along side wheel and pedals depends on wheel base size etc and your layout. The immersion for Mafia I is not only the "aside from a few minutes of more realistic driving" in which you possibly refer to the race I do not know, but for me its the driving itself that makes up much of the Mafia games. The cars are basically characters in the game considering how much  you use them.

I get what you are saying but I never really felt the need to use the wheel for the cars. Yeah they all handle differently and have their own quirks but I still can't imagine much of a demand for wheel support. Of course I am not against it, if they add it then good on them and the people who want to play it with a wheel.

Okay yeah I'm starting to see why the PS2 port is terrible. This game looks ugly compared to the PC version.

It looks like an N64 game on PS2 lol.

Hangar 13 will start giving out limited versions of the game to twitch streamers starting August 26 with the first 5 missions being accessible. With Mafia III, review copies were only given out after the actual release of the game. It's safe to assume they're pretty confident in what they have to show this time around.

Sounds good, hope someone is playing it in classic mode, really wanna see what the game can do. If they didn't add any new mission between the original first to fifth mission that means the fifth is Fairplay. Wanna see people do that.

The youtuber Sexy Biscuit got a copy, she just finished a playthrough of the original Mafia. Hopefully she will record while playing in classic mode.

Gonna check it out, interested what completely new people to the franchise have to say about it.

I made a mistake actually. They've decided to mess around with the order a little bit. Here's the list of the missions. So basically chapter 1,3,4,5 and 6(Fairplay) and 11(the one from the gameplay trailer). I guess the second one is too boring to show :)

Can't wait to see someone attempt it on the hardest difficulty.

I can't really defend this objectively, but the bad graphics on the PS2 didn't bother me at the time. Honestly, the cutscenes still looked good to me, as did the city. The loading screens kill the replayability though. Especially since a lot of the early stuff is full of cross map journeys.

The lighting doesn't help everything looks dark. I did the Church mission before my disc decided to tell me f*ck you and during the cutscene you can't see Tommy's face at all lmaoo.

I think the Xbox version might be the better console version.
