R* maps are never perfect copies. If they adding that island I would assume they would use regular roads, maybe even combine couple different real life locations into one.

I designed a quick concept map of what a Catalina Island expansion may look like. In fact I think even this would be too large if we ever got something like this but whatever. I really liked CommanderBlack’s idea of naming the island after Claude so here’s St. Claude Island.

Pretty big, I reckon IF we were to get a small island expansion for starters prior to next-gen, it'd probably be more the size of, (if a little bigger than), The Desert/Sandy Shores section of the LS mainland.

 

Think a Desert + Alamo Sea sized land mass.

So where did the Catalina island concept speculation come from? Who mentioned it and why? Just because there are islands around the west coast doesn’t seem like a legitimate reason to believe Rockstar would add them no matter what’s on them. I still haven’t really known why that’s been the talking point for the December update. Was something found in game about it?

I agree it's pretty big. No way we'd get something that large but it was fun putting this quick thing together.

We're talking about the December update because Rockstar mentioned the following in a Newswire "Later this year players can expect more big updates for both games, including some exciting new extensions and augmentations to an existing role in Red Dead Online, and the biggest ever update for GTA Online, featuring our latest take on Heists in an entirely new location."

As to where the idea for Catalina island came from, well initally there was debate about LC being added into the game but then mods on this forum started dropping hints. We don't know if the hints are real or not, but they seem to be pointing to Catalina as the expansion.

Besides the cock-teasing from the staff around here, the in-game unlockeable tattoo that came with Gunrunning I believe?, the tattoo doesn't resembles anything already existing in the game's map.

So the speculation is that the entirely new location could possible be an island, which is also the perfect last big update for current gen until next gen drops.

The less optimistic folks say it could just be the Mile High Club getting finished, which is a valid perspective too, given how poorly Rockstar words their newswires, "entirely new" could mean anything coming from Rockstar after what they pulled with RDRO.

The staff site started messing around with the site logo on threads related to GTA Online, and people figured out they were putting super-low res images of Catalina Island in the skyline silhouette. And given the top names on this site have a habit of knowing what the next major DLC will be months in advance and drop hints... that's where it came from.

 

Although there wasn't much complaining going on when the thread went through the Crying/Salt name change... so... mad conspiracy time;

- the island expansion has been pushed back and we'll be getting CnC next due to how things have played out.

- due to the idea that LSSS is the CnC dripfeed, the CnC update will have no dripfeed... therefore, it'll upset fans again due to how minimal it'll seem.

 

Only problem with that conspiracy... Rockstar have already announced a Heist is coming this year, rather than "Soon"... unless CnC was going to be incorporated into Heists 4, in a freeroam lobby with the APB alert like I suggested...

I was just wondering how the Catalina island rumors/speculation started in here myself. 

 

I was thinking it was sprinkled in here intentionally to snowball into a large discussion that spills into Reddit and Youtube. Perhaps to get us to warm up to the idea, and not be disappointed or outraged that the DLC would not be Liberty City, as some of us had hoped. 

 

I don't know how I feel about a new small island like Catalina. I guess it boils down to how it's executed, and how immersive it will turn out.

This is exactly how it got started… it would be too much work to add LC with all the voice acting and radio stations etc. it would be easier just to make a island off the coast of Cali, I think it would be pretty cool just to have more space to explore and to see how R* would do it.

Damnnn great job! You put a lot of work into it.  Tho I think its waaaay to big. And too close to the main island.

If they srsly adding catalina and I would had to guess I would say it would be 2-3x smaller. More like this:

Best case scenerio? The town probably woudn't be bigger then paleto bay+vespucci canals+mirror park (most likely it would be the size of one of those) 

But ofc it could be a tiny island with a single mansion as far as we know.

Just like in GTA III, Vice City was foreshadowed as an easter egg, so I guess time doesn't really mean anything as much as you point it out.

My 2 cents on how we got here:
- The "the biggest ever update for GTA Online, featuring our latest take on Heists in an entirely new location" line is interpreted by many as "MAP EXPANSION"

- Half the people that make that assumption somehow seem(ed) to think we're getting LC, then a bunch of people explained why that would be crazy (the amount of time it would take, install size, etc etc)
- Somebody coined the idea of Catalina Island "small island off of the coast, exists in real world, would be the perfect spot to finally add those elusive villa's, etc"
- Everybody started screaming, modmins started modifying the subforum thumbnail a bunch of times to fuel this idea
- Here we are with "1000% sure we're getting a whole new f-ing island because we said so" while realistically we have nothing to go on at all besides the usual wishful thinking and speculation, but thats why this is the speculation thread  

 

At any rate i'll be more inclined to believe the Catalina Island angle vs the "oh they're going to bolt the entirety of LC onto this"-angle, but honestly we might've gone 'off the tracks' at the very start of this already, its R* we are talking about, and technically the last few dlc each introduced an 'entirely new location', i feel like way to many people are getting their hopes up way too far, yes i would love Catalina island or something similar just as much as the next person, but be honest to yourself guys, what actually are the chances of that happening? 10-20%? at most.

They only did the teasing AFTER people were bringing up Catalina a month and a half ago. Read that again. So who FIRST mentioned Catalina and why.

Alright so the tattoo is one thing. But again the mods have been teasing AFTER someone started hype about Catalina.

 

What I’m getting at here is that everyone jumped on a hype train because of someone’s wishlist post about Catalina Island when there’s really nothing solid pointing to it unlike the LC speculation.

I'm not sure who mentioned Catalina for the first time. But I think @YELLOW CAT WITH A CONE was probably the second/first person who posted the idea (at least from what I remember). Not sure tho. I guess you could look for the word "catalina" using the search bar.

I get everyone is excited to see an expansion and what’s coming, so am I, but some people are going extremely over with this Catalina thing because the mods are messing around.

You know what I've just remembered lads? Today's Wednesday, event week speculation?

 

The only thing I'm interested in right now is keeping an eye open for another "challenge"... like with this week we got Complete all 6 Yacht Missions as Host for a T-Shirt next event week. They did the Complete 10 Daily Challenges In A Week twice earlier in the year, so it would spice up the event weeks if "Weekly Objectives" are going to become a more frequent thing.

 

Also, Rockstar... Log-In Bonuses, throw in some more Gunrunning, Doomsday and After Hours Vehicle Liveries from time to time.

See but people that “explained” have no real credibility to say those things like they know what’s going on. LC has been worked on at some point in the past a few years ago so that means we have no idea how much they actually have done. It could be 10% 20% 80% done already. They’ve had plenty of time to decide what they wanted to do with that project so for these people to come on here and say, ‘ iT wOuLd TaKe ToO lOnG ‘ are clueless deniers. They have no idea what been worked on. If some one says it was a project at one time 3 years ago, how are you gonna come here and say without any proof that it’s never gonna be added?
