Retro_Causality
Michael, Franklin and Trevor all had different animations, different animations for car jacking etc. but they had the exact same fighting style..... they could of differentiated it a bit. Franklin, faster hands...Michael being slow and big, Trevor being dirty (groin strikes) simple stuff like that
El Penguin Bobo
Trevor did have two extra attacks and that was the headbutt and his stomp (when you had rage mode enabled) Other than that, their attacks were pretty much the same.

The only thing that are realistically "console limitations" are the limit to actual used values/maximum values itself. (and recorded/made sound files which are heavy on the storage). They either were lazy and just didn't care/thought about it too much. Algonquin Assassin

Algonquin Assassin
Melee in general is pretty disappointing. I wasn't expecting anything like The Warriors or Sleeping Dogs, but why remove the bad arse counters like GTA IV? I even like melee in San Andreas more. I rarely get into fist fights in GTA V because it honestly feels sh*t. Atleast if they had different fighting styles it would feel distinctive instead of copying & pasting the same disappointing melee 3 times. Quite honestly, the GTA games never really got melee perfect except for maybe VCS. In IV, there were a lot of badass moves but it always felt so slow to me and I can't dodge on time to do a finishing move so I always end up getting my ass kicked. In V, it was faster but too fast to the point where it ended up having way less attacks than IV and NPCs can go down in one punch. In SA, only problem was, once CJ learns a new move, he instantly forgets the other moves he just learned. Which isn't a huge problem but it gets annoying that you have to keep re-learning. Other Rockstar titles in general like Bully, RDR2 and such, got the melee combat perfect imo. Like have a way to change through the 3 (technically 4) different moves through the pause menu or what do you mean?

D T
An interview from July 2013 where Imran Sarwar talks about what they were going for with the melee mechanics. It's pretty interesting looking back on it. I doubt you'll ever hear a designer at Rockstar giving such an off the cuff interview like this again. It takes practice, but it's so satisfying when you time it just right and counter. I've always felt it feels kind of like a boxing game where you have to watch and anticipate what the other guy's doing without button mashing like crazy. Plus it's possible for multiple peds to gang up. I love kicking their arses with only a slither of health left and escaping barely. Niobium
i don't mind that michael, franklin and trevor fight the same. niko, johnny and luis all fight the same too, but the melee combat in IV is more satisfying. dodging a punch requires perfect timing and takes skill, and you can land badass combos like a spinning fist, knees in the stomach, kick in the nuts, etc. in GTA V, you land the exact same combo every single time. just two punches in the face, that's it i agree that IV's melee may be a bit too difficult, but it's still the best imo. in GTA V, fights last 2 seconds. all fistfights start and end like this: dodge a punch, punch the guy twice, punch, and one more punch. too easy and very dull imo. (LC cage fighters is awesome. beating the sh*t out of people while listening to LCHC? hell yeah) Edited May 7, 2020 by Niobium iiCriminnaaL

Luis seems to reuse Johnny's, though. Combos were finely diverse as well. I think all three protagonists share the same animations for them, though. They fit Niko the most, given his background, but it felt weird for Johnny and Luis (especially Johnny). Niobium

Ryo256
Call me crazy but if Online was the initial project and not the Story mode, it makes sense why animations are same for main characters because it is possible Rockstar made the story mode through the tools they made Online with, hence they made 3 online characters, gave em Michael, Franklin and Trevor model and bam! A sorta of a tutorial mode for Online mode. Hence not much work on setting unique animations for each character, just some superficial changes to set em apart and there we go! Whereas if you look at IV, it seems like the multiplayer is an offshoot of the singleplayer rather than the opposite. god speed, Algonquin Assassin, Niobium and 1 other
