No, but I did preferred playing as John Marston. I think they should've given you the option to change between them in free mode after you complete the story though. It would've been a cool reward.

I think that would take away a lot of the impact of the ending, I mean he's dead lol. I like to make a save during the West Elizabeth part (but before the hunting down Dutch mission/the ranch part so I can still change clothes), then I can play as John with all the areas and weapons etc unlocked as much as I want.

I know, but it kinda sucks to spend so long with a character and getting to know them, just to be locked out of getting to play as them for ever. I know I could just create a second save, but that seems as if that's just being extra over something that could've been a 100% completion reward.

I agree it kind of sucks but that's the give and take of it, being denied continuing to play as John is so key to the strength of the story that I don't think it would work. You get to play as his son which is kind of a novel experience in gaming, I would say that's some form of "reward" to make up for it. But also as well as making use of a second save or starting the game again you can replay missions as John. So it seems pretty fair to me.

He's just no John and it's also pretty sad to see him filling his shoes living the same lifestyle when that was the last thing John wanted so it's bittersweet to carry on playing as him.

 

In my game he's become a full time hunter since that's my favourite side activity. Just had some long hunting sessions in West Elizabeth with the master hunter outfit on then went to Mexico to sell everything and made like $20,000, so he's doing well. 

While this does not excuse it, I think it's because he feels that if his horse was faster, he would have been able to save his father. It is seated in self loathing.

I think it's more that he just has a lot of unresolved anger in him in general because of everything that happened than that specifically, but yeah it does make sense for his character. Doesn't stop it being annoying though
