Niobium
to be honest, i didn't really hate playing as him like most people did. of course i prefer his father, but i did not really find jack that annoying. i wanted to complete the game, and i did not mind losing control of john marston in order to do so. what do you guys think? Lemoyne outlaw
i think i feel the same way. i certainly think john is much better. but i dont hate him. its just a shame that you spend all the time with john and really enjoy him. then you play as a character that you dont know nearly as much about. its the same thing with arthur. we spend all that time with him. just to end up playing as someone we have already known for almost ten years. john had his time in the spotlight. we need more arthur. Algonquin Assassin
Jack's alright, but I agree with Lemoyne outlaw. I think he's introduced far too late. The story should've been about 20 missions longer and Jack's introduction should've been brought forward and/or we should've had some more missions with him. I personally didn't find him that annoying, but it was jarring spending all that time as John and then we're transferred to Jack to pretty much tie up the loose ends (Killing Ross) and that's it. He kinda comes across like a bit of a little sh*t when he's younger to be honest so maybe that's why some people don't like playing as him *shrugs*. Nappy
It’s a different experience but still cool. You may save the game at some point to keep John lol Merquis and Niobium
shadyslady
Game was pretty much over for me then. I liked the payback mission killing Ross but anything else? I did already with John so, didn't really play as him any further
Copcaller
Not really but I didn't really use him much other than getting 100 percent completion I moved to other games shortly afterwards
KGBeast
I like Jack. If you do everything with John there are just a few things left to do as Jack, so you don't spend a lot of time with him. So I did a playthrough a couple years ago where I only played the story missions as John, then spent a long time playing as Jack doing all the Strangers missions and side content as him. He has his own dialogue for basically everything. Really endeared me to him. Cutter De Blanc, gooeyhole and Jeansowaty
billiejoearmstrong8
I just wish his voice was even a little bit lower and he wasn't so disrespectful to his horse. Like I get it's to make the point that he's younger and that there's reasons why he has an angry/angsty demeanor but...it's annoying. Could've done without the dodgy facial hair too. I don't hate playing as him, he's a good character and his voice when not riding a horse isn't so bad, and it's a really interesting dynamic to go on playing as the son. He's just no John and it's also pretty sad to see him filling his shoes living the same lifestyle when that was the last thing John wanted so it's bittersweet to carry on playing as him. In my game he's become a full time hunter since that's my favourite side activity. Just had some long hunting sessions in West Elizabeth with the master hunter outfit on then went to Mexico to sell everything and made like $20,000, so he's doing well. TheOriginalGunslinger
He’s grown on me. After playing Red Dead Redemption II it felt cool playing Red Dead Redemption again. I play Jack as the “bad guy” whenever I play. The stuff John and Abigail didn’t want his life to become I made him into a stone cold killing outlaw. TheLastOutlaw1911
He was ok, it would of been nice to have more main missions with Jack. Like tracking down Edgar ross for a bit before we get to the mission where we kill him Liberty-TG

billiejoearmstrong8
I've been all about having high honour and doing legitimate activities so hadn't really explored going on killing rampages/robbing people/being dishonourable etc. I decided to get my honour down from maximum to zero (actually just takes a couple of big shootouts with the cops in Blackwater to do it). And I find that playing the bad guy is a good fit for Jack. It would feel wrong as John (although I will be trying it) but with Jack being an angry young man and all that it's cool to go around on the evil low honour horse being rude to people and doing bad deeds. Makes a nice contrast to playing John honourably and makes the ending even more tragic with Jack being everything John didn't want. billiejoearmstrong8
Omg it's so much fun playing the story as good John and then afterwards being bad Jack. He kills Ross and then makes it his mission to take revenge on every lawman in the US. He lives lawfully in Mexico with no bounty but crosses the border just to raise hell. I have him with low honour and a $10,000 US bounty and the law waiting every time he crosses the bridge lol, and he hides out and does all his business in Thieves Landing. If you just carry on playing the same as you did with John it's not very satisfying since everything's the same except Jack can never match up. So this is the best way to play him imo. My greatest crime so far is kidnapping Herbert Moon, taking him on a trip to Tall Trees and letting two bears have at him (got badly attacked and nearly killed by them myself in the process but it was worth it lol). Jeansowaty
Jack is a good protagonist. Refreshing to play as an already experienced youngster. I liked him even more than John, tbh, he was more relatable to me. Also WORK YA DAMN NAG. Niobium, HOW'S ANNIE? and XerostarTG 2
billiejoearmstrong8
Did another playthrough and I have an even better way of playing to appreciate Jack now. Playing through the story as John I ignored all the strangers missions (except I Know You since that's only for him) and challenges. I feel like this is quite fitting since he's eager to get on and get his family back. And now at the end I have some proper stuff to do as Jack, travelling around making money and learning skills by hunting etc, and helping people out. Then finally he'll meet the bureau guy in Blackwater and get the chance to kill Ross and it'll all go to sh*t and he'll become and outlaw lol. But it's cool to give him a proper story and spend time playing as him in this way. dabaannz
Two main things made me not like playing as Jack at the end: The way he yelled at his nag every time you tried to accelerate your horse (which was every time you got on your horse) took me right out of the game and made me not like him And his facial hair looked stupid. I couldn't roleplay or play as a random with that specific facial hair, I'm not sure why... it just looked so douchey. Definitely agree that not enough was done prior to the final mission to get you to connect with or like Jack... even a few simple ranch missions played as jack would've helped.. maybe doing stuff around the ranch to help out wouldv'e made a connection (not the missions you play as john with jack, hunting etc... those felt like more development for john progressing as a good father) billiejoearmstrong8
brain_bank
I didn’t hate playing as him, as i was stuck with him permanently early on. There was a glitch where if u used the cheat code as jack marston and died as him, u would skip all the story missions for some reason.
billiejoearmstrong8
Jack is such a dick lol. Every time he goes "I'm John Marston's boy!" or "I'm John Marston....Junior" etc while causing trouble I cringe hard. Both his parents must be rolling in their graves. universetwisters and Niobium 1
AIcatraz
I personally like Jack, he can be whatever the player desires, an outlaw who hates cop to a literal lawman, He isnt like john which is stuck in "Former Gang" role.
