Do you think manhunt is linked to the GTA universe?

Recommended Posts

Yes.

It's been consistently referenced to throughout the series. In the 3D era atleast Carcer City is situated in Liberty State alongside GTA III's Liberty City. The game's protagonist James Earl Cash lived in Las Venturas before the start of the game. In GTA V Michael says his first score was in Carcer City. Though with the apparent divide between the 3D and HD era it's hard to know if he means the Carcer City in Manhunt or a HD Carcer City we haven't seen yet.

From my understanding the actual events of Manhunt seem to be relatively stand alone (though this could be explained it takes place after every 3D era GTA I suppose), but Carcer City is strongly linked to the GTA series. Infact I'm surprised it hasn't appeared as a GTA city yet.

Yup. It seems to exist in both universes. Carcer City is mentioned on the news in GTA III, and Michael robbed his first bank in Carcer.

I doubt that it'd ever be a location for GTA, but it would be cool since it's a very chaotic and crime ridden city.

I think it's made explicit that Manhunt is set in the 3D Universe with Carcer City being a stand in for smaller Rust Belt cities in the Northeast like Camden, New Jersey or Hartford, Connetticut.

In the HD Universe, I think Carcer City is a much larger Midwestern Rust Belt city like Chicago or Detroit.

Yes, not sure about Manhunt 2.

Manhunt 2 doesn't have many references to the GTA 3D universe. Rockstar will probably not reference Manhunt 2 in future GTAs due to... y'know.

Manhunt 2 has a lot of billboards etc from GTA LCS but then again you could argue that it’s just them being lazy and reusing assets

Doesn’t the protagonist go to San Andreas in the end cutscene of Manhunt 2?

It's not said where Danny goes, but the manual specifically states he was born in San Fierro

On top of that, I remember one of the Red Kings in the level Red Light tends to say "Go back to San Andreas, you little prick!" when they lose sight of you.

I wonder if they knew about Danny’s past or if it’s just typical rockstar lazy writing around that era

There are links between the games that exist as Easter eggs, like the “Don’t Stop Me Mask” in GTA Online or Sprunk, though canonically it’s unimportant that they’re linked. Even things like Tarantino putting Red Apple cigarettes in his movies; it’s more a fun nod to keen-eyed viewers than anything to obsess over 😉

In fairness tho, they probably just used them because they were rushing or too lazy to make new ones. Compared to Manhunt 1 (which only has 3 vehicles from GTA) Manhunt 2 has more than 6 times that amount

But then again, they didn't need to make any new vehicles for Manhunt 2 if they're just background objects. I'm just saying that, if Manhunt 2 was being made towards the end of the "3D era" and knowing that Rockstar was working on bigger and better projects, the devs probably just didn't care that much

They also have the Stallion Car in The Warriors I believe, but that is a whole pre existing universe anyway and just a case of reusing an asset and isn't connected to GTA. But as far as Manhunt goes, it's connected. GTA 3 first mentions a corrupt police chief in Carcer City who later is mentioned again in Manhunt. I don't know the order of how things became connected, if Manhunt was going to be separate and someone remembered that joke and decided to make it part of it, or if it was always going to be a part of it in some way. Either way, it is even if loosely. But the use of cars doesn't mean much to me amongst all the other things because of the Warriors game.

I would say the involvement of Carcer City and fresh new protagonists, mixed with old, would create more interest in the Rockstar Universe. Right now, everyone is pining for GTA VI, which by all accounts, could incorporate more elements of the Manhunt series. What drives a company forward is not getting hung up on one theme. It's managed to invent new ideas well so far. I would very much like GTA VI to maintain the traddition of every game featuring new faces. Past references help keep the series together, like the one made to Niko in GTA V. We didn't see him, but he was a part of the game in spirit.

Only, the fates of Ashley Buttler and Johnny Klebitz were uncalled for and rather gratuitous.
