You don't need to qualify for MOTW, you are allowed to participate as soon as the new topic is posted. However, to vote, your account needs to be more than 4 weeks old and have 20 content count, but you are allowed to vote anyway if you participate. At the end of the calender year, all MOTW winners will automatically enter the MOTY competition and the one with the most votes will be declared winner of MOTY.

If you mean the DYOM Awards, they usually occur around December to January every year. You'll get rewards based on the categories you win. In order to be nominated you need to be an active member of the community and contribute my making missionpacks and/or participating in MOTW.

You need to obtain more than 20 content count and therefore move into the 'members' category. Right now you have lesser than 20 content and you are in the 'new members' category. Once you move into the 'members' category you will be able to change your profile picture and edit your own posts.
