GTA VI is in "early development stages"

If this is real then they had a good run, but it's all over now. Especially now that Dan Houser left. Lmao at them shunning "fratboy" culture. Yup better be a soulless company like Ubisoft. The best games were always made by "fratboys", just go check out pics of early id Software's office and they made doom.

As much as I trust Jason Schreier, I would not take the comments about the next GTA at face value. He didn't interview Rockstar directly, it's a mix of employees and ex-employees that have reached out to Jason.

Quote

(Rockstar declined to provide an interview or comment for this story.)

Hence why he didn't disclose who he talked to, since it could very well put them in trouble.

Also, about the "moderately sized GTA":

1. We have no idea what this entails, so I'm not gonna draw quick conclusions.

2. Jason specifically says that it's ONE plan, and not THE plan.

Quote

One plan that management has laid out for the next game, a new entry in the Grand Theft Auto series, is to start out with a moderately sized release [...]

So yeah we're just gonna have to wait and see what Rockstar has in store for GTA VI, but atm I'm not too worried about it.

Early development hasn't been specified though. I still reckon an announcement at the end of this year is probable with a 2021-22 release window.

"Early development" is as vague as possible. It means as much as nothing.

It makes sense. The development of RDR2 took a lot of effort from R* during 2013-2018, plus the Online mode, plus the PC release.

Rockstar is changing.

I am really curious how GTA 6 will turn out. While it will still be a great game compared to 90% of video games I am wondering if something will be lost along the way. With employees being treated better will they become more productive and GTA 6 will be even better than Red Dead Redemption 2 or will it be a step down from that impressively massive and ambitious game?

I’m excited for GTA 6 but at this point the future of GTA, single player, and online could be MANY things. It’s both an exciting and a worrying time. If GTA 6’s story will be released in “parts” that could mean single player DLC could return, which would be a dream, but also make people nostalgic for when GTA had complete storylines right out of the box. But pressure from Take Two could cause online to become a higher priority.

Although it could end up being different than what we expect, I’m sure GTA 6 will be a great game. Maybe I’ll love it, maybe I’ll be disappointed. But it’s been a fun ride speculating and if GTA 6 doesn’t live up to our dreams there’s always GTA 7, and other series.

I want to thank Rockstar for providing me with amazing entertainment. I am excited for GTA 6 and even if it’ll be disappointing the speculation alone was worth it

“It does seem like a healthier culture overall,” said a second Rockstar developer. “We’ll see in a year or two if I’m pulling my hair out, but it does seem like we’re moving in the right direction for being a company the size we are.”

this is an interesting quote. so obviously this developer is expecting crunch time to start in a year or two

Quote

so thanks to the previous article we know that crunch time can last anywhere from months to even years. even in the best case scenario i think we're at least 3 years away from the release but it can easily take even longer than that

Len Lfc was right about the release date. Most likely a next gen game released in 2023. This actually makes me glad. I know a lot of people seem to be worried by this article but I actually am glad that working conditions are (supposedly) improving at Rockstar and GTA 6 could very well be for the super powerful next-gen consoles. I’m really interested how GTA 6 will turn out now

It's funny - when you put everything in perspective, and you realize how much things really have changed... GTA Vice City only took 9 months to produce. Although, it was a much smaller game, and modern games take way longer to produce.

Personally, I kind of miss those "filler" games between major releases. GTA Vice City was a nice bridge between III and San Andreas, and Liberty City Stories and Vice City Stories were a nice bridge between San Andreas and GTA IV. We now live in an era where mobile game platforms like the PlayStation Portable/PlayStation Vita are dead, and mobile gaming doesn't really attract AAA developers, so I don't think we're ever going to see a small "filler" GTA title ever again, or mobile releases - which is a shame.

It's not fun waiting nearly a decade between releases. I always thought that The Elder Scrolls fans had it rough, now us Grand Theft Auto fans have it worse. There's so many games I'd like to see churning out of Rockstar, but because of limitations, it's simply not happening fast enough. I'd love to have seen an LA Noire sequel, two more Red Dead games after RDR1, and another GTA release within the past decade - but it's unrealistic to expect that. Staffing limitations, bandwidth, time and other obstacles of game development prevent that from happening. But it's nice to dream.

So, when should we expect an announcement/release?

If the report is accurate - and that's a huge "if", I would guess an announcement/trailer in 2021, and a release in 2023.

Sounds like you doubt its accuracy. Do you think its further along or further away than the article suggests?

Eh, it's bullsh*t. Similar sh*t has been said (not by Kotaku though) right before GTA V was announced, with Zelnick saying that "it's not even in development" like 2 weeks before the announcement etc.

I feel like it's further along than the article suggests, for sure. It would be hard for me to believe they've accomplished so little since 2013. It could be a misinterpretation of what "early development" means, it could be a PR stunt to make us all think it's not coming anytime soon (to surprise us), or the "sources" are not accurate.

I remember back in 2011, Rockstar hinted at a GTA V announcement as "we might have one or two other little things lined up. Please stay tuned...". Rockstar said something very similar this year, for what it's worth: "expect more big updates and a few surprises as we move forward into the year."

2011 (it's the very last Q&A on the bottom): https://www.rockstargames.com/newswire/article/19081/asked-answered-max-payne-3-la-noire-red-dead-and-more.html

2020: https://gamerant.com/grand-theft-auto-6-announcement-tease-gta-surprises/

I use the past to model some of my predictions.

I'm in the same boat as you then. Some however, seem to think that getting a GTA game this half of the 2020s is a pipe dream. Many of them on Twitter and such.

I would just take everything with a massive grain of salt. Don't get your hopes up, and don't believe every single article you read.

I can't tell you how many times I've seen so-called "reliable sources" flop. We have seen accurate leaks before, especially with Red Dead Redemption 2, so don't write them all off either. I wouldn't really call this Kotaku article a leak, but rather a report compiling anonymous employee experiences and opinions that can't necessarily be proven accurate.

The people that keep commenting "GTA 6?" on Rockstar's Twitter posts somewhat reminds me of the seagulls from Finding Nemo.

Instead of "mine, mine, mine" it's "GTA 6? GTA 6? GTA 6?"

Yep, its ridiculous. Even more so when it was the announcement of their actions in correspondence with what's happening in the world right now.

The next R* game is GTA 6. That's the good news. The bad news: it's still in early development stages.

So 2023 as the release date doesn't seem so unrealistic now. And it is very likely that the game is being planned for next generation.

But what about the "patches" thing? He said something about releasing an unfinished version of GTA 6 that would be expanded through later patches.

Bruh they did this “early development” bs with rdr2 and gta 5 then a month later they said this they announced it , it’s to stop us talking about it and when they announce it , it will shock the internet trust

Am I the only one that sees this as a good thing? The fact that its early in development gives them more time to get used to next gen power and milk it for all its worth.

I'm not gonna doubt Jason, I'm sure he has contacts, knows some people from the industry which includes Rockstar, he's the type of guy who vouch for improving the health and conditions of developers, always taking the developer side before the publisher, it makes sense that he would be in contact with multiple sources, but even if we take all of the info he shared into account, it doesn't turn him into a god figure who can't commit mistakes.

Him saying the next title is still in early stages of development is most likely a mistake, I'm positive it already passed early stages of development, there's no way it's still stuck on that stage. It's 60% to 70% done from what I have heard.

Hm. Could this possibly mean an announcement is possible by fall of this year or is my gullibility shining?

This is a good thing or actually this just confirms our predictions that GTA 6 will be released around 2023. What's worrying is the part about it being a moderate sized release

BTW The Know also reported that GTA 6 was in the early stages of development and that was in 2018. To me it looks like early stage in this case means something like half way done

I highly doubt it's only in the early stages of development (say 25-30% done).

If it took them only 8 months to start working on RDR II after RDR's release, a smaller, less known and less profitable game than GTA IV at the time, then it would be idiotic to not start working on GTA VI immediately in October 2013. Even if it's just them weighting their options and laying the foundations for the next opus.

Especially when you've got a weapon like GTA Online in your arsenal. Developers like Naughty Dog for example don't have the luxury of having a 7 year old multiplayer raking in billions while they work on Uncharted and The Last Of Us sequels. GTA Online allows you to take your time and properly develop games while ensuring your fans don't starve for more content. Even if they moved at a slow pace, I still think GTA VI must be at the very least 50% done at this point.

While GTA Online is profitable, it's old as f*ck and it's basically outlasted the current generation of consoles, I can't see it being kept alive (being updated) for another 4-5 years. It would basically be on life support by that time.

That and the slow death of Red Dead Online makes me think GTA VI is not THAT far ahead.

HOW'S ANNIE?

I think a lot of people are taking the "early" in early development waayyy too literally. By all intents and purposes GTA V was still in early development when they showcased it in 2011.

Don't worry about development time cycles or what percentage they are about. WORRY about these " moderate sized" titles they plan on releasing. What does this mean? its subjective of course, but why half  it on a title where you could take the time and have it complete to a degree where you dont have to add anything to it apart from its online portion. Im worried about the quality of SP. I read those words and i literally put my head down. Then why take all that extensive time if its only going to be a "moderate" title.  I feel they only want to add a single player experience that is limited and then you are forced to play its online portion because its a dynamic mechanic that anything can be added to. R* just break away please...
