Valuables in Satchel — “Use”

Recommended Posts

Adrenalist

Okay, so this has me curious.

I was perusing my Valuables in my Satchel and noticed something weird: A few of the items, when highlighted, bring up a “USE” function that is grayed out (on the bottom right of your screen).

That tells me that I am not standing in the proper location for them to be “used”.

The three items that I currently have in my satchel that bring up said function are:

Meteorites

Large Jewely Bags

Small Jewelry Bags

It is not limited to just these items, it’s just what I currently have in my inventory at the time I noticed it. But to note, none of my orchids, random jewelry (to sell or sell/craft), gold bars, gold nuggets, or female statue have this “USE” ability.

Is anyone aware of this, or does anyone have any idea where these items may be used?

The jewelry bags and random jewelry can be sold to a fence or donated to camp. Hang on to the orchids, you will use them further on in the game.

Hey Taterman, I appreciate the attempt to help!

Unfortunately, it’s not much help though, as it’s the greyed out “USE” function I’m questioning. If you go into your satchel and you have any of the items I’m referring to (meteorites, large/small jewelry bag) and highlight them to get a description, you’ll see a “USE” function that is greyed out.

My question is has anyone seen a point in the game where the “USE” function is enabled?

————————————————

I did some research last night and fell into the rabbit hole subreddit reddeadmysteries. And I think a lot of people can’t see the forest through the trees on the meteorites. I’m going to address the triple meteorite allowable storage, and then focus back on my original “USE” question.

Here are the meteorite facts:

1) Beta allowed you to hold 100 meteorites.
2) Released game allows you to hold 3 meteorites.
3) Each meteorite equipped in your satchel (according to the game guide) gives you 10% hot weather protection.

It’s pretty obvious to me that R* realized that they needed to limit the benefits of sun protection to 30% before release.

And almost everything respawns in the game. Almost everything. This includes jewelry bags, money clips, and I’m guessing meteorites, too. It just takes a LOT of game time before they do. If I had to guess, it is about 90 in game days before they respawn. Examples of items that I’ve found that do not respawn are unique weapons and unique hats/masks usually found together at a site. Mostly everything else does. Therefore, given enough time, a third meteorite, fourth meteorite, etc, will respawn at the outdoor site in the crater. And R* simply wanted the allowable sun protection limited to 30%.

OK, that’s my take on the meteorite storage that a ton of people are conspiracy theorizing.

Let’s move on to the original post of “USE”.

————————————————

Because the meteorite has a “USE” function, is the 10% hot weather protection the “USE”?

What about the jewelry bags? Then how is the person in possession “using” them? Do they have a unique property?

After doing some more research, there are other items as well that have a greyed out “USE” function, including the Emerald. How is that used?

Anyway, this just takes it back to the original question: Has anyone found a way to “USE” these items?

And the new addendum: Is it just noting a property that the possession is allowing the holder to “USE”?

Just a couple of additions:

Here is a pic from the strategy guide confirming the meteorite’s special characteristics:

And here is also something of possible interest about Valuables:

Note that “Valuables are precious items whose primary purpose is to be sold, though a few of them are required[...]during chance encounters.”

Wow, is this something we can see in the game or just a mocked up picture for the guide?

Still have yet to see hail, or lightening strike camp (or me) and now add this to that list.

I've had lightning strike very close to Arthur. Scared the crap out of me. The ground was charred where it hit.

That’s a pic of what’s said in the official guide. Note that in the foreword to the guide it states “We (R*) worked closely with the very talented team at Piggyback (the publisher) to design this guide...” Therefore, it’s R* itself stating the meteorite’s special characteristics.

Very interesting. Would that be considered a “chance encounter”? Makes me wonder...

It's not the description that interests me. it's that picture of the meteor in the sky. I have never seen that or a shooting star in game and Im wondering if anyone has?

BTW there were supposed to be three meteorites, one was removed. Or we can't find it, not sure. The BETA thread has all that information. But I've never seen a meteor in the sky and it would make for good pictures.

For your original question, I have no clue how a "use" button would work on say a bag of jewellery, but yes I too notice it is greyed out for a few items that get the head scratching...

Wow. Thanks for seeing that. I’m making it a point to not read anything in the guide as I don’t want to spoil anything (I’ve had it since the game’s release) but needed to verify what was being said online about the meteorite, so I cracked it open. So just now I read the second entry just below the meteorite info.

This is what it says: “If you happen to be close to the meteor house in the dead of night (2am seems fairly optimal), head to the field directly west of the house and look up — you might get to see a meteor shower in the sky.”

Maybe my theory that a third meteorite respawns is off. Maybe you’re supposed to chase a meteor.....

And thanks for telling me about the meteor shower, I never thought to go there at that time of night, or look up lol.
