GTA 6 Speculation & Discussion [Part 4]

Bashing YouTubers and making the topic about it (or any other kind of antagonism) will net you a warning for derailing the topic.

Please use some common sense too while discussing subjects, don't delve too deep into speculating about people's personal lives (e.g. Houser departure from R*, Rockstar developers, etc.) as they deserve privacy and not a raging fan forum to make up things about them. Needless to say, any hate will be quickly nipped in the bud.

Of course we can never forget its a HUGE team nowdays and the more we talk about these individuals the more we forget about everybody else responsible for our favourite games.

This. I mean, it's easier for the human mind to fixate on specific people, but still, making a video game is the work of a huge team, not a select few.

Absolutely in terms of tone. RDR 2 was able to balance humor and melancholy in a very special way throughout the story, while also not f*cking up the story's pacing. Depending on the location, GTA 6's tone should be a mix of 5's and 4's.

Yeh, RDR II is deadly serious and a lot closer in tone to GTA IV. The location will certainly be important. I'm not really worried about that too much tho'. I'm more worried that the style of satire the games are famous for could be affected by recent departures. But it's not just a few writers leaving that is a problem, it's also the current climate.

This has been posted numerous times, but I'll copypasta it again. From Dan Houser in 2018, before RDR II's launch.

"It’s really unclear what we would even do with it, let alone how upset people would get with whatever we did. Both intense liberal progression and intense conservatism are both very militant, and very angry. It is scary but it’s also strange, and yet both of them seem occasionally to veer towards the absurd. It’s hard to satirise for those reasons. Some of the stuff you see is straightforwardly beyond satire. It would be out of date within two minutes, everything is changing so fast."

Some took this as a hint that VI could be a period piece, but I think Dan Houser didn't let on just how much the current political climate may have affected his own creativity. Maybe guys like Dan and Lazlow just don't feel confident their writing style suits 2020 and they've moved on.

I often wonder if a game like San Andreas could even be written and produced today without pissing so many people off it would be suffocating for the talent.

You can't please everyone. I'm pissed off my coke house in GTA ONLINE has NPCs clothed. How could I trust them?!

Majority of people play GTAV for it's many levels of production from it's aesthetics to the gameplay responsiveness. To idolize the overall storyline is great but how many besides us finished GTA IV and V story.

RDR Online + GTA Online is a perfect example of what's going on internally at Rockstar. The online components are based on choosing the narrative you want, while NPCs storyline develops on its own.

Why should they continue to invest millions into that sector?

Spoiler

Kill the Hatians? Hot Coffee? Waterboarding Mini game?

Long are the days of GTA being solely about the single player storyline. Even in GTA IV you could just go straight online and your whole experience is based on that. The location time and place versus whether or not you worry about offended your fans. Given their biggest fans are Sony and Microsoft. What we get in the end is of course filtered, but to us we're kids in a candy store.

Also what's going on now in America has been going on since the late 70s. It's literally Regan MAGA, Women Rights, New Right, Black Rights, etc Rights.

Literally the best selling game at the time was PAC MAN which influenced Race N Chase with influenced GTA.

Well Dan handed in notice in spring last year, and Lazlow seems to have been leading up to this moment for a while. So it's not that weird, and it hardly half way through, either. Again, presuming 5 year cycles, then they have left pretty early.

GTA was turned into a mediocre comedy. R* seriously needs to bring more seriousness, low-end crime and drama. There's a possibility that new faces in R* are going to bring something what GTA has been missing in their next title.

No i really loved the comedy in 5. Idon't know why everyone want fifty shades of grey game or some bshiiiiii.

Nah for real. I would love it to be more serious. But some people in here litterally talk about it should be a sad depressed game. Like wtf? How about no.

I mean, I get what you're saying. But your comparisons are just completely off the chart.

Not sure people were hoping GTA VI would be like a BDSM Mona Lisa...

I just mean it shouldn't be THAT serious. Gta v was the best fresh of air for me after gta 4 rainy and "sad" story. Im just saying that it is game and don't want it to be too serious.

I want a serious gritty crime story. This right here looks like its straight out of a GTA mission.

"Steal that bitch, see what comes."

I want to be a criminal in GTA. Not a Yoga instructor, not a government employee, a criminal.

I want to be a petty crook stealing cars and doing small drug deals in Liberty City then working my way upto the top in Vice City to be the new Druglord with my own Domestobot.

Also I won’t die at the end, just be a decade or so older.

What do you guys think Dan was doing from 2018-2020. Also, it’s weird how he left before gta 6 comes out. You would of thought he would of ended his career with the success of gta 6

Maybe Hot Coffee was Lazlow ideal but he did add great humor to the radio stations in a perverted way.

RDRII feels like a opus magnum of "old Rockstar" and I expect the same when it comes to next GTA, opus magnum of old crew, especially when we see it slowly falling apart.

I highly agree. I loved GTA V when it came out, but I kinda lied to myself for a while when I played it, then realized it doesn't hold up. RDR II is just a great way to cap a great reputation, and I see that it could very well be the end of the "old Rockstar" as we know it. I'm always one who wants to wait and see, but I've always been the waiting type. People's thoughts are usually quicker than mine, so when I realize how everyone hates or loves something right out of the gate, I usually am the out-of-place guy for a while.

I'm pretty sure he officially left in March of this year but was on a year long sabbatical since March of 2019. So I doubt he's done very much lately lol.

I think we may have to accept that, if GTA 6 really is not coming until 2023 at the earliest, that Dan (and Lazlow) may not have contributed all that much to the project.

Of course maybe Rockstar are working on a an older script, written by Dan. But I doubt Lazlow has had much to do with GTA 6's writing and production.

Also Dan had co writers just as responsible as he was for the narrative. They are still there.

I'm not disagreeing with you, but not everybody listens to the talk radio stations, or even cares. I loved VCPR, but most others I never much cared for. While I, as a hardcore GTA fan may agree with you, I don't think the majority would notice or care.

It's cyclical. It happens almost all the time. in 2008, GTA IV was garbage and San Andreas was the best GTA. Now GTA IV is regarded as the pinnacle of the series. in 10 years time, GTA V will likely be considered the best, the reasons will always change. Maybe it will be because it was the last GTA made by the og team. Who knows. Halo had it with Reach. When it launched it was considered disappointing by many. Mostly due to the maps all being from campaign or forge. And removal of the BR and added bloom. Now it's considered a beloved classic.

Hard to analyse the love/hate cycle with this stuff, because alot of people loved gta 5 when it came out, trevor was always a fan favorite,i kinda think the gta 5 story criticism is contained on internet forums, the mainstream loved the game.

Same goes for online, internet complains, majority buys it like a drug.

ROCKSTAR MANIC

So I started to watch Miami Vice again, just finished Brothers Keeper the first Pilot episode of the show. Wow Just from what I remember the first time I watched till right now that I watched it again. The writing is just so great, keeps you hooked and theres balanced of action and drama. I really hope the outdue themselves, I havent finished RDR2 but I really hope its better than that story.  I hope our protag loves the trill of what the story provides and that whoever it is, they actually look forward of doing what is necessary to survive and reach whatever they are looking for to be successful even if it means doing what they have to do to get there. Cant wait to see that screen on the main website later down this year. Hopefully.

It was Sam Houser who wanted to push the boundaries ;)

Quote

On 14th July 2004 Sam Houser, the president and co-founder of Rockstar Games, wrote an email to Jennifer Kolbe, the company's operations director. At most other firms, its contents would have been considered 'NSFW'.

“These are some examples of content that will be displayed graphically:

[Oral sex]

Full sex (multiple positions)

Dildo sex (including being able to kills [sic] someone with a dildo)

Whipping (being whipped)

Masturbation (one of the characters is compulsive; this MUST be kept)

“All of these items are displayed through cut-scenes [a "cut-scene" is a cinematic sequence during which game play stops] and in-game.”

He continued: “In [GTA: San Andreas] we are keen to include new functionality and interaction in line with the 'vibe' of the game. To this end, in addition to the violence and bad language, we want to include sexual content, which I understand is questionable to certain people, but pretty natural (more than violence), when you think about it and consider the fact that the game is intended for adults.”

I think they are following Rockstar since they first opened the Twitter handle, not recently at all.
