probably yes, but then delay the release date as always, because they dont learn from their faults

Depends. If they announce it this year then it's possible that they will be silent for around 1 year like they did with V. If they announce it next year (i believe this plan will be more beneficial) they will have an release date and a smaller gap maybe even 6-8 months. 

 

Those are opinions though the facts are :

 

1. They  almost always announce games 2 years before release.

2. They will surprise us.

I'm thinking late 2021 early 2022.......as a cross gen release.

 

Late 2021 is the sweet spot between still having allot of people with current gen hardware and having a decent amount of people adopting to PS5/XBSX.

 

I still can't see Rockstar leaving a combined install base of 150 million+ on the table when the potential timing of release could set them up to have another GTAV scenario. A game that has sold crazy numbers over two generations instead of just one.

 

This time however I feel they will put allot of effort into making the Next gen version as future proof as possible. 

 

Maybe the reports of GTAVI having a modest start could relate to the current gen versions. It could be similar to how GTAO updates evolved into something waay bigger after they stopped updating the PS3/360  versions of the game.

 

GTAVI 2021(PS4+PS5): Slightly smaller than GTAV but still a big game.

 

GTAVI 2031(PS5): A monstrous sized game. A game that essentially becomes the next gen version of the 3d era with new cities added throughout the years, all with their own shorter self contained stories.

 

Multiple smaller GTA games.. combined into one like Voltron.

If it releases in 2021 I doubt it'll be cross-gen. Last gen sales plummet when new consoles come out and while things are a bit different now versus the last generation swap, I doubt that'll change all that much.

 

That PS4/XB1 install base looks amazing on paper but once we're a year or two into the new generation it's really not. Just because many will still own their PS4/XB1's doesn't mean they want to buy games on them.

Im sorry, but no cross gen. this is only limiting what they can do with this title. If you can't afford the next console, I'm sorry but you're gonna start to save money. Current gen is old tech from the late 2000s. Having another run into it with a GTA title is bad in the terms of what they can improve. Current gen will only hold back what they can do with the next GTA. Of course it will be great for sales, for current but even after a while like Jason said, there will be an issue of what they can create. I feel like people resent the title if its a cross gen cause XB1/PS4 will hold it back.

Ah but you're assuming everyone will be in the position to run out and buy new £400+ hardware within the first year. Not realistic especially with how 2020 is going.

 

Last gen sales will slow down sure, but that's still a large chunk of people/sales to leave behind. There's many reasons why people may stick with their old hardware for a few more years and when you have a franchise that has become an essential buy for any console it lands on, best believe they've taken that into account.

 

Unless the game comes out in 2024 I see cross gen as a very big possiblity.

Current gen would be a bad decision progress-wise. Money wise it might make sense but let's hope they won't do that.

 

And of course it's also important, that there won't be something like the rumored XBox Series S which would limit all next gen titles since they also would have to be playable on low-end-next-gen..

No, I'm not assuming that. Install base for new consoles doesn't happen over night, it ramps up over years which is one of the many reasons the biggest projects start releasing a few years in. 

 

However, many people who own the old consoles simply stop buying games until they can afford the new consoles. There's gonna be more cross-gen overlap then there ever has been this generation due to backwards and forwards compatibility and the crossover with all the "games as a service" style games, MS releasing cross-gen for a year or so too, etc, but typically game sales on the old hardware start to tank when a new console comes out.

 

I'm not saying GTA VI releasing on PS4/XB1 releasing in 2021 won't sell at all but to suggest that their target install base is the XB1 + PS4 + XSX + PS5 install base is... not going to happen. The overall console install base will shrink massively over the next two years or so.

Regardless, someone pointed out that next GTA could be in fact crossgen which made me think. What if the next GTA will be some sort of spin off before we go back to GTA VI? I've read way too many '' leaks '' and I doubt any of them are true, but who knows.

Exactly bigger projects launch later so why would GTA be the exception?

 

We're stuck between two sh*t possibilities but those are the only two I see. Release earlier and be cross gen?..Or release waay later when the next gen numbers are acceptable.

 

Why wouldn't an initial target base of 4 console not sound realistic? 4 consoles make more money than 2. That's the bottom line lol 

 

Like I said I'm sure they'd do their best to future proof the next gen versions if cross gen does happen. I'm sure they didn't know back in 2013 that GTAV would have the legs it did but this time I'm certain they know they have to make game that will last 10 years, cross gen or not.
