Minimal minimap prototype

Gold: Main way point. Purple: Player-made way point White: Protagonist's interest (E.g. Restaurant if hungry but largely a random point of interest)

Individual way points fade in or out depending on the proximity of destination. Encourages players to actually make their own routes and learn the city, instead of being glued to the minimap.

This is just great. RDR2 should've definitely had something like this. With modern day graphics and draw distance, it makes much more sense to navigate and find the targets by looking at the actual screen, since details in the distance are not just pixelated mess anymore and all the distant objects are usually fully loaded. Advanced 3D audio could also be used to track the target by sound, instead of seeing it as a red dot on your minimap. Thinking about the GTA:O, this type of minimap would be much better there too, you would see that there's an other player near you and then you could either try to find him/her or "hide" yourself in plain sight by driving an NPC looking car

Of course the navigator would still exist and it would work thru your in-game phone or be a standard in modern cars, but it would not really work as a radar.

Thanks man. Yeah it would have worked really well with RDR2 with the bigger emphasises exploration compared to GTA. I remember hearing rumours that they would fully account for the player turning the HUD off with NPC's telling you to "turn left" here or "turn right" there. While it's understandable why, it's still a shame that rumour didn't end up true.

I feel the current system that originated in GTAIV is both a gift and curse. On one hand it eliminates any frustration with finding where you need to go especially when dealing with bridges. On the other it eliminates the feeling of actually getting to know the map with your own two eyes. It didn't bother me until I finally really thought about how much time I dedicate to that bottom left side of the screen.

Letting the player use their senses to locate things definitely sounds like it would be cool. Good call on the advanced 3d audio Sony was going on about in that presentation. Would definitely make the gunfights feel a hell of allot more tense if they executed it right.

You don't know how glad I am that you mentioned being able to hide in plain sight. I made a GTAO2 concept largely focused on just that lol 👍.

Rectangular, covers more terrain.

But personally what I really want is a icons-only radar with the background that is actually transparent.

On V last gen we had that, said radar didn't had the health bars.

On V current gen we got the healthbars...But the area of the map we the icons are is not 100% transparent.

Oh, also a option to turn off blips like what we got for Online, but should also be extended to property blips.

I am a fan of "if it isn't broken don't fix it" so I don't see the need to change. If we are gonna have special abilities then we will need rectangular. The same we had in V. If not we can return to a circular one. But honestly I am fine with either.

Rectangular is far more superior ,  most people that want circular are blinded by nostalgia.

No HUD. RDR2 is more than playable without radar if you listen to dialogues closely and explore except in some story missions. Maybe a floating notification on screen to show the current objective by pressing a button on controller would work.

If you listen to dialogue closely in RDR2 you can play the whole game easily without radar expect some missions.

For example - After you break Micah out of Jail in Strawberry he says that he's not gonna go back to camp and stay near Strawberry like a hermit until he gets something valuable for Dutch. If you explore near Strawberry using campfire smoke as visual cues you'll find Micah near Monto's Rest.

Similarly Dutch says John is waiting for you near Caliga Hall for some job. Explore and you'll find John easily. Also the pressing lower D pad to bring up radar for a few seconds is a brilliant choice that alleviates most problems.

I really don't see what preferences in the shape of the radar/minimap has anything to do with "nostalgia". Does that mean everyone who wants a rectangular shaped one is a millennial and doesn't like proven tech that man has been using since humans could first navigate the planet? Have a look at the shape of your average compass.

Anyway I was thinking if GTA VI does make it possible where you don't always need a radar/minimap present and assuming it's modern day then I hope the GPS voices come back. I always found that stupid in GTA V where it's something GTA IV had (among other things GTA IV has) that despite being older the sat navs felt more realistic how in some of the newer cars they'd come with the voice telling you the direction to go or you can toggle in the options for every car to have one. Where was this in GTA V even though it's set 5 years AFTER? Who the f*ck knows.:/

Ideally if it's set in the past another way is using vehicle indicators on the player car as a visual cue sort of like The Getaway games and in the upcoming Ghost Of Tsushima it doesn't even have a HUD of any kind, but it has  the protagonist's cape and "wind" blowing it in a certain direction to where the objective is.

Those GPS voices were kinda annoying

Rectangular for me, I think. Although I'm not opposed to circular.

Well turn them off in the options menu. Problem solved.

It still doesn't change my point that it's stupid how in GTA V it's 5 years newer yet fails to have a function that basically every modern sat nav features yet its predecessor was able to do.

Ironically, those GPS voices are like music to my ears 😂. Let alone the immersion they add to the game, they are really nostalgic.

I went with rectangular because it covers more area, it's like a little GPS screen.

Rectangular is fine with me. I'm more used to GTA V's radar/minimap now. It's nice and looks nifty as well. I also wouldn't mind the option to switch between the square and rectangular ones. It would be a nice addition to allow more user customization.

I like it Circular for the Retrospective  vibes from GTA 3 to 4.

But it should always be different depending on the vehicle you are in.

Or vehicles should be retangle sideways like a gps screen and on-foot it should be retangle upwards like a iphone screen.

I'm choosing none, the game should allow you to choose between circular, rectangular, or Triangular in the options menu.

Circle with a simple top down view, unlike how V has it a bit "skewed" towards the direction you're facing. It's always worked in the past R* games, I honestly don't know why V changed it. Maybe both options if R* can be bothered, no such thing as too many HUD options, like being able to turn off the map but retain blips, It's a must to be able to get lost in the map on the only first play-through you'll ever have.

I'd vote for rectangular, since circular minimaps take up about the same amount of screen space, but are able to represent less information imo
