How do you compare RDR2 to GTAV?

Recommended Posts

Patrizio

Hi all,

Sorry if this has been discussed before. If so, feel free to lock, but I searched and surprisingly I couldn't find a similar topic.

So I'll ask - how you compare RDR2 to GTAV? Which game you prefer? Why? Which has better characters? Did RDR2 have the right choice in terms of a single protagonist? Which had a better wanted system?

I'm really curious what people think now the dust has settled on Rockstar's two latest entries.

its hard to really compare them. since they are both set in different eras. but i like them both equally for their own unique reasons. like i love red deads story. i love the gang aspect. and it was very well done. i also really love the map. lemoyne has to be one of my favorite locations in any video game. although when it comes to transportation gta 5 dominates. it has a lot more vehicles and much faster ones. and plus i personally like cars better than horses. its so nice to fly around in a plane or zoom through traffic in a sports car. or even riding the waves on a speedboat. its so much better. although i will say i like how red dead 2 did add boats. since the first one did not have them. in terms of combat. i like the hand to hand and melee combat better in red dead. but for shooting i hate having to clean guns or shoot slow. its nice to get to use the maxim gun because its full auto. i also thiink both multiplayer games are about equal. not as good as the singleplayer. but this is just my personal opinion. both games are great.

Much better. GTA V felt a step back for Rock star games.

GTA V feels like it’s more appealing to a younger audience where as Red Dead is more geared towards adults who want a story driven game.

My main issue is antagonists in GTA are almost pointless. Neither Steve, Stretch, Devin or the other guy were built up enough to warrant being the final villains.

These are clearly two different games. With that in mind, RDR2 has:

- better graphics for its time: when gta v was released for ps3 2013 the graphics felt outdated. When rdr2 was released for console 2018 the graphics surpassed (more or less) all other games.

- more living, breathing world

- better physics (gta v implementation of euphoria was downgraded compared to gta IV)

- better ai. No more ''im calling the cops'' just because you stand close to someone. No more cops or peds killing you for no real reason. Many details, such as medics actually transporting injured people was removed in gta v.  GTA V AI was a downgrade compared to GTA IV.

- rdr2 soundtrack is superior compared to gta v. Only the 3rd trailer alone has a great sound.

- much better shooting mechanics. Shooting in gta v felt way to arcadish, like the ''responsive'' driving mechanics and ''streamlined'' vehicle physics. All the stuff you find in all other games. Euphoria was so downgraded in gta v that you could kill someone by bumping into them or punch them one time.

- more realistic weapons, better variation, customization.

- more complex characaters and storyline

- extreme amounts of details that surpass v

- more more complex wanted system

- better shooting mechanics

- more content in singleplay (mysteries, robberies, hunting, bounties, loads of missions outside of storyline etc.)

- much more mature. GTA V - even for a gta game - felt a bit childish.

And last: online is not as big in rdr2 as in gta v. Anyone who values the singleplayer experience will know why this is a good thing. Online is generally toxic and in competition with singleplayer, and therefore, the more profit R* makes in online, the more sh*t on SP.

Truth to be told, GTA V was the only GTA game which I was dissapointed with. When it was released for PS3 even the graphics was outdated for its time.

There might be more. But that is my five cents.

Thanks for the replies 👍.

So I've just reached the start of the Epilogue. All I can say is... wow. The story, protagonist(s) and antagonists of RDR2 are so, so much better than GTAV. I'm glad to see Rockstar can still write a great story again. When:

you know what happens to you know who, I felt emotional. Well done Rockstar. The game is a masterpiece - like a movie.

Yep, unfortunately, most people don't like the game for just that reason: it is to long, to slow, to complex. Like the rest of the game. Just read Metacritics. People expect all games fast-paced, easy, and and simple, like CoD. It's the unfortunate truth. Games like RDR2 makes you start thinking and that is precisely what most gamers dislike. Sad but true.

It's not even close... RDR2 blows GTAV away in every way, as it should - gtav was a "last gen" game.
