[MP] Carver For Hire (Notna/RithRake24)

This mission pack is a collaboration between @Notna and @RithRake24. How it simply works is, we take turns making missions - neither of us know where the other is going to take the story, if anywhere. We upload intermittently, so keep checking back regularly for more missions! The missions are also presented in very traditional GTA style - our hero starts making his way through the ranks from the very ground up. Where does he end up? Go find out!

TrpaNqL.png

Bryan Carver, a former United States Army squad leader, returns to Los Santos and starts using his specialized, into-shape molded talents for personal gain. Run-ins with the criminal underworld and the law are guaranteed as Carver makes his way to the top.

This very much brings back the memories of multi-designer's projects from back in the day, this being on a smaller scale, like a ''dynamic duo'' kind of thing, similar to what @leoncj and @Doublepulse did with their Cold Year mission pack from way back. I like it. I will be checking this out. Not sure when, but I will be checking it out!

" Bryan Carver enjoy rollin' around with that White Fool! "

Played all 4 missions, and currently now, I only can say that something big is coming up!

That Dazz guy, looks me quite strange xD. Apart from, story looks promising, pretty much like classical Old fashioned L.S Gangs Habit of Drug Trafficking & Arm Smuggling.

Looking ahead for upcoming missions. Good Luck! :^:;)

Hey man, thanks a lot for the feedback. We wanted to create something with a nostalgic feel and I'm glad it's showing through.

This allows us to work closer together for this missionpack. So that we both can have the fun of not knowing where the story goes, while being able to chat regularly with each other and help improve each others' finished missions to avoid inconsistencies. It's a very fun experience and I'm extremely glad Notna thought this up and decided to get me onto it.

Very nice. Keeping this about the idea instead of the mission pack for now, it's cool that people take the initiative to do collaboration projects. Good luck.

played the four missions. surprised i got more symbolism than usual though;

first off the start - i liked the character introduction, and the similarities with the GTA San Andreas storyline - examples include: the debtor running away from Nathaniel's money, just like Freddy did with Loc's rhymes; same goes for that "Rap G" guy, a fake-ass rapper! just like OG Loc! well, we've got to kill him early.

anyways, on the missions. we get introduced to the two main characters, with the protagonist - Bryan Carver. this name actually holds symbolism here, as Bryan name means "high, noble" as he was an US Army squad leader; a great achievement. Carver sounds like a person who drives hard material professionally, and let's say Carver's doing the same thing. guns are the relevant option for his surname.

liked the mission "White Snow" where you gotta do the deal, but in theory, could have Brandon sent those guys to take out the two "heroes" here? is he doing the betrayal, but got away with the COVID-19?

second, as checking out Dazz's dialogue - he's just like Big Smoke and partly Ryder. as for his name, i couldn't really find such information but his name as from character appearance, is possibly an "killer" since Disco Jazz  is actually a real thing and it's shortened name is "Dazz", which could possibly tell Dazz liked to kill people. good job there, Notna.

as for Nathaniel, it comes from Greek form of Hebrew; meaning "God has given" well, Nathaniel does give weapons at the fourth mission; so possibly, he's the character responsible for this kind of stuff? i'd like to ask the authors to let me know.

the dialogue, was pretty good actually. Notna's the high point here, as there's the racist term "white fool" which Dazz calls Nathaniel. man, as for Carver just doing for money - why's he doing it just for money? so he can become a rich criminal in Los Santos' criminal underworld? to establish power over someone? this gives me the question, since the symbolism here was matched and partially connected.

as for this, a perfect-gangster style mission which includes more symbolism than usual. GTA San Andreas had done it plenty of times too as well.

good luck for future missions, this has captured my interest. hopefully we get introduced to more characters soon!

You’ll see what’s to come in the upcoming missions :D

He’s doing it for money because... he’s doing it for money. To make ends meet. This is the only way of making money that he is good at. Whether he will become a criminal underworld kingpin or not is completed undecided at this point but it could be a possible direction for the story to go in. After all a craving for money does usually lead to consequences of various natures.

LordStarship

Amazing time I got from this MP for sure!

Spoiler

4 missions packed up very well. There are so many possibillities that could be built with only those 4, which is quite awesome!

We're introduced to Bryan Carver, former US Army, and also a former Balla. His personality is cold, but with Nat, he sounds like he's a good guy. He does everything if it gives him money, it reminds me of a movie with the exact same protagonist as well, I forgot the name though. Seems to be really experienced with gun, as expected from a former army, and a real gangster type of guy.

Then we're introduced to Dazz, (maybe) a Ballas OG, and from the 'hood area, seems it comes from Front Yard Ballas, which is always getting some trouble with other gangs plenty of times, as also introduced in the first mission. He is a real gangsta, and his dialogue and all quite reminds me of Smoke lol.

Another character named Nathaniel Hodge or Nat joined the game. Owns the Ammu-Nation, and perhaps a good and kind guy. Seems like he was helped by Bryan in the past, so I just speculated that Nat could be one of the army lol.

All the characters done, let's jump into the review!

I just wanna say, Notna makes a great gangster-type dialogue! He really shows Dazz's personality as a true gangsta clear from the dialogues we see. Rith also makes great dialogues, which makes another personality for Bryan that's not cold as f*ck! Some of them also cackles me up as well!

The cutscene is good! There are one or two parts that some cutscenes getting me annoyed 'cause teleport objectives but it's okay. As expected from Rith who is into photography, the angles of the camera is placed really well!

The plot itself is great! Really feels like GTA at some points! Character developments and all are handled well, and it seems like we're progressing the story with the rewards we get from previous mission, which is what I really like!

This mission pack itself is the perfect definition of a "simple spell but quite unbreakable". With it's simplicity, it brings a real fun and enjoyable missions! I hope the best for you two to complete the Mission Pack!

Played the four missions and I gotta say it was fun.

Carver for Hire is a perfect blend of old and new, designed by Notna, who represents DYOM in its prime and RithRake who is undoubtedly the future of DYOM.

The two designers managed to to stay consistent in their style which made the missions immersive. No major inconsistenties in dialogue or design style such as in the larger multi-designer projects.

This story takes place in a familiar Los Santos where the Ballas and the Groves are still at each other's necks but with modern references like Covid-19. While the story feels like it doesn't know where to go, the current four missions have featured interesting characters like protagonist Carver and friends such as Dazz and Nat. Although I have to say I am not a fan of Carver. Being cold and monotone with no real motivation than money had me thinking he could have better been a silent protagonist so I wouldn't have to read his constant annoyed or sarcastic replies. I really loved Dazz though as he brought some much needed humor to an overal bland story.

In terms of gameplay, Carver for Hire is superb. Both Notna and RithRake have perfectly replicated the early game style missions of the 3D Era GTA games. Running through an alley while being shot by the LSPD or trying to stop a Vago from racing away in your van were really enjoyable experiences.

I am excited to see what these two very talented designers will take Carver next. Personally I would like to see him loosen up a bit. Perhaps gradually as we learn more about his backstory through Nat and as he hangs out more with Dazz. I look forward to playing whatever comes next. Good luck, designers!

@Target13

Thanks so much for taking your time to play through the four missions! As for Carver, there is plenty of room still to explore his character. As for his interaction with Dazz, he is monotonous and acts uninterested and keeps mentioning money as his motivation because he wants to make it really clear to Dazz that he is not interested in being a Balla like he used to be, rather being that guy who does odd jobs for money. You can see how Dazz repeatedly tries to get him to be one of their ‘homies’ but Carver isn’t interested in being loyal to a street gang anymore. He just needs money on a constant basis to make ends meet.

He does have a softer side which he doesn’t use with Dazz. I tried to imply this by making him softer with Nat, who’s an old buddy rather than someone whom he simply depends on to get work from and get paid. He also has family that hasn’t been introduced yet whom he would be more empathetic with.

I’m incredibly glad that you enjoyed the gameplay and presentation which after all is what this mainly is about. Looking forward to hearing more from you!

Played through the first 4 missions.

This is pretty good so far. Really like how both of you improved your scriptwriting for this project, characters feel natural and the flow of their conversations creates the necessary atmosphere. Gameplay-wise everything is pretty basic so far, but I do like simplicity.

I do wonder where the plot will take Carver and how will his journey eventually end because so far it seems that there's no set path for the story and you both are just rolling with what you have (which I guess is logical since you stated that none of you know what the other designer comes up with), but hopefully you at least have an outline for what you want to happen. Looking forward to this.

P.S. Oh yeah, the one flaw I personally pointed out is the reference to the current pandemic. Seems a bit forced imo and will definitely look outdated with time, but that's just how I feel.

played the both missions. here's a review:

Notna's mission was already telling us what's happening, rescuing an important guy. who's the important guy? of course it's the brothers' unity, as we drive to the police station to pick up the brother. we get introduced to him, what he's done - and he goes by the name Basil (or Bazz) liked that name rhyming, which RithRake may coincidentally created another mission about rapping; rhyming - etc. liked the connection! anyways, the name Basil surprised me - his name means someone fearless, brave which the character Notna writed. i can tell you did the research; lol. another thing i noticed when driving Dazz's car, the car's called "Emperor" as Dazz would be represented as the "emperor" here, due to giving tasks to Carver. like a boss.

the mission's dialogue was excellent, understandable and captive for the player. nonetheless, Basil right jumped onto killing Grove (the enemies) here. he really wants them gone, eh?

RithRake's mission also deserves the notice. as from my perspective, his dialogue improved - this mission is about a rapping guy who sucks; previewed by our Dolla! the opposition Rapper's name, Lil' Ice gives a representation of probably the writer. he was paid as revealed, as usually - money corrupts people if they get "over the top" and Ice can mean two things here: the Writer's joy for the money, as the dream car is what he wanted. another thing - Ice, killing. we get to kill his manager though, which Carver hilariously calls him "fat fool". adding "is history" is an good example and dialogue improvement. keep it up!

let's hope the symbolism i mentioned is actually done intentionally, lol

Jimmy_Leppard

As promised, a full chapter review! (I know you guys don't treat it as a regular chapter, but to me, 8 missions is like a ''full chapter'' since there are 8 slots for the missions at a time)

Before I get into it, I can say that I might've made a mistake. While I was waiting for you guys to finish a ''chapter'' so I can review the whole thing at once (I like to play a bunch of missions at a time rather than 1 or 2 because that way I get into the mission pack and the story most efficiently), it seems like everyone else already gave their reviews on most of the missions. So, now it's kinda hard for me to say something that hasn't been said already. Anyway, let's do this. :colgate:

The missions surprised me because of the tone of the whole mission pack so far. I wasn't expecting a ''gangsta'' setting, so that's cool. Something that was continuously on my mind was that the mission pack feels very similar to ''The Flats'' which was awesome :colgate:

@Notna, like @SatournFan said, I'm very glad to see that you've improved even more since your last mission pack. Your curve when it comes to mission designing has been on a continuous rise, bro. I commend you for that :colgate: On the other hand, @RithRake24, you haven't been a part of the community for as long as Notna has so you don't really have a ''track record'' yet, but it's as clear as day that you're one of the prospects of the community moving forward. You have the skills which are just gonna get better over time and I'm really happy you're a part of the community. I'm sure everyone else is. :colgate:

As far as the mission pack goes, spoiler alert:

The first mission establishes that Carver is a cold, badass guy who is all about the money. It also introduces a gang oriented supporting character, Dazz. He's been a great supporting character so far. The second mission already kicks it into higher gear with the introduction of Nat, but what was awesome about this mission was the vehicle/foot chase. Very well done. I actually loved the fact that the target didn't have a marker, so it made it more realistic as the player really has to keep an eye on the target by looking at the road instead of the map. In mission 3, we got the virus reference. I do understand SatournFan's point on that one. It's a joke which probably won't age that well over time, but it still works in present time and since I'm playing this in present time while the virus is unfortunately still active, I don't mind the reference at all. The mission has a lot of action in it which was very well done. I did smell the setup from a mile away though and I made sure both of those guys got the parting gifts in the form of headshots for that. :colgate: Mission 4 was great too. I loved the use of animations inside the barber shop. It's an interior that's not used very often. Out of all the 8 missions, that's the mission I had the most trouble with, believe it or not. I had trouble getting the Vago guy to stop the van. In the end, I somehow managed to push him to the side of the road and he got stuck between the fence and a tree, so that's when i made my move.

Mission 5 introduces Bazz, another awesome supporting character who makes a lethal combo with his brother Dazz, especially when you put their nicknames together. Dazz and Bazz. And finally, Carver showed some love towards his homies. The last 3 mission introduced a whole new subplot with the rappers and that was awesome. Ice/Dolla feud reminded me of the real life smaller scale feud between Pac and Biggie. And before you know it, I got the Pac reference I was hoping for. He's my all time favorite rapper and one of my favorite artists of all time, so… :colgate: Carver killed Ice's manager in mission 6, so one could assume that Ice is gonna *melt* soon unless he finds a new manager. In mission 7, Spook-O-Meter would've come in handy during the Sullivan cab ride bit. Too bad it was never implemented. I can't count how many times I wanted to have it in my missions. Mission 8 had 2 shootouts and all I can say is that I love the Tec-9. Question is, will Dazz be alright?

Overall, It's actually amazing how well you guys complement each other in this mission pack. A very well balanced duo. And the fact that you're taking turns and snowballing the whole thing as you go makes it way more fun, I'm sure. Keep it up, guys! :colgate:
