On a purely technical level, GTA V is a near-masterpiece, especially by 2013 standards. The game world feels organic, like an actual city and countryside rather than just a map full of stuff to do like so many open-world games (*cough*Ubisoft*cough*), and for a game that has to juggle a whole bunch of genres and gameplay types, it manages to do virtually all of them fairly well. Driving isn't realistic, but it's not meant to be, and as an arcade racer, it shines with fairly responsive controls and a diverse roster of vehicles that all feel distinct. (All it needs is cars that go faster than 130 mph, and that was more a limitation of the open world than anything.) Shooting is fun and responsive, especially in a well-made battle arena. It just feels like a game that had a lot of thought and care put into how its gameplay is going to function. Where it does falter, it's in areas that were mainly expanded after the game came out that I don't think the original gameplay was designed to handle.

It's in the writing where the game falls short for me. The big problem for me is that the single-player story felt mainly like Michael's story, with Trevor and Franklin feeling like supporting characters and getting a lot less development. Trevor was largely defined in opposition to Michael, and Franklin's story petered out halfway through, only being brought up again during the finale; for most of the second half of the game, he's Michael's henchman, and most of what he does is connected to him. And even Michael was a pinball protagonist who was largely bossed around by others, particularly FIB agents Dave Norton and Steve Haines. Trevor, I feel, should've been the villain (and maybe the subject of a prequel DLC campaign), his personal beef with Michael from the Ludendorff heist causing him to try and kill him, and more time given to fleshing out Franklin as a protagonist on equal standing with Michael. Perhaps have him bring his crew (Lamar et al.) to start working with Michael, and perhaps getting their own ideas on how to make money and who to rob? And, to tie in with the part about making Trevor the villain, having them decide to try and take over his drug empire, and maybe collaborate with the Lost (and Johnny Klebitz) to do so? (It would've been better than how aimless the story otherwise was.) The satire also felt a lot goofier and more shallow than before, going for the easy jokes rather than cutting much deeper, especially now that Lazlow no longer anchored it (by providing a "real" figure to comment on the madness of the GTA world) but instead had been fully absorbed into it as another wacky character. The "By the Book" mission felt like a microcosm of this, unable to make up its mind on whether or not torture was wrong. On one hand, you get a lengthy rant from Trevor about how torture doesn't work that's clearly the intended message they tried to send, yet afterwards, if you check the news website, you find that you actually got the man the FIB was searching for. Sure, it turns out he was innocent, a philanthropist even, but even so, torturing a man got you accurate information on his whereabouts and what he looked like.

And while I can admire the technical achievement of GTA Online and the massive amount of content it has on offer, especially now, I can't do the same for its increasingly greedy monetization.

I still don’t think GTA V’s overrated however now it’s getting released again on the PS5 (and I guess XBSX) will we finally be see some of the things that apparently were held back with “hardware limitations”? As far as I’m concerned this has to be the ultimate version of GTA V and there’s no excuses regarding hardware limitations like people have been defending for years, but I’m not optimistic at all.

I’d like to think there might be something worthwhile about it, but it seems like it’s just a way of setting GTAO up for next gen. Even if by some miracle it does feature the things people have always wanted like DLC for example it’s taken three console generations to get up to that standard which is just sad IMO.

No way I don’t think any real effort will be put into this ‘remaster’ it’s only for online really. 60fps and a resolution bump but nothing more.

I wish they would have just remastered IV and V in a double pack. I still can’t play IV on anything but my PS3. Which died yesterday. So now I can’t play it. lol

My condolences.

My PS3 died about 3 years ago, but luckily I had GTA IV on 360 so I just play it on my XB1 now until that dies and I don't know what I'd do lol. But yeah. I think most people would've preferred GTA IV being remastered in some kind of capacity. Maybe for GTA V it would've been better if all we played all these years is what was on the 7th gen consoles and R* updated it with a new version like most developers do when they "remaster" an old game, but the fact it was already released on PS4 and XB1 makes it feel completely unnecessary.

Yo what’s this about PS3’s dying? Should I be worried? I’m planning to buy the 3D universe games on PS3... but if they’re dying maybe I shouldn’t??

Well mine just started shutting off randomly, but I guess like anything that gets to a certain age wear and tear eventually takes over.

Yes. GTA online is overrated. It’s tedious and boring. GTA v’s story mode had great potential but they got greedy. GTA online on Xbox 360 was a fresh breath of air when I got on it last week. No business, no overpriced bs, and no flying motorcycles. I feel like the story mode gets overlooked these days which sucks.

This is not the GTA Online section but GTA V (story mode)

I also think GTA Online is overrated, but GTA V was not. Great game for 2013, especially considering the limitations of the consoles it was first released on.
