@paperbagdude. Interesting points but I have to disagree. III and VC were liked then and are liked now. SA was liked (mostly) then and IV pitted two types of GTA fans against the other. Both sets of fans still mostly prefer SA or IV respectively over V which tells you something. V was criticised from almost the word go and is still criticised now. I'd also say it doesn't have a large hardcore base like SA and IV do. If VI does well (in the eyes of fans - I don't mean financially) I feel V will be overshadowed.

@Payne. Ok. If you're not going to contribute to your own topic then fair enough. I will look at your older posts at some point.

@Ryo256. Great post. I think you've argued it well. Trevor didn't have to be as psychotic as he was - he was just too much for many. Many fans wanted to play a protagonist at the top of their game and Michael wasn't really that. The pursuit of the almighty dollar with the heist theme didn't really materialise and was masked by the FIB/IAA/Merryweather storyline that most find uninteresting. The character of Michael took a lot of influence from Heat and I think most fans expected a story line like Heat or The Town. I agree with what you say and how you argued that it could have been done in a more traditional sense but still felt fresh and different.

The removal of IV's physics and interiors aspects I can only put down to console limitations. In the days following V's release I'm certain there was topics on here by people who couldn't believe that the fast food outlets - developed so much in SA and IV - were partially removed in V. Even odder when they'd featured new fast food outlets like Up 'N Atom Burger in their trailers.

Truthfully I've always liked GTA V to some extent.

It's just I lingered too much on the things that disappointed me. I obviously don't like it as much as GTA IV, but it's a worthy entry to the series.:)

Same..I enjoyed it but often compared its story and characters with GTA IV and in comparison its not as great but honestly its still better than the other GTA games in these areas with more fleshed out characters (Michael being my favourite), better written dialogue etc.

Overall I think its my second favourite GTA game now.

Very overrated, and severely neglected as far as SP goes.

YEP INDEED.

Nothing has changed for me. I still think V is quite a disappointment for me in single player, and hardly play V these days. In fact, I've not played V since the beginning of last year. I won't even discuss V Online because I don't play it at all. I've just being playing a lot of San Andreas modded (and still modding it) and GTA IV modded. I've recently been playing Vice City modded too. I just got so bored of V's too many shortcomings - repetitive, boring map, very small number of of crime side missions, rubbish corrupt government/agent-centered main storyline and weak characters.

I've been modding many things from V to SA to make SA and V worlds connected, and I'm having a blast !

I don't think so. After SA and TBoGT, V has the best and most fun missions. Sorry for IV diehard fans, but the missions in IV are very repetitive and forgettable (except some of them). Sure, the story was short and rushed and is probably the worst story (by a narrative point of view) in GTA history. But V compensates with fun missions, impressive city (which still looks incredible on pc in 2020) and overall more stuff to do and a more accessible world than IV.

The online component is often bashed (and many times for good reasons), but it has some of the best content that I played with friends in online gaming. Still searching for something in online to give those heart beats like that time when we did Criminal Mastermind on OG heists.

As a conclusion: no, it's not overrated. It did some things good, other things bad (short story, not having stuff like vigilante missions etc.), but overall is a very good game. Now you can see some flaws, but in 2013 was ahead of its time. And if you play online with friends, I can't see how that is not fun.

No

The story and multiprotagonist thing I never really liked, also the lack of single player DLC kinda sucks. It was ok for a playthrough.

But the map, the mechanics, the setting, all great.

The support for online has been huge,

It is a 7+year old game it is still evolving and we are still playing and talking about it,

Including people that say they do not like it? Why does it interest you enough to comment on it 7 years later unless you do actually like the game, really?

I don't think its overrated, and with all the improvements to the game Rockstar implemented, I can't wait to see what they come up with for GTA VI.

I don’t think it’s overrated; it’s mediocre as a GTA game, and by what I had come to expect from Rockstar up to that point, but it still outclasses many games from other developers especially other open world games.

I thought it was amazing at first, took a while before I started noticing its flaws, which are not really game breakers, they just mean it’s not everything it could be.

Rockstar were pretty smart to make cuts where most people won’t notice, like the physics.

Online was also really fun in its early days, when the entire lobby would hunt you down for a 1k bounty.

I find it a good game yes however i do find it overrated to hell also, some people treat it like the coming of christ or something when it's a downgrade from previous games in the series in many aspects

Good news ChiroVette, it turns out GTA VI is just a re-release of GTAV! It's literally what you loved, again, please pay full price. 😛

I still don’t think GTA V’s overrated however now it’s getting released again on the PS5 (and I guess XBSX) will we finally be see some of the things that apparently were held back with “hardware limitations”? As far as I’m concerned this has to be the ultimate version of GTA V and there’s no excuses regarding hardware limitations like people have been defending for years, but I’m not optimistic at all.

I’d like to think there might be something worthwhile about it, but it seems like it’s just a way of setting GTAO up for next gen. Even if by some miracle it does feature the things people have always wanted like DLC for example it’s taken three console generations to get up to that standard which is just sad IMO.

I enjoyed it, but it indeed is overrated, in the sense that way too many people think it’s the pinnacle of GTA.

People who played it once or twice, and those whose first (and usually only) GTA game was V, see the huge number of sales and the existence of an active multiplayer mode as a sign it’s the perfect GTA game. Even in circles that usually make fun of typical gamer bullsh*t, I’ve noticed incessant defense and praise of GTA V, solely because of the “high sales = good” mentality.

I chose kinda because I have to give credit for some of its features. Being able to replay missions from the menu, 2 options for each heists, physics are good for stunting, these are all good. But the story and the characters are what ruined it for me and the lack of singleplayer content. That is why I am going with the kinda option.

Very overrated!!! GTA 5 for PS5 before IV, RDR 2, RDR and before VCS for Android???

Also Online is not a GTA, is only named a GTA. If no one buys GTA 5 for PS5 and buys shark cards (who would do that?) they will improve.

I feel it was a great game for what it was back in the day, but Cockstar continues to shove it down our throats to this very day. So yes, I would say it was overrated.

People will probably think I'm biased due to the recent GTA V remaster news, but IMO, Both GTA V and RDR2 are overrated and kinda showed me there's a reviewer bias when it comes to Rockstar's games. They are great games but they have flaws that, normally would be enough to remove points on a normal game score, but the same flaw gets overlooked on a Rockstar game.

I know this is about GTA V, but since you mentioned RDR2 I have to somewhat agree that it's a bit overrated. I still regard it as my favourite non-GTA R* game, but I have to admit it's not as great as when I first played it. In fact everytime I try to play it now I usually just end up becoming bored and I didn't really overplay it or at least not to the extent some people have. I only finished it twice.

It's a fair point though regarding reviewer bias. It's a bit like Naughty Dog's games that always seem to receive universal acclaim no matter what. The flaws present in GTA V, RDR2... hell even GTA IV if they were made by another developer would probably see them lose a couple of points. I have no doubt they'd still be rated respectably, but we probably wouldn't see as many 10/10s across the board. I also feel that some reviewers may be a bit biased due to R*'s reputation in the industry and being the pioneers of the open world genre hence they may feel hesitant to mark them down.

Anyway even though I rate GTA IV 10/10 that's really only my subjective opinion when in reality I know it probably doesn't really deserve that. Very few games if at all truly deserve perfect scores, but when it comes to reviews I kind of prefer listening to gaming channels on Youtube by regular gamers just like us than paid reviewers that usually seem to swing towards being overly generous or marking down a game too harshly *cough** IGN *cough*.

The reason I find GTA V overrated is it's the absolute definition of what I like to call "The Rockstar Mentality"...

the actual question would be how much overrated it is, and the answer would still be YES.

I don't the think the game it's overrated. The game itself is a child of its own time. A time where catchy and memorable content is displaced by sophisticated graphics in a global way it affects literally everything in the whole game to the point where you can't tell no difference between a Rockstar title from a Voliton one (Saints Row *wink*)

I rather old titles to the new ones. Time is already a reasonable factor to prejudge something as particular as a GTA title.

If we rate the game in accordance to his sale numbers then we can get back to the same point; globalization, hype, growing population in the gaming industry.

There's nothing memorable, unique or hilarious V or its Online mode has brought us like SA and IV did. (And no, it's not the nostalgia of old games.)

I think V is characterized for being a phony representation of the American culture instead of its counterculture. Similar happens to The Simpsons.

It's different for old GTAs as they managed to make a very interactive gameplay where you could actually feel connected to the plot in a very-limited hardware era and you had quite a lot of fun because everything was greatly tied inbetween everything. Things made """good""" sense.

GTA V just feels... dull.
