I am a chosen one!

I have had a letter come today asking me to take part in the Her majesty's goverments covid 19 testing programme. I will receive a testing kit which I am to run around my chosen tonsils and the back of my chosen nose which will be returned to se if I have the virus.

You may bask in my glory.

Go on!

I did the test 4 months ago....

They just sent a request for my 15 year old daughter to do one, but she's not keen.

I've had about 10 or so by now. I'm starting to grow a little bored of them, I have to be honest.

I've had none and it's staying that way. Everyone else can get tested instead. The only thing going up my nose is my finger wrapped in a bit of tissue to remove some stubborn bogies.

On topic, heard a nurse with what sounded like a dry cough while she was talking to an ambulance parked outside my flat. Was letting my dog out to do her business but had to go the long way around my flat to avoid the area where the nurse coughed. Wouldn't mind but it was raining and she coughed after I passed her.

Detective Phelps

Well, final year medical students like me are now classed as "essential workers". Our placements are really varied, so some are having good placements (like me!), whereas others are feeling like they would have rather intercalated instead (it's basically taking a year to do a bachelors or masters degree, it adds points to the foundation school application). Cases in the area are rising and all we're being told is "oh we know your rotations last less than a month but if you get ill we'll help you catch up! No worries"... as if that's a feasible plan. I've seen restaurants here BLATANTLY ignoring social distancing and mask guidance. NOT EVEN GLOVES OR MASKS ON THE PEOPLE HANDLING FOOD!

Other than that, getting fit tested for PPE was NOT fun. The bitter taste... ughhhh well, it sure as f*ck is better than the sweet one, since it's easier to see if the mask fails

I swear, literally all of your posts have been "So I was walking and heard this person cough...". I feel like after the pandemic is "over", you will have this long-term paranoia of people coughing. This is not good for you mental well-being.

If self preservation is a mental illness then consider me mental. I'll literally go a different route down a street to avoid groups of people if I can't cross over because of passing cars. I ain't risking catching it to see if I die or get mild symptoms. Rather be an overly cautious nutcase than dead.

You're missing my point. This pandemic will most likely leave you with long-term paranoia. You'll probably be taking these precautions long after the pandemic is over, because of the fear that the virus may still be lurking around the corner.  A simple cough from someone will scare you away.

Say you live with someone, and they let out a cough. Are you gonna exit your house and sleep on the streets or in your car? Where do you draw the line?

Hahaha I LOLed reading this. Unless you're over 80 or have a very serious other condition, you are more likely to die from bee stings, heat stroke or getting hit by someone on a bicycle.

I suggest you get on Amazon and get yourself a plastic bubble STAT!

@Arrows to Athens I know what you mean. Once they're able to treat it I'll be able to relax. But even after that I'm still going to wear gloves shopping and touching money. Might take me a while to get out of the habit of wiping my shopping with antibacterial wipes though.

Also healthy people with no underlying conditions have died from it. I have mild asthma.

He actually has asthma, which I believe puts him in the risk group. According to asthma.org.uk, those with more severe cases of asthma are more likely to get severe illness. But even then, this level of paranoia is certainly not good for his mental health.

But the virus will continue to exist and may be seasonal, just like the flu. You will less likely to get it after being vaccinated, but you can still get it.

The virus can still get on to your gloves, but if it means you are less likely to touch your face with them on, go for it. As long as you have sanitizer on you, of course.

I highly doubt anti bacterial wipes will be effective at eliminating any virus, especially since they're anti "bacterial". It depends on which ones you're using, though.

Then I digress. He should take every precaution. Even with only mild asthma, if he gets it it will likely be very painful. Not very likely to die from it, though.

And my sincerest apologies to @JON22

Ironically, due to people social distancing and keeping clean, I haven't seen anyone with the common cold or flu. And I haven't seen anyone cough since February. This is partly because those people are actually healthier than last year (unless they get infected), and I think this is partly because people don't want to be seen as being infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The country that I live in never had a total lockdown. People are allowed to exercise outside.

Just to clarify, I was speaking about JON22 specifically, since he was being extremely paranoid about the virus and people coughing out in the streets, but you've got a good point.

I literally hold my breath and walk by them if they cough not the best thing to do though. I should just avoid the area.

I'm pretty sure the virus can just enter through the eyes and nasal passages. Holding your breath won't do anything.

Actually most of the recent research suggests that people with asthma are at no greater risk of complications than people without. There was a paper published a couple of weeks ago that showed no higher a rate of hospitalisation amongst asthma sufferers as their wider age group.

This doesn't account for today's 916 cases. Nothing is planned. The government doesn't want to close schools or workplaces nor do they want to take any meaningful measures.

Why are you so against getting a test? What's your long-term plan if you develop symptoms? The "everybody else but me" attitude isn't going to get you anywhere. I'm not having a go, I'm just curious. If you were to develop symptoms, wouldn't you rather know for the sake of everybody else around you as well, just to make it easier for others that feel just like you? Imagine if somebody you had to interact with had the virus and you didn't know because they didn't know either. It just sounds really ignorant from the outside, but maybe I'm wrong. I personally feel better when that negative result text message comes through.

Pardon the TikTok link, but I saw this some days ago and I had to dig it up and share it. Obviously not everybody is in the position to invent their own antiviral diving bubble helmet, but one can dream.

I would have changed key words after about 20 seconds, but I admire your persistent nature, even if it probably a lie.

And on my part, I may have been better served sending you to Mc Master instead.

It's the nose probe. If I can get tested without that I'd have a test. Also I'm paranoid I'll catch the virus from someone else at the test sight waiting to be tested, or from the person doing the test. Or some coronavirus will blow towards me just as I'm being tested because the test sight is outside. I'm just super paranoid and overthink different scenarios. I don't have much of a social life anyway (how I like it) so if I get it it's because someone where I work passed it onto me.

Also if I had symptoms I'd drag myself there nose probe or not.

@sivispacem at the rate I'm currently (trying) to save money it would take me 8 years to afford that. I'd get that cheaper one from the post you quoted but then I'd feel like an idiot wearing one.

Look, I get you being worried about having the virus, but being afraid of the nose probe? I think you're taking this a bit too far...

I'm going to wards every weekday. There is a risk, but there's also a risk of a car accident on the way there, and there's a risk of a fire in the building I'm currently in. Don't let the virus take over your life. Even if you get it, the chances of you actually dying from it (despite your asthma) is not as high as you think. Think about seeing your GP (I'd word it differently if I could), this seems to be affecting your mental health. We're all in this together.

@Craigsters Enough said about your mask picture 👍, I'd give it another like If I could.

Too bad people would rather get all political instead of following some very now simple basic hygiene & safety rules. If people want to forgo health & safety measures and they end up in hospital they don't deserve the use of a ventilator, make them suffer & pay the consequences for wanting to be stupid. Unfortunately this is the only way to send a clear wakeup call as heartless as it sounds, then again the people following the theories & further promoting it don't probably have much of a heart anyway.

Oh, I did change my key word. Multiple times. I'm very adept at Amazon shopping these days. Closest I found was "portable sneeze guards". I didn't try weather-related gear and I've been wondering if that might bring up something closer.
