The Coronavirus Thread

One of my neighbors told me that Iran has no money for medications supplies what not to take care of the Coronavirus  in there country and that Iran went to the world bank looking for a loan to help them with it, and the same  neighbor said that two high ranking government official's that handle there health care system had died from Coronavirus

There's  talk of my country going into quarantine in three weeks for 14 days, no airports or businesses open, not sure if the national guard well be out to watch this over

I think it's being over blown. Yes it's a contagious disease, but you're more likely to die from the flu than coronavirus.

It's entirely too early to make that determination.  Especially considering how most of the world has been exposed to some strain of the flu virus, and has built an immuno-response to it...which is completely unlike COVID-19 because it's completely novel.

The flu mortality rate is 0.1%.  COVID-19 is likely 10-20 times that percentage (1-2%).  Of course, those fatality numbers spike in elderly and immuno-comprised cases.

I've been using this website if I want to get my data itch scratched. I know there are likely hundreds like this but this was the cleanest and easiest to follow for me. It shows new cases, recovery statistics and deaths.

Nice site.  For what it's worth, if anyone has a vested interest in Italy's numbers, here a little more granularity.

Some news say there’s a higher(x14) chance for smokers to have the virus. You think its some bs?

That probably stems from a study out of South Carolina:

Quote

In current severe global emergency situation of 2019-nCov outbreak, it is imperative to identify vulnerable and susceptible groups for effective protection and care. Recently, studies found that 2019-nCov and SARS-nCov share the same receptor, ACE2. In this study, we analyzed four large-scale datasets of normal lung tissue to investigate the disparities related to race, age, gender and smoking status in ACE2 gene expression. No significant disparities in ACE2 gene expression were found between racial groups (Asian vs Caucasian), age groups (>60 vs <60) or gender groups (male vs female). However, we observed significantly higher ACE2 gene expression in smoker samples compared to nonsmoker samples. This indicates the smokers may be more susceptible to 2019-nCov and thus smoking history should be considered in identifying susceptible population and standardizing treatment regimen.

https://www.preprints.org/manuscript/202002.0051/v1

Of course, chronic smokers also have the sort of complications (hypertension, lung damage, etc.) which would lead to serious/critical cases for something like COVID-19.  So, it makes sense that smokers would have that multiplier.

In any case, because fear is truly the greatest motivator, I quit smoking cigarettes 10 days ago.  Probably not long enough remove myself as a "high-risk candidate," but still.  I suppose that you've gotta start somewhere.

And I'm still grouchy as f*ck.

I'm a former smoker myself.  Haven't smoked since 2011...and I was a heavy smoker for nearly 30 years.  Worth it.  Tuff it out...hang in there.

My wife has a compromised immune system thanks to Graves disease.  Toss in menopause and she's near panic over this coronavirus.  It doesn't help that we commute via public transit with all the coughing dirtbags and all...plus we work in heavily populated big ass buildings with all sorts of people who are eligible to have come in contact.

Love the way you view stuff.

About this virus or whatever. I heard this thing have no effect on children much, is that true?

Like any virus, those with weaker immune systems are more vulnerable.  But with children, it’s not that their really more or less susceptible, but their bodies can react faster.  Compared to older people, as you age your healing rate slows down and so does your body’s ability to fight contaminants, repair damage, etc.

Most of the deaths are the result of developing pneumonia from the virus, which is the inflammation of lung tissue to the point where oxygen can’t get across cell membranes.  Then the cells die and pus and fluid forms in the lungs.  With decreased lung capacity comes a decreased ability to expunge this stuff.  Essentially your body drowns itself and you die.

Children are just able to handle it better, typically.  I’m in my late 30’s now and I notice it takes me longer to get better.  Especially respiratory stuff.

I predict later in life (hopefully not soon!) that my likely cause of death will be this way.  I’ve already written down that that I want my hospice care to include LSD and/or psilocybin.  I want my final journey to be a fun trip!

I'm not quite sure what's going on in that pillock's head. Just wash your hands whilst singing happy birthday and allow the schools to be open.

Agreed man. F*cking Tom Hanks and his wife has since been diagnosed with this virus so I'm already on edge after this. It's just not fair man. Why Hanks ...No one is Immune to this but it sucks. It really does. It's just a matter of time before any other famous actors or celebrity catches this. There's no f*cking way any famous person or the rich and wealthy are going to have the upper hand and purchase the necessary things to quickly cure the disease compared to the many people who are infected because

THERE IS NO CURE ...."not panicking" :panic:

Where is the end of this going to be exactly?

I've been hearing loads of people coughing while I'm at work cleaning the BTP office at my local railway station. Worst thing is some of them don't even wash their hands after pissing in the urinal trough. I hate being a cleaner when viruses and bugs are going around.

If there's any silver lining to this, it's that the Hanks family diagnosis probably opened some eyes in America regarding the gravity of this situation.

If biggest celebrity to become infected with COVID-19 was bit player from Glee or a frequent guest-star from Law and Order: SVU...?  Nobody would really give much notice.

But Tom Hanks?  Celebrated A-List Actor, Tom Hanks?  Comedic/dramatic American national treasure, Tom Hanks?  It definitely deflates the "It's just the flu, bro!" argument to a significant degree.

Today, as a preventive they shut down all schools K-12 for the day, starting Monday morning all or 99% of schools will be completely shut down for 3 weeks.

All major events are postponed and we flight restrictions flying into the country.

Whether we like it or not, this is sh*t is real and its get real weird quick...

I went shopping yesterday, every damn store is out of toilet paper and general groceries.

I'm sorry, but if you aren't being sarcastic, I have to call you out on it. Because if you aren't joking, this is one of the most ignorant statements, I've read yet. The big deal is death, from an unknown/new, highly contagious virus that's estimated conservatively by some virologists that it will kill nearly half a million people, with over 1000 deaths in Italy alone and over 5,000 deaths worldwide. The fact that's highly contagious and you may not feel symptoms for up to 4 days but still be contagious isn't helping.

What's your point? People die in boating accidents too. How is this relevant to COVID19? "Guys, flu kills old people, lets give up." 😛

And you realise people are dying in their 30s, 40's and 50's. Over 60 just puts you at higher risk. So does being a smoker and being obese. And I'm sure those 1000 people that died in Italy had flu before, perhaps multiple times. Now a new corona virus comes around and wipes them out.

5 hours ago, Awful Waffle said:

We're not try to keep some old people/baby quotas like some sort of supply/demand ratio for toilet paper in a supermarket. These are people's parents, husbands, wives, children, from all sorts of backgrounds. And being in their 60's people are still working, still have families to provide for, still have more life and retirement to look forward to. Not that I even have to justify their existence to you.

People in their 60's and over are high-risk. You know how many millions of people in their 30's, who have a parent, in their 60's?

Iran just building new mass graves for the laugh, I suppose.

@Mister Pink I have to agree with you,

The ignorance is high here... But I think its the younger generation that brushes it off like its nothing and makes jokes about it.. Its the people with families, kids and people who care about there futures that need to worry the most.

I think everyone should be worried right now. A global pandemic is slightly larger issue then "omg another flu LOL whats this one going to do kill somebody too?"

Yeah dudes, its going to kill you, your mom, your dad, your grandma and your grandpa if you dont grow the F up and start dealing with this sh*t like the rest of the world already is. Be an adult, take it seriously, wash your damn hands, use some sanitizer and FFS cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze..

I'm with you. And without being hyperbolic about it. As I told my gf who's in a part of the world near the US that isn't affected by this as much, I said, don't panic. No need to be hysteric, but do take it very seriously.

And covering the mouth the coughing or sneezing is a pet-peeve of mine. The amount of people that don't do this anyway, is mental.

Reuters published a piece about a study that says as much as 20,000 viruses can be expelled in a single cough. No wonder flu and colds spread so quick, especially when people don't take the minimum courtesies and precautions of covering the mouths when coughing.

And in my country, it's just getting worse. From 34 to 69 cases, my country's health ministry is just too underestimating this thing. I kind of afraid on what will happen later if they keep downplaying on anything about the virus. Hope y'all safe and sound. 🙁🙁

Its simply because we as a nation, country or world, do not actually know what this virus is, we have no idea how to stop it and we have no idea how big it will become or how long it will last. The unknown is whats effecting people, so yeah that makes people act a little crazy. But if your like me and my wife.. We are planners, we have already been planning for this for a long time, maybe not this but this type of deal. We have ammo stocked, canned foods, "bug out" bags. Ya never know what could happen in this world, better to be safe then sorry at this point!
