Proof that R* was lying and manipulating in terms of screenshots

Recommended Posts

Back then in 2011, 2012 and 2013, R* themselves initiated and fired the hype regarding GTA V by praising the game themselves, releasing some screenshots every few months, and by using that sparse information policy which indicated that "they were hiding a lot".

One thing I remember is that R* said that they only release un-edited ingame footage/screenshots of the game. Well, everybody who remembers the first trailer back in 2011 knows that this was a lie.

You remember that infamous Chiliad scene in trailer #1 with those hikers? That area made the map seem absolutely massive (more massive than it is), Chiliad looks way, way bigger, and it seemed those hikers were in a remote and isolated forest area (just listen to the birds in the background). I think everybody was kinda disappointed that in reality this area looks completely different, and those hikers were standing right next to a busy highway. I think R* intentionally didn't show the highway to fire the hype, I think they intentionally mislead the fans with this scene. I mean, that area looks completely different, and the leaked beta map in the beta thread proves that the highway was always there. R* just didn't show it, intentionally put in those bird sounds, and used a camera angle to make the freeway disappear, only give the illusion that this was a remote and isolated area, which it is NOT in the final game.

Then, yesterday, I was browsing through the "GTA V Then and Now"-thread. There I found this (props to user @Choco Taco who found this out and made the comparison):

OrnmoVg.jpg

Just look a the mountains on the right. On the pre-release screenshot, the right mountain looks completely different, and the radio tower is NOT visible. But as you can see in the bottom picture, the mountain has a different shape, and the radio tower IS there. It seems that R* has actually photoshopped the pre-release screenshot to remove the radio tower and to change the mountain shape. This made the map seem larger, because nobody really had a clue in which area this picture was taken. So again, it seems that R* intentionally mislead the fans with pre-release screenshots, they manipulated this particular screen to avoid leaking that Los Santos is right next to that "remote countryside area" and that they had basically shown an overview of a huge chunk of the map.

And no, I don't think his mountain was simply changed, a change like that would be ENORMOUS and I think the terrain itself was basically finished in the first trailer. And Vinewood Hills with the radio tower were already there in the first trailer and in early screenshots..

And I think this has nothing to do with "touching up things for the trailer or for promotional screenshots, to make it look better". Showing that hiker scene in trailer #1 or manipulating this screenshot via photoshop to make the map seem larger than it is, that's just misleading as hell. And they did that on purpose, to fire the hipe.

So R*, thanks for your honesty, and I can't wait for the GTA VI trailer with manipulative camera angles which will make a backyard in the city seem like a dense forest.

Rockstar, instead of creating a good map, had to use all kinds of methods to trick us that the map is, indeed, good.

Interesting.

They did the same sh*t here. I was thinking the city was vast and went on for miles, when in reality they just covered Vespucci with smog.

And while we're on the topic of bullsh*ttery what the f*ck was this

man, i can't believe that the pedestrians and world had more life in the first trailer, than they do in the final game. the trailer had things like the guy getting kicked out of the nightclub.... but you never see things like this in V. yeah, rockstar lied.

No GTA map Rockstar makes will ever live up to San Andreas' in terms of variety and balance if they do this again. I remember hoping that the V map would bring back the feeling I got from SA's map but alas it couldn't hold a candle to it in the end.

No GTA map will EVER live up to that of IV and EFLC. Never has. Never will. This thread is also right. R* = liars, liars, pants on fire. Couldn’t go to bed with telephone wires.

I think VI might have a chance. Especially if they bring LC back XD

Personally, Los Santos is amazing but never used good in missions. San Andreas had a better use of all three cities.

Couldn't agree more

Some more lies

-Trailers and screenshots showed a lot of trees and vegetation, the final game heavily trimmed the vegetation and removed a lot of trees cuz "CoNZol LiMiTaTiON"

-Tequi-la-la is shown to be accessible in Trailer 1. In the final game it can only be accessed during a mission and then it's locked permanently

-2405, enough said

-The Gameplay Trailer shows purchasable properties, which is unsurprisingly Online-exclusive in the final game

- Cockstar once saying NPC supposedly have daily routine, in the final game, the NPC is on par with 3D Era

Trying to justify the development and the compromises done in the final product in relation to the marketing of the game? Trying to defend R*?

Ha, I was the most hyped (and later the most disappointed) with the hikers scene. Such a let down.

while i do agree that rockstar should not do this kind of false screenshots or trailer clips. i still think gta 5 is still one of the best gta games. its not perfect of course. but it still has a big map with beautiful scenery. and even if rockstar does the same false marketing like that. im sure it will still be a great game. i dont think rockstar should do this. but i wont complain or be pissed off. i will continue to enjoy the game.

Not that weird at all, is it? Especially in comparison to the predecessors, in which they didn't need to manipulate their customers (or not this far at least).

For this one, it was proven only Trailer 1 had the extra and alternate vegetation, Trailer 2 onwards matched the arrangement we saw in the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game. They blamed consoles for this but personally it was probably something to do with the models they used considering they switched them out completely on PC/Next Gen. Hell even San Andreas on PS2 had more foliage and trees due to how they optimized it.

Another debunked one as that area was just "cleaned up" in the final game, there were houses in the district over that had the bins and trash outside and garden props. The only thing removed was the finer texture detail like having the numbers on the ground and the house itself having a window open (considering how Rockstar treated interiors in GTAV though it was probably culled).

Sure, sure. This place, 2405, gave many players some kind of vibe, which was removed from Grand Theft Auto V.

I didn't know that, can you provide a link or something with an explanation?

So that "hiker scene" from trailer 1 has never looked like that in the game, only in the first trailer? That actually makes it worse. This, combined with the photoshopped picture I have posted in my opening post, simply shows that R* wasn't completely satisfied with the map themselves, like @RtRick said.

Just imagine:

"Hey, no, alter the camera angle a little, so they can't see the highway below the mountain"

or

"Please photoshop that mountain, so they can't see that Los Santos is just right behind it" ......

This has nothing to do with "touching up the graphics" of the game for the trailers and screenshots, they intentionally show false and misleading footage and screenshots...

You think you're the first person to make a thread about this? Search for similar threads a few years ago, there was an in-depth comparison made between all the trailers and it turned out only trailer 1 was heavily different, trailer 2 and 3 looked near identical to PS3 and Xbox 360, same goes for the character trailers. Screenshots were still edited though.

@Ash_735

No I don't think I'm the first person to make a thread like this.

I know the "GTA V Then and Now" and the "GTA V Beta Hunt" threads which show comparisons between trailers/screenshots and the actual game. I have also seen and read similar threads regarding Chiliad and cut trees. But all of those threads are about "console limitations", I have never read that R* actually put extra (or different) vegetation and trees in the first trailer which have never ever been like that in the real game. That's why I asked for a link or so.

I mean the comparisons of trailer 1 alone show there's extra trees and vegetation that's missing in the final game but for a further view take a look at some in-game commercials, the Visit Los Santos one, that shows an earlier build of the game which had extra trees and such too. As for written proof, look at the development log that were left behind on the PS3 and Xbox 360 version of the game which at one point clearly notes vegetation being removed from downtown to improve streaming issues.

It's worth noting that trailer 1 had an incomplete Los Santos that was missing a huge chunk of the city, as seen in the 2405 moment with parts of downtown not being there.

While this is true, it's pretty stupid that R* doesn't add those removed trees in the Next Gen, but atleast they did added back those grass

I don't think you can tell the difference between exaggerating and outright lying but then again I'm not surprised
