John Marston's Hair

Recommended Posts

I'm so annoyed you can't play with John's original hair in the epilogue. It took Rockstar like 8 years to make RDR2, they added so many details it's ridiculous, and they couldn't manage to put this in!! Literally thousands of people want this so bad and it's almost like Rockstar doesn't care... for god sakes, some random NPCs have his hair smh. It would take so little effort and would be such a huge favor. Rockstar, please hear us out!

I still can't understand this obsession with Marston's hair

For a developer like Rockstar, and a game filled to the brim with the tiniest details, details that sometimes go unnoticed, it’s crazy to think they were too lazy to somehow implement different lengths of John’s original hairstyle instead of just reusing Arthur’s hair model and coloring it black. Or even having one of the max length styles be replaced with his classic hair. Or just not having the hair growth feature for John at all and him being stuck with his original hair.

The mission replay screens show him with his original hair. The promo screens released before the game launched showcase John in the epilogue with his original hair. There was a point where epilogue John had his original hair model, and then at some point they decided “screw continuity.”

But then at the same time they were able to disable swimming for John. They set their own standards and then don’t meet them. It’s puzzling.

@VideoTech UK Yeah josh posted that in the RDR2 Beta thread the other day. It’s actually JUST the hair model instead of using the John NPC in the epilogue. I’m assuming he found the hash since that was the big mystery for a while once we got save editors, but beyond that I’m not sure if he wrote a script to change the model at a certain length or what.

They clearly don't like John. They massacred his look in the Epilogue and the bugs aren't helping

They clearly do not focus to small things right now.

I don't think that they massacred his look, because 8 years have past between Chapter VI and Epilogue I/II + further 4 years between RDR2 and RDR.

During epiloque John tries to have or better say start a normal life for his family. This also affect his haircut.

So.... John is trying to be more mature by supergluing Arthur’s hair to his head, wearing trash bag gloves, bin holsters, disco pants and Arthur's chest and shoulders?

You can get his hair to look pretty much like what it looks like in RDR1. I don't see the big issue.

The issue is that its totally wrong. In a game full of little details, this BIG detail is overlooked. John's hair isn't meant to be Arthur's except jet black left parted

Well, He has a short haircut starting by Epiloque I, so that he does not look like the wanted guy John Marston.

The dress is the one of a normal (poor) worker.

Everything else and after start Epiloque I is the choice of the player, as it is for Arthur starting by Chapter II.

Yes, it the same options and body for both characters. But there are many options to have a differnt look for John and even one which is very close to RDR one.

This whole “he’s trying to look different” thing is just headcanon that people have put together to excuse the whole Arthur hair on John thing. It doesn’t help that the mission replay screens, including a cut one where John is building the fence at Pronghorn Ranch, he has his classic hair.

It has nothing to do with the story. It’s a hiccup in development. They either didn’t want to model different lengths and styles for John’s hair, or didn’t want to give him one hairstyle and scrap the hair growth mechanic after chapter six. The compromise would have been to have his classic hair be an alternate hairstyle unlocked when reaching max length, or actually replace one of the max length styles. But they didn’t. It’s the fingerless gloves all over again, times ten.

Plus the whole "John is on the run" argument starts to make a lot less sense when you realize that Abigail looks exactly like she did in 1899. Even IF that was the case though, John starts going by his real name around Epilogue Part 2 anyway. So there's really no excuse as to why John doesn't have his NPC hair as an option.

His default Epilogue haircut isn't even in correct color and what kind of a disguise huge-ass circus clown gloves with disco pants is?

Hello brothers.

I'll offer some help.

With very specific combination of hair + facial hair style and length, John gets to :

- Not look like Arthur whatsoever

- Look cool / good

- Look more like his RDR 1 self (keep in mind while the cover art for RDR 1 had the early RDR 2 hair, his actual ingame hair wasn't like that)

Image result for rdr 1 john

Here is how my John looks (ps4, no mod), and while it isn't perfect, keep in mind this is a cleaned up John years down the line. It worked for me and I hope it can help you get over how bad all his other options look.

If you want the best possible look for Epilogue John you should play on 1.00 and use pomaded Swept Back hairstyle as it has proper dark brown color.EM3HviR.pngTztRryD.png

Middle parted is a nice option, however John's 1899 hair is still closer to John's in-game RDR1 hair.

Digital version and I think many players realistically are updated now that they added AO and stuff back, or if they play online.

(on top of 1.00 having so many camp members disappearing forever glitch ...)

That's a nice tip for those that do have 1.00 though.

For sure, like I said it isn't perfect. But I can easily suspend my disbelief and just pretend John split his hair in the middle for some time. We often change hairstyles ourselves !

The middle parted on John looks like he could left part it and look like RDR 1.

While the actual left parted in RDR 2 turns him into Arthur Marston which I can absolutely NOT stand. Same with facial hair, between the glitches, the Arthur implantation etc... very little options make him look good while looking like himself, even if a little "inaccurate".

That's a trade off, you have no idea how much I hate seeing him fully shaven or with full beards, or with the left parted Arthur hair. It triggers me. The style I found is the only one where I was like "you know what, that looks like John and he's cool" despite not being flawless. That's why I wanted to share in case other people struggled finding looks that didn't give them Arthur + ugly vibes.

I agree on some level, I like middle parted but only when John has a hat on. If you keep the hat on he looks pretty similar to his RDR1 look, as soon as the hat falls off though it gets completely ruined for me. Back when I played on 1.00 middle parted was the look i stuck with, and it actually looked decent. JAbdTnB.png

Definitely not perfect though, he still needs his hair.

I've been also using Middle Parted style as well until I found out that Swept Back pomaded has correct color. I like Swept Back pomaded at length 6 with a hat on as it looks pretty much like John's beta RDR1 hair but less messy.

To be honest, what is "the real haircut of John Marston"?

I see a haircut in RDR2 Chapter I - VI, which does not match neither to RDR nor artwork of RDR nor artwork of RDR2.

I see a haircut in RDR2 Epiloque (growing) which does not match neither to RDR nor artwork of RDR nor artwork of RDR2.

I see a haircut in RDR, which does not match to artwork of RDR. Furthermore it cannot be changed in any way by RDR game limits.

Have you noticed that his ears are really different in RDR and RDR2? Of course ears grow during time and may change it's shape a bit, but it seems that R* did not take notice of the RDR ear shape at all.

To me "the real haircut of John Marston" would be his final RDR1 one as it's basically the same hair from artworks except artworks just show earlier version of same haircut which basically was just more receding. Similarly his RDR2 hairstyle is combination of grown out Jack and the aforementioned John's hairstyle.

And yes the ears do change lol they're slightly lower than his RDR1 ears in Chapter 1-6 and even more lower in the Epilogues. Interestingly since version 1.02 John uses Arthur's shoulders instead of his NPC ones like he do in 1.00.

The "correct" hair for John in RDR2 is the hair from Chapter 1-6. In the epilogue it is just Arthur's hair painted in black and right-parted.

It's both ridiculous and sad at the same time. This game is all about details, sometimes even unnecessary details (like the horse balls growing bigger or smaller) so yes... shame on you R*.
