After an extended break beginning in the spring of 2019, Dan Houser, Vice President, Creative at Rockstar Games, will be leaving the company. Dan Houser’s last day will be March 11, 2020. We are extremely grateful for his contributions. Rockstar Games has built some of the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful game worlds, a global community of passionate fans and an incredibly talented team, which remains focused on current and future projects.

Quite unexpected, though you can only stick it out in the same position for so long.

Wonder why now instead of waiting 'til after GTA 6 has dropped to get it done and dusted tho

Very shocking news, but not a tragedy I don't think. RDR2's production was very centred in Rockstar North and Rob Nelson's direction and it was the masterpiece we know of, it's very possible that Dan wasn't as involved with everything for a while now. It's not doom for GTA VI or anything as there's plenty other talented people at Rockstar and 99% sure more talented writers.

As I said tho, still really shocking. Sort of thought he'd wait until GTA VI was done to be able to exit with that success on his back.

Oh, and a reminder Rockstar's writing team was never only Dan. I think this would affect Rockstar A LOT more if we were talking San Andreas or IV days.

Weeks after rumours of Take-Two pressuring the studio to release more games, Dan Houser leaves Rockstar Games.

🤔

Absolutely megaton news for the industry though, he doesn't have the fame of a Kojima but he absolutely has just as much if not more influence. It will be very interesting to see what future Rockstar titles play like and are written like without his input.

I wonder if his departure was the result of some sort of creative differences between him and Take Two. Hopefully this doesn’t impact the development of GTA 6 and Bully 2.

Also where they're set. IIRC Dan was the one who said he couldn't imagine GTA working if it were set anywhere outside the US due to the series being a British satire of American culture at its core. Makes me wonder if T2 will stick to that now.

Hmm I assume the story would be complete then, I mean I wouldn't leave if it wasnt just because it has my name on it.  Its about having accountability and self respect at what you do. I guess Nelson, Sarwar and whoever comes next has to step up.

This is bad news. He was the mastermind behind all of Rockstar. The general direction of the games, the script, the story, the focus on singleplayer and the focus on quality (delaying a game when necessary).

Taking everything into consideration this seems like a forced resignation. I assume because of a disagreement over handling Rockstars franchises. T2 wants to milk them and put microtransactions everywhere. Dan Houser wants quality, wants to take his time and wants a great story.

Sad, hopefully Rockstar doesnt share BioWares fate...

The same concern happened when Leslie Benzies left the company and then we had RDR2, R * is a company made up of thousands of people, many of them have already taken the essence and the teachings left by the most important people like Dan, we will probably not see any drop in the quality of the games.

You don't know that. I too, would love to believe that the Houser brothers are all for quality and against microtransactions but that's just something we don't know.

Don't forget every other talented man and woman at Rockstar, this is not the end. I do wonder who will replace him, it must be someone from North who is close to him I imagine. Or someone else from the NYC writing team, but Dan was more than only a writer at Rockstar I assume.

The concern for Benzies leaving was largely for future GTA's and Rockstar North. Still, it was less of a concern because Sam and Dan were still at the studio, now Sam is the last man standing out of the trio.

Not that I think we should be fearmongering any of this because as you say, there's a lot of incredibly talented people at the studio. If this isn't Take-Two reigning in the studios famed independence, I have little doubt that the quality of their games will drop. If however this is Take-Two taking control, I would be fearful for Rockstar's future games, especially their single player experiences. We have absolutely no way of knowing for sure right now though, we'll just have to wait and see.

I wasn't worried at all when Leslie left, because he was more of a producer, Dan and Sam were still there (the story guys),and later only focused on the online modes.

Dan is something else.

And I was not talking about online microtransactions. I think the monetization of GTAO and RDO is done fairly well.

I'm talking about putting microtransactions in sp, focusing more on online and milking the franchises (like EA/Ubisoft).

This is what I think might happen.

R* will release more games that don't reach the standard that fans expect, their stories won't be as great but you can expect monetization everywhere.

Hopefully this is not the case but like Jason said, if it is T2 taking control, this sounds just like Activision eating Blizzard or EA eating BioWare.

I always said that as long as Dan Houser is at rockstar, I'm not worried about rockstar single player modes.

Now, I'm worried. Dan Houser has been a major creative force and practically was the main writer of every rockstar game since GTA 2. He's always seemed to prioritize story modes, even reading interviews with him about RDR 2.

Although I suppose RDR 2 is a good note to end it on - easily his magnum opus when it comes to script.

And you are basing this on Dan Houser leaving the company? Seems like a bit of an overreaction to me.

I am glad he's got the balls and the dignity to leave the R*. I truly hope that Rockstar receives the message he sent them by leaving.

Not only that.

A couple of weeks ago there were rumors about T2 pressuring Rockstar to release more games as well as T2 CEOs comments about monetizing users.

Well, it's Zelnick, what do you expect 😀. I think they know there would be a huge backlash if they tried to incorporate microtransactions into singleplayer.

It does make me wonder about the state of GTA VI. Inb4 it's actually almost done and as he leaves is when they announce it for a release this year or early next where the story is done and it's mostly design changes and bug fixing.
