Dan Houser leaving Rockstar Games

This. GTA 6 is probably already written, and Sam is still there to possibly oversee Dan's vision come through.

But GTA 7? Yeah, I'm betting RDR2 and GTA 6 will be the last good games we get from Rockstar. Now it's going to be gimped singleplayer modes with a focus on multiplayer unless Sam can do something about it.

Rockstar is and always will be these peoples:

Sam Houser

Dan Houser

Leslie Benzies

Aaron Garbut

Adam Fowler

Rupert Humphries

If they all leave, there is no more Rockstar.

Upsetting.  Only Sam Houser remains as one of the core founders of Rockstar.

Leslie, Dan, Christian Cantamessa, Adam Fowler... all gone.  Not to mention Stephen Bliss who defined R*'s unique visual style.

Too many big changes have happened at R* over the course of RDR2's release, the presence in the next games will be felt undoubtedly.

End of an era.  No question about it.

Definitely. It's hard to face that so much time has passed. We're in 2020 already, and Rockstar has been around for ages now. They've kinda been declining in different ways behind the scenes. It'll suck to see that inevitably reflect on their (singleplayer) games years from now. Whether or not it'll be completely negative is anyone's guess, but it will certainly feel very different.

EDIT: Jeronimo Barrera too, lots of big creatives.  I bet you 100 bucks Sam's feeling big pressure.

Don't forget Craig Conner! So many of the old team are gone.

Facking hell lads.  We've got an exodus.

I've pointed this out since 2014, during the back half of 2014 and through a lot of 2015 roughly all the big names at Rockstar North left. I was called paranoid and told that RDR2 will prove us all wrong that we don't need these people, and now Dan Houser leaves.

My money is on Lazlow leaving next.

Lock n' Stock

It's sad as hell, but it doesn't surprise me tbh. The Rockstar of today is very different from the one about 10 years ago, for better or worse. All I can hope is that this doesn't affect the quality of future titles.

wow, this is pretty shocking.

first Leslie and now Dan, I wonder what's going on behind the scenes at T2/R*, makes me wonder what's gonna become of the in the near future and how it will affect future titles.

After Benzie left, R* start to ignore SP, canceled the long promised Story DLC, turned GTAOnline into a mess (which reaches it's final point with RDO being a disguised mobile game)

After Dan left, I fear R* games no longer have a compelling story and writing like they used to, not to mention their 45 years worth of idea will be gone

This is the death of Rockstar. Dan's writing is a huge part of what made their games what they were. Virtually everyone who comprised the creative soul of Rockstar is gone now. All they have left is Aaron Garbut.

Very unexpected news, and I wonder if it has anything to do with the rumors of T2 pressuring Rockstar to have more frequent releases. It's a big deal that Dan is leaving as he was basically the primary writer since Grand Theft Auto 3, and that includes all the stories, characters, in-game media and lore. Sam is still there, but apparently he's working more of an executive producer and CEO than a creative role. Hopefully we don't see a shift in the quality and consistency of the writing moving forward. If Sam and Garbut also leave at some point, I'd then be very suspicious of what would come out of R* until they prove themselves again.

T2's share price post-market, following the announcement. It may see a further decline when the market opens on Wednesday.

Well that's it then. I really wished they pumped out one last GTA before this happened . Dan's writing style has always seemed unique to me in comparison to the rest of the industry. It's not amazing but it's unique in a way that you know it so you can say "yeah. That's Rockstar's writing". I'm really upset about this. Hope they have already finished writing VI which considering his last interview I highly doubt. Goddammit 2020 has had an awful start.

All good things come to an end right?

To have this many key team members leave the company, who in the last 6 years have made more money than religion, sex and booze put together, something is rotten in the state of Denmark.

22 years a fan of following Rockstar. Since 98. Since 2003 I've been lurking on these forums. I feel like slowly, over all that time, as generations past, and key members left, Rockstar is not the company it used to be, for better or worse. I am not the guy I used to be, for better or worse. I don't know what the future holds for my love affair with this company.

People are not going to agree with me, but I personally feel the WRONG Houser has left. Dan is a largely responsible for the writing, characters and tone that make up a Rockstar story. You can give me perfect art direction and fantastic cinematography, but without the typical story we get in a Rockstar game, it would just be a highly polished Ubisoft title, for me.

The other Houser is largely responsible for the oppressive atmosphere that has suffocated the company for years now, forcing out some of the names brought up here.

The wrong Houser left.

It's like Tarantino or The Coen Brothers, you recognize Dan's writing instantly when you see it

Fair dues though, he has mostly had co writers. They are due more credit. Rupert is staying.

I think leaving after Grand Theft Auto 6 would've been more poetic. Surely he already worked on the writing of the game, so it's sad to see him leaving well before the release. His name would probably still be included in a 'Special Thanks' section of the credits.

What a video games era we're leaving behind! Sam and Aaron Garbut are the two remaining names from early Rockstar as far as I know.

I hope he to join Leslie Benzies, now is turn to his brother and then the rest of the great game crew and maybe after year or two we will see  EVERYWHERƎ.

When it comes to writing, it's good to know that Ruper Humpheries and Michael Unsowrth will probably still be writing for R*. Until this changes, it's too early to say that the writing style would change or take a hit. I'd also not forget Lazlow and his large contribution to creating the in-game media and lore.

The Notorious MOB

My initial thoughts were that this is another sign that GTA VI must be far along into development. Would make sense that he would wait until then in order to have the game be his last big contribution at the company. The thing is it says he's been on an extended break since Spring 2019.. which was shortly after the release of RDR 2.

Seems strange that he would completely leave a company that's generating so much income rather than just take a step back into a less active role. I'm thinking it's probably ill health.

Oh and btw Dan knew he was gonna quit....the whole story of RDR2 is a metaphor to the R*eal life.

Sam probably did something to make this happen, I guess.

So we lost Leslie and Dan so who's next? Lazlow? This genuinely makes me concerned for the future of this franchise.

GTA VI story must be fully written at this point, but what about Online 2.0 and GTA VII? What if they want to scrap some concepts of the story of VI and rewrite them?

Man, its a good thing I never pre-ordered any new games and obviously it won't be now that I will start doing it, this news just reaffirms it.

Well, at least we can go back and play the games from the golden GTA era. We'll be playing Vice City when we're 70, showing our great grand children how we used to roll! 😂🏝

Watch him join forces with Benzies and turn... whatever he’s working on into a GTA-competitor. Maybe this whole thing is orchestrated. Maybe in a year or two, Sam will bail and all three will rejoin and make a new developer studio without the T2 overhead.

Who knows

it would certainly be a LOOOONG CON, but I'd definitely like that

With several other key people who've been there for long time still there I'm not too concerned at this point. It still sucks though, a huge creative loss to the company.

Now in retrospect ... is RDR2 R*'s story? Dutch is Benz, Arthur is Dan and John is Sam? Makes perfect sense after todays news.
