What the hell... That's weird. I wonder what were his motives behind that decision.

Also, what about Sam. Is he just staying there?

No clue! Doesn't seem to be much info so far, but I can't imagine he'd stay, unless the reason Dan is leaving is some kind of disagreement with Sam?

This was my first thought. Maybe he’s sick of milking online? That or they had different ideas on the future of GTA and the company in general.

Yeah I'm pretty concerned about VI and any games after it, at this point. Obviously, we don't know exactly how far along GTA VI is right now. But It'd suck for the writing and story to be adversely affected by this in any way.

Anyone who are sick of milking online gets my big respects. Even tho they don’t mean much.

I think it could be a disagreement with Take Two. Very sad news, I'll keep my expectations quite low for their next game.

If it is a disagreement with T2, I wouldn't be surpised to see them start a new company, and I would follow them wherever they go.

I'll just copy/paste what I said in a San Andreas sh*tposting group about it

Honestly good because Rockstar's been going downhill since V. Yea, Red Dead 2 was good but online had the same issues GTA online had. I'm not saying it would get better after their departure, but at this point, why not take the gamble?

People are so pessimistic.

Dan Houser's contribution to the GTA series and other Rockstar series is hugely important, but that doesn't mean Rockstar can't create great games once he leaves. This is similar to all the doomsayers after Leslie left and RDR2 turned out fine. In fact Leslie's situation was worse because unfortunately he departed Rockstar on a very bad note, in this case it sounds like Dan Houser either wants to do something different with his life or maybe he just wants an early retirement.

The big and influential names at Rockstar can't stay forever, they're all going to leave eventually. You can't hope for people like Dan Houser to stay forever, but you can hope for just as talented people to take their place once they leave.

It's very possible that despite the fact RDR2 has Dan's name in it as main writer, that he didn't do all of the work. RDR2's direction was by Rob Nelson, and the director is also a centre-piece to a story, so I think this is far from doom, but a very very big loss. There's other amazing people at Rockstar, just see RDR2, where a lot of the larger names in the credits were "newer" veterans of Rockstar. And it was a masterpiece.

I just wonder what were the motives behind this.

Watch him join forces with Benzies and turn... whatever he’s working on into a GTA-competitor. Maybe this whole thing is orchestrated. Maybe in a year or two, Sam will bail and all three will rejoin and make a new developer studio without the T2 overhead.

Who knows

Grotti Vigilante

I now genuinely worry for the future of Rockstar Games. As the Creative Director, Dan Houser has been behind many games, and I can only hope his successor will give us the same quality of work. With Benzies and Houser now gone though, I wouldn't be surprised if many are doubtful of a bright future.

Didnt the housers force him out?

Pretty interested to see if he's going to be moving onto other things (new studio?), or just retiring early. In any case, here's Roger Clark's tweet about it.

This lets me a little bit worried about the future of their games, on the narrative aspect of things. I mean Dan was mostly the mind behind the storylines of every single game. We shouldn't worry about GTA VI because that one must be already written down by now. I'm concerned about titles past VI, but who knows? Maybe that's what future games need, a new fresh mind to bring new wind to the narrative?

I'm really interested to know the motives behind this decision.

Dan Houser was the figure head of GTA. Sad to see, oddly enough I just recently finished playing the first GTA all the way through. Hopefully he creates a new studio instead of retiring, but can't blame him if he does. What's left to prove?

The point I was making was the ‘force out’ was a planned scheme between the brothers Houser and Benzies. Have him leave, but announce it as him being forced out. Have him launch a frivolous lawsuit with small-time lawyers to make it seem believable. Then Dan leaves. Then Sam leaves. They join forces, and nobody asks questions. All to cut TakeTwo out of it without any legal issues.

i don’t know, just pissing in the wind

First thought: possibly wants to move into something like film/TV?

I'd suspect something like a breakdown in the relationship between Take Two and R* if Sam/both were out, but considering the trajectory of GTA/Red Dead these last two generations, I wouldn't be surprised to read a headline like "Former GTA lead announces _______ miniseries with Netflix" or something along those lines.

As for GTA VI, they've still got Rupert Humphries, Lazlow, and whoever's been doing the writing for things like the Casino Heist update (because IIRC, that wasn't Dan H.) - but it'll definitely be interesting to see how much the tone/style will change (my money is on 'not so much that anyone will really notice'...).

RIP GTA 7 since GTA 6 is probably already written.

This. GTA 6 is probably already written, and Sam is still there to possibly oversee Dan's vision come through.

But GTA 7? Yeah, I'm betting RDR2 and GTA 6 will be the last good games we get from Rockstar. Now it's going to be gimped singleplayer modes with a focus on multiplayer unless Sam can do something about it.

That would be great if happens (if it is true) Sam, Dan, Leslie, Garbut, Humphries and other creative people should leave (some left) that bureaucrats called Take Two Interactive. Take Two (including the idiot Zelnick) are ruining the game industry.
