Favourite/Favorite Guitar Solos

Recommended Posts

ilovebender.com

Guns N' Roses wrote a lot of great music and Slash was a driving force behind that; so I could so easily post Guns N' Roses and listen to Slash.

But...

I want to highlight imo an underrated stroke of genius guitar work/solo...

I forget exactly which guitarist recorded what on this album so this solo to me is by ? of Axl's Nu GN'R Guns N' Roses; and I like the work that that bought about; including this song's guitar solo which has an accompanying mix track of quotes.

This is the same song performed live.

This is not to say this is my favourite Guns N' Roses guitar solo, but it's one of them; and I feel, an unsung ditty with a genius I want to give recognition to.

What song's guitar solos do you like? Post them here.

Little Wing, a heritage, a song, a voice, such an amazing record.

It's also a song I'm learning atm, kinda.

Stands to reason that the first post here was a contribution by Buckethead, who would have been my pick for a solo. I'm not overly familiar (or keen) with his work with GNR but it's hard to deny that he works just as well in a formal band setting as he does working on his own. The man has an exhausting work ethic, and at his peak released over 100 albums in two years. It's hard to be a Buckethead fan because they aren't all zingers, but there's entire albums where the run time was just one big solo. I always viewed his music as a soundtrack to something that doesn't exist yet. When I was 16/17, I cut my teeth on his playing and I feel fortunate I became a fan at that time, because it was easily his most prolific and creative.

You'll have to pardon the needy title but this is a pretty good example of the man's talents.

Shortly after discovering Buckethead, my dad caught wind of the frankly autistic noodling and thought I'd like Frank Zappa. By his own admission, he wasn't a hardcore fan but the couple of records he'd heard he liked. He still had one in the attic, and I fell in love with Sheik Yerbouti. I did my own digging, and while the humour wasn't really my bag, I couldn't get enough of his attitude and his playing. I soon realised I was precisely the kind of fan he wouldn't like but that made me like him more.

This video showcases some of his more effortless solos. Admittedly they're not as good out of context but his playing is effortless and the tone is nigh-on perfect for me.

Other guitarists I enjoy the work of include Paul Gilbert, Mattias Eklundh, Prince, Randy Rhoads and Yngwie Malmsteen, but they all have some incredible solos that I can't be arsed to include for whatever reason.

Awful Waffle

putting aside the rest of this utterly face melting performance, the fill alone @ 1:30 by SRV is one of the greatest solo riffs ever plucked out of the cosmos, considering how he got from the beginning to the end of the scale.

probably helps when cocaine is pounding through your blood.

and beginning @ around 4 minutes, Terry Kath, for the win.

probably also with the assistance of some performance enhancing drugs.

More like a vocal solo simulating a guitar 3:43 to 4:08 and followed by a guitar solo, mindblowing.

High Hopes stands still as my most favourite solo ever. It's followed by Without Judgement by Death and The Sleep by Pantera. Other greats are Homage of Satan by Deicide, Icons of Evil by Vital Remains and some great solos from the first album of Necrophagist (Onset of Putrefaction).

I thought it was gonna be "Steppin' Out" by Joe Jackson for a second. I was thinking, that song doesn't have a guitar.

Still a good song by Cream. Definitely has a great guitar solo.

The awesome Richie Sambora.

Perhaps not the most complicated of solos, but for sheer balls-to-the-wall squeals, fretboard sliding and joy it totally floats my boat.

Can we talk about bassists and bass solos too? I'd be remiss not to mention the incredible Victor Wooten.

The intro of the song "Blood on the World's Hands" by Iron Maiden is one of my favorite bass solos.

There's good few solo sessions in this 28 minute rendition of Dazed and Confused, including a huge solo with the bow of a violin. So I linked just one part, where Jimmy does as good as shredding as anyone was doing '73, Jimmy being a pioneer/early shredder. It's much more sloppy than today's standards but I like that. Got to love these coked-up live performances. What I love most is that he's all the different sections. He breaks in to pure Funk after doing the shredding. If you like here different styles in one track, you'll hear it here. Lots of homage to Hendrix too who would died about 2-3 years prior. He even does this 50's rock and roll solo stuff. It's nice.

Here's the 50's rock and roll solo stuff in the middle of Whole Lotta Love....It's time stamped all ready for both videos.

Jimmy Page is a phenomenal player, regardless of how you feel about Led Zeppelin appropriating blues music. Everything just looked and sounded so natural, like he wasn't even trying. I don't know if there's any appreciation going around for microtonal electric guitar being played with a comb but... well...

It's instrumental so I'm going to cheat slightly and say the whole thing is a solo, but for those keeping score the solo of the solo starts at 1:55.

"Sheep" by Pink Floyd has one of the best outros I have ever heard, and that's because of it's wicked guitar solo. You can thank Mr. Gilmour for that.

If you want to skip to guitar solo:

Well that whole thing was just weird, but I liked it. :D

@gigSheep is one of my favourite Pink Floyd tracks. That solo bit is so majestic.

Robbie Krieger I think is often overlooked as one of the great guitarists. I don't think it was revolutionary in solos but it was to me. I remember being a teenager and frequenting this old pool hall in the centre of the city. We used to hang out there and play pool and play music in the jukebox.  The music was loud and it was around 2000 or 2001. Light My Fire was just one of those songs that you'd here every time you go. I just heard Manzereks roaring organ and followed by Krieger's guitar solo. I remember just being blown away. I loved tone of the guitar. The extra long solos. It's one of those solos where you just know ever note that's coming.

Animals as a whole is my favourite Pink Floyd album. Dogs & Sheep are my two favourite tracks from that album, as well as my favourites all 'round for Pink Floyd. Waters and the band did a great job at depicting Animal Farm into a 40 minute album.

Back at it again with Paul Gilbert and his amazing human capo. Take a look at that little finger. Ain't nothin' little about that thing.
