The Battlefront 2 situation was a bit more than fans of the game getting united, it was seen as the final straw in a years long mishandling of the Star Wars franchise by EA but the press picked up on it in an instant because it was a big pivotal moment for how microtransactions, P2W and in-game gambling are viewed, there were even rumours that Disney stepped in once they saw the word gambling getting thrown around. It had a pretty substantial impact on microtransactions thereafter inside and outside the industry, with developers becoming sh*t scared of lootboxes and with politicians calling for a ban on them or some form of regulated.

So RDO having a fundamentally broken system in their game (animals) which has gone unfixed for months is dwarfed in terms of scale when it comes to something like the BF2 scandal, but still, Rockstar's online portions of their games just don't have that same ability to draw eyes when it comes to stuff like this. It takes the Rockstar community far more effort to get something noticed than it does EA, Bethesda, Ubisoft, Activision Blizzard, etc. I don't really know why this is to be honest, as GTA V alone has sold more copies of games than many of their studios have sold games total, RDR2 is one of the best selling games of the generation (if not the best). In years gone by I'd put it down to the console crowd not being big on places like reddit but that's simply not true these days.

Oh don't get me wrong, I wasn't comparing the problems RDO has directly with the BF2 scandal, they're incomparable in terms of scale, it was just the most obvious time in recent memory where fan backlash was, at least a part of, the catalyst for change.

Obviously mainstream media, governments and Disney themselves getting involved are what ultimately forced the hand of EA, but the whole scandal started at fan level, and having one of the most upvoted Reddit posts ever can't have hurt the cause when it came to the issue being picked up by mainstream media outlets.

I'm as baffled as anyone when it comes to R* seemingly operating under the radar of even the gaming media, nevermind mainstream media. Even gaming YouTubers who love to be critical don't really seem to bother too much with R*.

Jim Sterling isn't shy of being hyper critical, or flogging a dead horse, but I think I've seen R* be the direct topic of a video of his maybe a handful of times within recent memory. The same goes for YongYea, he piled in on the the crunch controversy and I think he might have done something about the GTAO Casino update, but that's about all. I, and all of us I guess, could mention others, but it would be a similar tale.

Within the R* community it seems that after getting to a certain level, be that Twitter followers, YouTube subscribers or whatever, the the thirst for that follow or acknowledgement from R* really seems to kick in and most criticism seems to dry up in either the chase for R*s attention or because they are so grateful having received it.

@ALifeOfMisery  The only game that I can compare with this mess is Anthem! Where they have lack of loot. And that game have been on both Jim and YongYea! I'm just curious how much R* need to eff it up before they start to lose a big chunk of the player base?

Anthem, oof. Is there anyone left still playing that.

The comparison is there when it comes to core gameplay elements being broken and not getting fixed.

I think that the trump card R* hold when it comes to retaining their player base in both GTAO and RDO is that neither game has any credible competition or alternative. If you want the experience either game can provide, you have to play it.

That's honestly part of why I stuck with GTAO for so long.

Anthem was one of the biggest misses I've seen in a while. Something that could've been that just wasn't........(not even close to its potential).

Leftover Pizza

The only game I've played which is worse than RDO is Wildstar. And that's a good few years ago now. But even that game became better during its first 4 months.
I love RDO, but I'm not sure how much longer I can cope with the issues this game has.
