HDR Vs SDR

Despite the patch to rectify the HDR previously with the cinematic to game adjustments I have come to the realisation that this game just was not built with HDR in mind. Rockstar vision and look was based off an SDR presentation. I've only noted this with a recent fiddle around with display settings to find that sweet spot where colours and lighting all align. My conclusion is SDR is simply the best look even on my HDR TV. The colours pop, game is less washed out, details are more evident and there even seems to be some improvement in frame rate. Now I'm not saying that this is true to all of you. This is just an opinion from my own observations and is only anecdotal. I would just like to hear what you guys think. Does the game look better with HDR set to off or do your observations differ?

You are absolutely correct, I have played this game both on my QLED and an OLED tv and the result is pretty much the same no matter how much I fiddle with the HDR settings. The SDR sadly looks way better on RDR2 and this is the only game I have ever played and can say that. I love HDR, but HDR really just does not work properly for RDR2 and it is not a console or TV issue, it is a RDR2 issue.

I play X1X on a 4ktv, and find game looks sh*tty saturated crap with HDR turned OFF.

If I use HDR I don't find it too washed out. Is it a goid implementation if it? No. But in my experience nowhere near as awful as others find it. On the Ps4 however I would akways turn it off.

This appears to be a playstation/pro issue given the research I've done into this. I'm not terribly sure why though but it is the only game on PS4 Pro I have that when HDR is disabled it actually looks better

Not sure what other X1X users would say, may depend on TV though.

It's still not really HDR, but would not explain why it looks so awful when turned off. I think later patches improved it though.

I think your reasoning is quite correct. I have played the game not only on my pro but also on the XoneX on both a Qled and an Oled. To me the HDR was bad even on the XoneX albeit perhaps not as horrible as on the pro. Personally I prefer the SDR on both as I really dislike how HDR is (not) implemented in the game no matter the platform.

Completely agree and I would advise anyone to play this game with HDR off. I don't believe Rockstar made the game with HDR in mind and it shows

I'm playing on the Xbox One X and a 40" 4K Samsung TV and the HDR looks like cartoony mess, all the colours are way off. It's best to be played at SDR.

So, I was thinking about updating from version 1.0 to 1.16 only to experience the new Game Mode HDR. But maybe it is not worth it? What is the visual improvement, really? Is it the ''Real HDR experience''? I have to ask, because all the patches is like 15gb... and im not playing online either, so I got no use of the online content. According to Mr 4kupscaler the new hdr for rdr2 is great.

At the moment, I am playing with original, cinematic HDR on version 1.0. It makes the game look more photorealistic. When HDR is off, the game looks more like... a game.  Colors look oversatured, and the lightning is bland and boring. My game does not look washed out. Because cinematic mode increase brightness, I just manually decreased brightness on my TV, and now nights are darker and colors looks natural and not washed-out. I also set ''Dynamic Contrast'' on my TV to Medium, and it just makes the visuals pop with Cinematic mode on. The sky in night becomes darker while the stars gets brighter. There is no noticeable clipping or anything either. No way i'm going back to HDR OFF.

I originally hated the HDR because it didn’t  really do anything. Since they patched it though I think it looks great. Sunsets near lakes and ponds create amazing colors, and the grass is vibrant green. I agree that it was an afterthought though. PS4 Pro
