Why GTA IV Is not available to be purchased on steam?

Recommended Posts

OmarMohammed

So today when I went to steam, I wanted to see If Grand Theft Auto IV Is on sale or no, But surprisingly it's available to be purchased, Do you think Its an error?

EDIT: Rockstar Confirmed that Gta iv is no longer available to be purchased, Probably Moving to Rockstar Games Launcher.

Remember when they changed Vladivostok FM to have new songs due to licensing, but later added the original songs back? Maybe now they realized they made some mistake.

Either that or they're finally getting rid of that stupid G4WL.

Licensing issues I suppose.

Yeah, exactly! Ubisoft did exactly the same thing with Driver: San Francis... oh wait.

Oh no. Driver San Francisco is the best second person shooter for me. But let's not go off topic.

It is really weird that they removed the sale option from steam page. I hope they are working on removing GFWL. They are aware that they have problems with it, expecially now when they released their own launcher.

GTA IV has bigger problem than GFWL - performance.

I'm going with universetwisters and going to say some music licenses possibly expired and for legal reasons they've delisted the game from the store. I doubt their removing GFWL as it's been over 10 years and they've had plenty of time to remove it and they haven't so I can't see them doing it now.

As long as you've purchased it, it'll stay in your library.

If steam codes / keys exist for this game, I think they could still be activated but not 100% sure.

It is included in the steam package.

Probably down to the fact that the game doesn't even run for some people.

You have to manually delete the Paul.dll which is part of the Securom/G4WL drm, probably also the reason it hasn't made it to the R* Launcher.

unlikely to be music licensing because they didn't pull the game when the last round of licenses expired, also it's still for sale on PSN and XBL for the consoles.

my guess is instability and drm reasons rather than music licensing.

I only have GTA EFLC So I don't really have it.

Imagine if they announced GTA IV coming to the Rockstar Launcher thingy for double the price than it was on Steam, and they just removed the Steam version temporarelly so people would spend more money with them again.

If they fix performance, bring back all delete songs. Maybe tweaking visual...

I say why not...

Oh wait, we are talking about rockstar...Nothing happens.

No. That used to be the broken ass social club login on older versions, now it only tells you to go the xbox website to make an account or something.

You can still buy EFLC on Steam right now, so it’s very likely that R* just ran out of GFWL activation keys for Vanilla IV and disabled purchases until they can get more codes from Microsoft. (Unlike Steam keys, GWFL keys can’t be automatically generated, IIRC.)

It’s happened once or twice with IV in the past.

The tracking of stats was tied to GameSpy’s servers, which were taken down a few years ago. Because of that, many Social Club features for pre-GTA V games no longer work.

Oh sh*t I forgot Gamespy had the servers for all our stats and stuff. I surprised R* didnt get those machines just to keep our stats tied up. man that sucks. I wanted to see my stats for IV.  Thanks for the reply though.

Looks like we have an answer, well sort of: https://www.theverge.com/2020/1/13/21063810/gta4-steam-games-for-windows-live-pc-gaming-key-generation

Quote

“Grand Theft Auto IV was originally created for the Games For Windows Live platform,” a spokesperson from Rockstar told The Verge. “With Microsoft no longer supporting Games For Windows Live, it is no longer possible to generate the additional keys needed to continue selling the current version of the game. We are looking at other options for distributing GTAIV for PC and will share more information as soon as we can."

In that case if it's speculated that IV is going to R*'s launcher then I wonder what'll happen to the Steam GTA IV Playerbase. I sincerely hope Rockstar isn't seriously using this as a chance to move people over to the R* launcher and forget about everyone else.

If other companies can patch out the dead GFWL service and still keep the game running without any additional bullsh*t then I don't see why Rockstar can't do the same. To be honest while I'm here, I don't need a launcher as my steam library is organised and I know exactly what game I'm going for and  it just takes a little longer getting into the game and would later become a hassle & annoyance unless there's some way you can block the launcher from starting up when you launch a R* game that's part of said launcher.

Yes said game is over 10 years old now (Time sure goes fast?) and I didn't expect them to be pulling this because of GFWL but here we are and their doing just that, except maybe possibly just using this as an excuse to move it over to the R* launcher but we'll see.

I've got the old firmware on my steam copy of IV that removes GFWL and when you launch IV through steam pops up the old social club launcher and after you click play that's it so I don't know why I'm complaining but maybe it's because that while their removing GFWL, it's probably not the ideal outcome I'm hoping for but as I said I'll give it time and we'll see how it pans out.

For ten years there’s been a damn file you drop into your directory that disables GFWL and enables local saving. This is such a non-issue and if they really couldn’t figure it out for seven years it makes me wonder what the hell is going on in that sh*thole.

Christ Rockstar, it's been known GFWL wasn't long for this world for around 7 years now? Even 2K managed to patch it out of BioShock 2 six years ago.

This shows you how LAZY Rockstar can be, didn't bother with this sh*t when even Capcom removed it from RE5 6 years ago. It's 2020 FFS

They are not lazy, they just cannot direct additional resources to something that is really not in their financial and creative interest. They are working on 2 games + on some uannounced projects. It is a logistical nightmare for sure. The last they need is 12 year old game.

Yes they are lazy, smaller, poorer publishers removed that sh*t back in 2013 when it really finally died.

Don't give me that Rockstar is a small indie company, they are doing what they can! Same with broken port of RDR2 on PC over a year later!

They don't care about PC and they don't care about preserving their older games in good state.

Let me tell you something, it is easier to organize smaller team to do some work than large corporation with thousand of people.

There is high chance that all people at Rockstar are doing something. Now, they saw the issues appearing with GFWL. They need to find people who will work on removing it, and their tasks needs to be redirected to someone else. That is a time consuming action, expecially if they are working on GTA VI currently.
