Which game is the best to transition to after V?

Recommended Posts

I have only played GTA V fully through, but coming here soon I will be buying the complete collection as I want to play through all of the main titles in the series. Which one would you say to start with? I figured 3 because that is the start of the 3D games, or maybe SA because it's the same state as V, or IV because the graphics are pretty close to V? I dunno...

SA and IV would both be good choices. I have to give a personal recommendation for IV because playing it after V totally blew me away and I consider it the better game in almost every way (after previously thinking V was the best thing ever). But also just because it's the most similar controls/gameplay/level of technical advancement wise. If you're a fan of the quality story/characters/drama side of things, the dark/gritty/criminal side of things and/or particularly enjoy the advanced mechanics/gameplay/details etc of HD era I'd go for IV. And if you like it you can play The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony too.

SA would also be a good one because of the setting and because it shares some other similarities with V like a large amount of extra stuff (car/clothes/hair/weapon variety and customisation, parachuting and lots of side activities etc), countryside, quite a lot of lightheartedness and a story that is more epic/action based and over the top than dark and gritty crime drama for the most part. IV also has cool side activities but less of them (mostly sticks to crime based ones) and less of the customisation/variety. If you like lots and lots of extra stuff SA is good.

After that I'd recommend Vice City because it's also an amazing 3D era game, but might seem a bit small and basic coming straight to it from V.

I would probably go with IV. You will probably find it very constraining and dated in terms of the map size, handling and the graphics, so then going back to the old engine games will be less of a shock and more of a relief. Going straight to GTA 3 might feel like too much of a downgrade, which would ruin the experience.

probably vice city or san andreas

Transition, overlay, fillers goes to GTA1 a classic no sell-out gameplay from a solid story

that is unmatched and is still the gold standard edition.

@Rajaraja  GTA 1 is original-- release single player (limited edition) ?

I'll say GTA TBOGT. Out of all SP GTAs it shares the most features with this one imo.

True but imagine playing it before IV though. That's just wrong 😛

Oh it's worth mentioning: do you know about the different universes? In case you don't, I will explain. GTA III, VC, SA, Advance, LCS, and VCS all take place in the 3D universe while GTA IV, TLAD, TBOGT, EFLC, CTW, V, and Online all take place in the HD universe (But GTA online is weird and is unconfirmed if it's non cannon, a different timeline/universe or what). The HD universe is kind of a hard reboot to the 3D universe and anything that happends in one universe FOR THE MOST PART will not carry into the other universe what-so-ever. I say "FOR THE MOST PART" as there are weirdos such as Lazlo, and El Burro, (and to some extent Claude), and etc. who appear in different universes but with slightly altered personalities. However Rockstar likes to put a lot of Easter Eggs across different games and universes which usually are noncanon. Overall Rockstar didn't put too much thought in the different universes but they're there and will be the reason why no other protagonist before GTA IV will return (unless mentioned in a easter egg). Hope that made sense.

you got pretty good answers, you coulda said what you wanted tho, i mean

Still most holding up? Gta IV

Best gameplay? SA, EFLC, Online

Best Story? III, IV, TLAD

Smoothest? SA, LCS

Best physics? IV

IV and EFLC without a doubt. You must learn the storyline of these before you proceed to other GTAs, especially if you’ve only played V.

I think that you should play what I call the "Main Games", which are :

- Gta III

- Gta Vice City

- Gta San Andreas

- Gta IV

- Gta V

I would also consider LCS, VCS, and CTW as such, but that’s just me.

Easily GTA IV and then EFLC since it's the closest modern counterpart and takes place in the same universe. If you want to delve further into the past the next obvious choice would be Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, and if you're fine with that gameplay then go back and play GTA3 and Vice City, if you're still hungry for more then check out Liberty City Stories and Vice City Stories and that way you've covered all of the 3D universe.

Start with VCS, then VC, then SA, then LCS and then III (you can try GTA Advance too), then you can play Manhunt 1 and 2 and Bully since they are in 3D universe after the GTA 3. Then you can switch to HD universe by playing GTA IV and EFLC, then if you are interested, you can create your Online character, I am currently having fun with GTA Online.
