Targeting Priority

Recommended Posts

Bakkerbaard

There's some talk going in another topic nearby about killing NPC enemies as a way of helping out players.

While this is something I can get behind, I usually just don't for fear of targeting said random player and causing them to assume I'm there to piss up their party, which would be a reasonable assumption.

Now, I seem to remember GTA allowing you to set auto-aim priority. Something about NPCs, Strangers and just bloody every poor sap that walks into the line of fire.

RDR doesn't have something like that, does it?

On a side note: does just aiming at someone cause you to go red right away?

Just leave people alone if you're not attacking them, no one needs your help in this incredibly easy game.

If you want to see someone as friendly then posse up, that's all that RDO has for features in that regard.

If you or the other player is in defensive mode then you won't be able to accidentally auto-target them, and they can't auto-target you. This is pretty helpful in situations like, you are messing with their NPCs when they arrive at the scene, someone else is messing with NPCs from your mission, or you are both legitimately running the same hideout, camp defense or ambush.

If anyone starts trying to help me by killing NPCs that are part of my mission then I kill them too. I do missions for the fun of killing NPCs and the XP. I don't want other players stealing my kills or XP.

Not to me. To me it's unfriendly when people think they are helping. The game isn't hard work. I play it because it's fun. Do you think people are being friendly when they race ahead in story missions and kill all the enemies? Or if you buy a chocolate bar and someone else eats it for you to save you the trouble?

Ease up, dont take what i wrote to seriously pls.

I've tried to help a little in random missions that were ongoing right on my route somewhere, thinking it would be obvious I was knocking off some NPCs for them, and got shot at for my trouble, so now I circle around to avoid the area altogether.

I didn't try to loot any of them, just picked off a couple on my way by, never even got off my horse, then the other player chases me off, so it's not worth the bother.

It was the tanning fluid wagon resupply, so I figured a little assistance would be welcome, I know how easy it is to lose supplies with that wagon.

It can be frustrating solo.

Now I just head the other way.

^^ After a similar experience, I do the same.

Speaking of which--what exactly does Defensive mode do on the PC, since there's no auto-targeting to disable?

I mean never mind helping, sometimes I’ve killed NPC enemies from another player’s mission because I aggro’d them somehow and they were shooting at me.

All I know is, in the rare event that a player shoots at me or kills me for killing NPCs or preemptively attacks out of fear, they’re just starting a fight for no reason and making whatever job they’re doing more difficult on themselves when they would’ve been perfectly fine just continuing on like nothing happened.

I agree. It doesn't make sense to attack another player when you have something to defend. I will return fire at any NPCs shooting at me, and if you retaliate by manually targeting me then you and your horse, wagon, cargo, bounty or passenger are going to burn.

Added: How do warning shots work? I've seen notice that other players have fired a warning shot but I'm not sure how this is done.

I think it happens when you aim at another player and shoot up in the air, but I’m not entirely sure. I haven’t seen it since defensive mode was added, I guess since auto aim is removed with it.

^This. I am not sure why anyone would barge in to help anyway. I don't need help nor appreciate others getting in to my business, I treat others the same way.

Alright. Forget about it. I mean, I prefer no help myself, I get the fun of having your own gunfight, but damn. Killing a guy for being friendly?

I wasn't planning on white-knighting now or anytime soon, but I'm defenitely sticking to a hatflick and a f*ck-off now.

I think the point is that you shouldn't presume to know what others what. If you want to help them then ask first or join their posse. Don't just jump in and expect to get treated exactly how you want to be. What you call helping I call getting in the way.

Despite my overreaction we agree. So I guess I apologize.

I like the visuals of a guy jerking back with a bloodspurt from his head, I like that subtle little thing the reticule does when you kill an enemy, I like being able to feel like a badass lone gunslinger against NPC halfwits. And I dislike having to share that.

I steer clear of other players as much as possible anyway, but I was just wondering about the targeting.

I think it's "despite" instead of "in spite". Who knows, time will tell.

Pull out pistol, aim (don't have to aim at anything), press up on the d-pad (causes you to aim straight up), fire. Shows a message to everyone in range that you've fired a warning shot.

I usually slow down, and turn at a right angle away from their current course, hopefully indicating I'm giving them some extra room to go by and not coming for them.

It's worked pretty well so far.

I just had this experience last night. On my way to delivering a stolen wagon for Sean I happened to follow a road that was now in the midst of a moonshiner "kill the revenue agent" mission. So I was shooting the O' Driscoll boys who were chasing me and even though I took the wagon off road to avoid the agents they began firing on my wagon and killed me. When I spawned back in the player was having a hell of a time with the agents, hiding behind my wagon and getting pinned down, so I went in with my repeater and just took out as many of the agents as I could so I could get to my wagon. After the agents were dead the other player sent me a respectful bow after I tipped my hat and we went on our separate ways, him to loot his dead agents, and I actually was able to finish the Sean mission with less than a minute to spare. Personally if I have to help because of situations like that I will, but I put little trust in other players to offer help otherwise. Still if other players jump in to help me I always thank them because I appreciate the friendly gesture.

I would discourage it, mainly because of exp and loot. I blame this on Rockstar as this discourages cooperation specifically cause of that. Something rather stupid for any online game. Most MMO's always give exp and loot to everyone who participates in a kill but Rockstar is too stupid or too greedy to do that. Even when in a group (posse) with them.

My experience with targeting priority in this game is that I'm able to lock on to every tree, rock, passing cloud and colours of the wind before the target i'm actually aiming for.

Why in the ever loving f*ck would I want to be aiming at a carefree deer grazing on the horizon when a cougar is giving me free claw hugs and chewing on my ear

No don't change to the lasso now omg WHY

Everyone enjoys the game in their own way. There's no right or wrong. Why is wanting to shoot NPCs taking the game too seriously?

Target priority is pretty borked, especially when the targets are moving quick. Like when you have 3 or 4 targets moving your way, the game tends to lock on an idle target within gun range, instead of those closing in on you.

On the discussion about helping other players or not, just leave them alone. There are several reasons why players do these activities and one of them is loot, especially since FP and collectables can be looted from corpses, also as a daily challenge.
I don't want any help while I'm in a shootout with NPC's. And I especially hate when the "helping" player starts looting while I'm still shooting. You bet your ass you're gonna die when I notice you doing so, and I will.

The lone helper who shoots NPC's and leaves without looting is a rarity these days. I don't shoot those, though.

no I mean the opposite. If someone shoots NPCs, which are spawned by my mission, I dont get angry or mad.

Maybe they dont even know, that these are "my" npcs, because they spawn in the middle of nowhere...

Ok, if somebody is approching a shootout, which is already going on, just to loot the enemies, thats another story.

I'm neutral on the issue, really. I'd be happy to help if it was wanted, but usually steer clear of other players just to avoid any potential issues.

Other than the occasional "modders", my experience with PC players has been much better than when I was on the PS4. A day or so ago, a nearby player at Lagras was kind enough to leave me alone while I skinned some chickens, so I left several unskinned chickens for them (one of the Daily Challenges). They had no problem taking advantage of that. :)

Eh, I don't mind it. Just realize that if I'm being swarmed by enemy NPCs that you could get caught in the line of fire. Had someone just yesterday kill a few NPCs as I was being ambushed during a moonshining mission and I aimed at him but didn't shoot since I saw he was a player and he rode away. There was another time where I was being harassed on a trader delivery and I had someone help me fight off some red dots. That was much appreciated and was some actual needed help. He held them off just as I got to the delivery spot.

I personally believe the targeting in RDO should be set to limited for everyone. With that being said if I run into hostile NPC's I will usually always kill them if nobody is around. If they belong to another player's mission and they show up I'll let them loot. Now if you gun me down like a dog in the street for whatever reason I will destroy your product and mercilessly hunt you down until you quit or I get bored.

I have approached camp defend shootouts and found another player in the middle of it already but had to shoot the NPCs that were nearby because they started shooting me. After the shootout was done I left, hard to say who shot what and a dollar or two from looting is no big deal.

I've also been in a house rooting around for a collectible and an NPC from someone's bounty mission or something came barging in, so I shot and looted him.

That f*cker's mine, and ANY red dot that charges at me gets put down immediately, player or NPC alike.

If you're red from being in offensive mode or aggro for some reason and run at another player, don't get mad when you're shot down, there's not enough time to figure out who's who, people need to keep their distance if they don't want to get involved in some shooting.

I've blasted at a fair amount of red dot players, but stopped when their name appeared above them, they usually kept firing at me, but I just leave then, I have no beef with them, it's just a mistake and I'd rather not compound it by having a war flare up.

The worst delivery spot IMO is the Valentine train station.

There's a fast travel post right there, and there are always players near, too much potential for trouble.

I've had instances when other players got wrapped up in my delivery gunfight, and that's fine, I might miss a few bodies loot, but like I said, no biggy.
