GTA SA - Xbox One X

Recommended Posts

Midnight Hitman

Hey there. I have heard a lot of bad things regarding the GTA SA remaster for the Xbox 360, especially for the physical version.

I have recently bought the Xbox One X console and I think about buying the remaster for the One X digitally. I just want to experience SA again, and having achievements for the game is a dream coming true for me.

So here's the question: Is the game worth it for the Xbox One? Never played the "remaster" on the 360. I have heard rumors that it runs better on the One (X), and bugs occur less often. Is that true?

Thanks in advance.

Okay, thanks for your answer. So running the game digitally on an Xbox One (X) does not improve the experience at all, I guess?

i don’t believe it does, if you’re releasing such a messy mobile port on xbox one, i doubt you’re gonna update it. Yes you heard it right, it’s a port from mobile version. The best how you can know more is, check out xbox 360 version, then check out xbox one version. If it’s still that messy ungreatful stuff without any updates to fix the messed up gameplay, forget about it.

Oh i think i forgot to mention the broken helicopter sounds in bill’s thread.

Can't you nowadays just play the Original Xbox copy in emulator mode on the Xbox 1 X? I never heard if the constant crashing / bugs still happened on the Mobile port version if you play it on the Xbox 1. I'm interested to know how it might have been improved.

Yeah.. Has anybody here played it on the Xbox one (X)?

Idea: Since I still have my old Xbox 360 here, I could buy the original Xbox version of SA for low, so I'll have the "remastered" version on my Xbox One, and the original version on my Xbox 360.

Or will the 360 update the original game as well if I insert the disc?

It's just awful. Simple as that. There is no differnce from the 360 remaster port. Every distasteful bug that was seen on the 360 hopped on the Xbone release. Of course R* wouldn't tweak anything up. Don't bother putting in the original xbox SA version as it's just going to replace it with the remaster port. In general is the game really that damn bad? No not really but the constant bugs kinda ruin everything that made this gta known for. At least for many of us here in the SA section. I would say if you really want to give the remaster a shot give it a go especially if your looking foward to the achievements. Mabye you can ignore the many bugs and annoying radio skips, etc....In the end it's still SA but....There's isn't much good things I could say about this version other than it's actual game itself :/

I'm never going to understand why the PS3 version was never as buggy as the 360 port. Me and one of my old friends did a comparison long ago with other versions. And it seemed like the PS3 port was actually much more playable compared the the 360 port. In the end the true versions will always be the PS2, Xbox and PC. Oh and of course if you don't miss half of the legendary tracks R* cut out due to licensing issues then you won't have an issue playing this version :turn:

I really wish I could answer this as I used to frequently play my OG xbox version on the 360 back in the day before I switched back to my original PS2 copy. Honestly give it shot. If you already have the game emulated on the 360 you could mabye disconnect from the internet and it might play the original XBOX version. Just a idea I thought of.

I dont understand the hate. I play this on xbox one and it runs perfectly. Near the end and havent run into hardly any bugs..

Its worth buying I promise. The checkpoints and autosaves are perfect. Who cares about missing some songs on the radio.. Play your own music if you have to

Thank you very much for you answers, you helped me a lot. I'm able to buy a used OG XBOX SA copy in great shape for 10 bucks, so I can play the "remaster" on Xbox One and collect the achievements on the one hand, and on the other hand I can play the OG version on my 360 (the 360 won't download an update, you're able to play the OG version via backwards-compatibility, did some research yesterday). So I won't waste any money on a version that might be butchered.

@Pandrew9287

Interesting, can you go into detail? There seem to be a lot of bugs regarding sound, graphics and so on. Have you encountered one of them?

None at all. The game runs smooth, looks decent, never had any problems with the mechanics. Sometimes, rarely, the framerate will dip but that never lasts long. I just got the game last month, never played it before so i have nothing to compare it too, but its quickly becoming my favorite game. It truly is a masterpiece.

Great to see that you like SA, it truly is a masterpiece.

One major let-down about the remaster is the circumstance that there are many props and details missing on the map, especially in the countryside, like grass, bushes, crops, cacti in the desert, the heat-haze effect, and so on. Everything looks kinda flat. The graphics are also way too shiny as it seems. I would recommend you to play the game again on PC or another console after you have finished it, I think it will be worth it due to the better atmosphere. Don't want to ruin your experience with that, I just want to give you the advice to think about another playthrough with the original version. :)

But as I said before, glad you like the game.

Oh absolutely. This will be a game I'll replay time and again. And thats rare considering I was never that much into games until gta 5. After SA I want to give VC a go. I downloaded the ios version and just started playing it on my andriod last night at work. I'm hooked already lol

The graphics being outdated isnt an issue for me as I grew up in the ps1 era. I thought gta 5 was an amazing game but playing through these older gta titles really have me thinking about how down hill it went. Taxi, ambulance, vigilante and burglary missions replaced with tennis golf and yoga? I hope gta gets back to its roots in gta 6.

I wasn't talking about the graphics, I was talking about the details on the map. The remaster you are playing is missing lots of details on the map (like I said in my post), especially foliage/grass, many effects like the heat/haze effect, and so on. The PS2, Xbox1 and PC versions are basically the best versions of this game with all the map-details and music. The Xbox One version on the other hand is an iOS port with less details. ;)

Therefore I want to give you the advice to get the original PC version (or Xbox or PS2 version) for low for your next playthrough. :)

If I'm able to I will. Even without the attention to detail the game is just endless and enhanced visuals, while not too important to me, would just be the cherry on top.

If thats all in missing out on by playing the xbox one version, im not too upset :)

Yes it's still there. That annoying crap has been there since the mobile version came out. It's the same version ported, same bugs, etc...I just could never get passed all these issues in the remaster ports. If you want to call it that since it's simply ported from mobile release. I'd take III's and VC's ports anyday over SA's if I were to choose between them. When it comes to console versions obviously I perfer my original PS2 v1 copy that's hard to find these days...(errmm can be found on ebay though, lol.) But I still use my 360 version for any good backups.

So now I have the old original Xbox version. I have played the first few missions on Xbox One (remastered version) and the original game on the Xbox 360. I'm already amazed how much better the old version looks, the remastered version seriously lacks tons of details and effects. This shows how much potential there was for a remaster, but R* decided to port the watered-down mobile version.

Still  having fun with the remaster, though. Have not seen any bugs and glitches so far. The non-existent surround-sound sucks like hell with headphones, though.

Wait wait....so this is the OG xbox original version right?? Damn...now that's good to hear I always thought since these stupid updates came out for SA on the Xbone came it out, it would replace the original version with the crappy HD port for the 360. I never fully paid attention to this cause having my original PS2 v1 what other better version could I possibly want. My stupid ass should have never lost my original XBOX version of SA...never found it but never bothered to look for it but again I had my PS2 copy. I used to play the hell out of the OG Xbox version on my 360 back in the day. I seriously might consider buying a sealed copy of SA's original Xbox version on Ebay. Just to have that version again. It definitely looks better graphical wise compared to the PS2. Except my nostalgia glasses   won't appreciate missing dark orange skies at 21:00 :turn: Been using the HD remaster port for any backups since then.

Just get six starts and go in a gun fight. It's always been a bit clunky. The auto aim still functions properly THANK F*CKIN GOODNESS. This version isn't so crap in the end but I'd pefer any other version over this one. Try shooting in the air with a MP5 or AK to see how CJ keeps shooting in a straight foward motion stupidly, lmao. There was so much unnecessary bugs that weren't freaking needed. How WarDrum f*cked the controls up who knows. And I will never understand why they removed the function when CJ commands his GSF homies to put hits and kill any pedestrian he targeted. Makes kicking it with homies kinda boring as I sometimes always command them to kill any nearby drug dealers, lol. But eh...not a game breaker for others.

Yes, on the Xbox 360, if you insert the OG Xbox disc of GTA SA, you will play the OG Xbox version. I had to download a very small update for the game, maybe due to the backwards compatibility, this is my first OG Xbox game on my 360. It works and looks fine!

It were only a few MB, maybe 15 or so. I guess that update kinda prepared the game or the console for backwards compatibility. Like I said, never played an OG Xbox game on my 360 before.

Yes. If your 360 has never played an original Xbox game the console updates itself for backwards  compatibility. Had this done with mine with Vice City years ago.

Some personal impressions regarding the "remaster" on Xbox One:

negative:

- yes, graphics are worse. They are not THAT bad, but worse than the original.

- lack of details - f.e. in the countryside the lack of grass and foliage is noticable and it kinda annoys me. it feels kinda flat.

- less effects (sun/lens flare effects are barely visible, no heat/haze-effect, less particle effects I think, no under-water-effect when diving, and other atmospheric details are lacking)

- shooting mechanics are awful in the remaster

- automatically climbing over fences/small walls. that really annoys me, and I haven't found an option to disable that

- game automatically loads the auto-save. if you have saved the game in your savehouse after an auto-save, you will have to manually load that save at the start of the game.

positive:

- it is still SA after all, and I still have fun with this version of the game

- checkpoints are useful (IF there are any, some "checkpoints" just restart the mission from the beginning)

- auto-save is a good thing (except that little criticism i have stated above)

Barely noticed any significant bugs so far, except the button prompts disappearing in "Life is a Beach"-mission which caused me to fail the mission. Worked at the second try, though.

All in all: I am glad I have purchased the ORIGINAL Xbox version from 2004, in this way I can both play the "remaster" and the OG version. Everyone who has a working Xbox 360 and an Xbox One console and thinking about getting the "remaster": Buy the original copy for the 360, that'd be the best and cheapest way to play two versions of this game.

The "remaster" is working fine for me so far (regarding bugs and glitches), but there are some major differences like the lack of most atmospheric effects, foliage, atrocious shooting mechanics and cut songs that make it a "worse" experience than the original game.

According to Wikipedia, if you insert the OG Xbox disc into an Xbone, you get the “remastered” version instead of what’s on the disc. Can anyone confirm?

That’s (unfortunately) correct. And that pisses me off because the og Xbox version has the full soundtrack, better controls, no dumb ass glitches/bugs like the radio skipping, etc.

Your better off getting an original version if you can. Imho, you can't experience SA the full way without playing the originals. They're pretty cheap to find on Ebay as it's near impossible finding a copy anywhere these days in stores besides the HD remaster ports for both the PS3 and 360. You'll get lucky ass hell if you find an original PS2 V1. or an original Xbox port in some flea markets these days. Online is the go to place to find hidden gems like these. Just got VC's original Xbox port to play on my 360 recently. Next is the one and only king which is SA. Always was unique since graphics were a bit better compared to the PS2 version.

I'm mean let me honest here...I can't be playing SA and having a 6 start wanted level in LV's desert areas hitting a sh*t tone of rocks and cactus while with my homies shoot back at any cops while playing "You dropped a bomb on me by the gap band Or I don't give a f*ck by the legend himself Tupac or Hell Raiser by Ozzy. I just can't....A damn shame what R* has done to this legendary piece in gaming but it's all old news by this point. I'll always just use my 360 remaster port for any other backups I deem necessary.

There is a way to remedy the lack of songs. Turn the radio off and make a YT playlist of the songs that are missing from the game, play them off of your laptop/phone while you drive. Not ideal but yeah.

One thing you can’t remedy is the lack of atmosphere on the remasters. The lighting in general goes much more for realism than ambience, so the surreal, exaggerated, early 90s pastel atmosphere gets lost. And while I haven’t seen this for myself, apparently a lot of grass sprites are gone.

If the remasters had just added checkpoints and not screwed with the rest of the game, I would recommend them over all other versions. That’s how frustrating the missions can be. As it stands, I would go for the PS4 version (better resolution and performance, but missing songs), or the Xbox version (better performance and probably draw distance, but worse controls thanks to the Black and White buttons). There is no perfect version of this game. Choose your sacrifice.

I have done it in the past but I find it such a hassle. Iike i said I don't play my remaster version of SA as much. I only use it for any backups while experimenting with any other glitches I happen to come across on. My main version that I use is my PS2 copy.

The 90's atmosphere has always been lost in furture ports. It's been removed for both original Xbox and PC when these versions released back in the day. The reasoning was that the PS2 had much less hardware compared to the Xbox and PC ports so R* simply changed weather cycle colors because it didn't need the orange hue and green and foggy sky's to hide the draw distance. The true 1990's feel to SA will always be the the original PS2 releases imo. The graphics may be a bit outdated from standars of today but the first version is so unique in capturing the early 90's feel to the hood life of Los Santos and it's real life counterpart Los Angeles. Almost like time traveling back to 90's LA. In my days of living in the projects back in my teen years in the Heights, of course we didn't have deep ass orange skies when the sun was about to go down, lol. But it just had that unique setting to it. If anything what R* got right in terms of the PS2 version is that I always remember the light greenish sort of bule-ish skies when I lived in LA back then. Beautiful. None of this can be seen in any other version of the game and honestly the HD remaster ports took a big'ol sh*t on what the original XBOX and PC versions had left of the 1990's atmosphere. I'm not sure if you can say the HD ports have a atmosphere. The f*cking issue here is that it's bright as hell and the color saturation is all over the goddamn place due to it being so damn high in the color levels compared the original versions which perfectly had grate color saturation.

In my honest opinion I would say either the original PS2 version or the original XBOX. I don't play SA on an original xbox as I don't have one not since 2006, lol but instead play it on the 360 (soon) when I get my copy from Ebay. And I do agree the original xbox controlls for SA when using an OG xbox controller has always been a bit difficult to use. If I was to choose between the two I would go with my PS2 copy mainly because atmosphere is just so unique. It's just my preference with SA. I'd still choose the original XBOX and PC versions over the HD remaster ports anyday. PS4 version of SA is grate also but man those missing songs!!! R* always trips to much on that licensing track sh*t. Taking my classical oldie James Brown and Gap Band jams??? Hell na, lmao. I would still enjoy the PS4 version either way as it's a grate emulation off of the PS2 version.
