Things about other GTA games that criticised you actually like

As a rule for this thread this can't include your favourite GTA(s) as it would probably be a bit too predictable and biased so it has to be from other GTA games that may not necessarily be your favourite, but things that it gets criticised for that you don't mind for whatever reason.

So I'll start..

GTA V:

-The flipping over mechanic. I've seen this being called unrealistic, but I've always thought it was very useful. Especially if you flip a nice car and want to retrieve it.  It's better than the car simply blowing up.

CTW:

-The anime style graphics. I think the game works better like this and it wouldn't have the same charm if it were 3D.

San Andreas:

-The lack of wildlife. Said it in a few threads, but the lack of wild life definitely adds to the lonely atmosphere of the countryside/desert.

GTA V

- Multi protagonist system. It wasn't implemented to the best of its ability maybe but I enjoyed getting the perspective of multiple characters in the story and I especially enjoyed this mechanic for free roaming, anytime I got bored with one character I'd switch to another and while the gameplay wasn't radically different, the fresh perspective made me feel like exploring the world more through the eyes of all protagonists

- Countryside. I think it's really scenic and I like the mountains. Really

GTA IV

-Lack of Countryside. May seem like its contradicting the previous point but the concrete jungle feel of Liberty City was a great change of pace from the sprawling environments of SA and V. It makes the map stand out more in my eyes since it was so urban focused as compared to the games before and after, and this makes the maps of all 3 games feel unique than it would have if even IV had a countryside, if that makes sense

TBOGT

- Light hearted tone of story. I mostly see this criticism from GTA IV/TLAD fans that it's the odd one in the trilogy due to this, but I think it complements the other two perfectly and a more light hearted game was what was needed to sign off the IV era after two serious games. I'd even say that the trilogy is better off with TBOGT than with another serious game.

(Vice City and San Andreas are my favourites so I didnt include them as per the rule)

Gta V:

-Franklin. i understand people say he’s underdeveloped and should have been in more missions however as a criminal i like that this guy is pretty serious and makes no nonsense on a job.

-Online. i had a good time with it, seriously only problem is single player being dead. other than that, i don’t see online as a bad thing.

Gta CTW:

-I liked the style of this one very much.

Gta VC:
-The city. seriously the hate it gets is hilarious, i think it’s good even tho i nostly choose the other gta games’.

LCS:

-Toni cipriani, underrated and great protagonist. he has some weird moments but still good.

SA:

-Gun sounds. many people say they are garbage, i don’t think they are the best ever but garbage? nah, they are alright

TBOGT:

-story and style. i don’t see anything bad about this, people consider it bad just because it’s different but i don’t.

GTA V:
-The radio wheel. I don't like the time slowing element of it and wish it could be turned off, but it is convenient to change stations quickly by a mouse swipe to whatever direction. At least on PC, it's possible to assign keys for "previous radio station" and "next radio station" functions too. The weapon wheel (to some extent) could be mentioned as well.

TBOGT:
-The colors or the timecycle. I think Liberty City looks beautiful even without a filter and still maintains its gritty aesthetics.

LCS:
-Not having more expensive soundtrack licenses (like in VC and SA). I still think including in-house made music and less known songs however gave it a unique identity similarly to GTA III.

VCS:
-Victor Vance as a protagonist. He was a bit of a hypocrite and not as charismatic as Tommy Vercetti, but I found him likeable nonetheless.

tidied up a bit, added LCS and VCS

GTA San Andreas:

  • Lack of wildlife. It was a big part of the countryside's and desert's mysteriousness.
  • San Fierro's branch of the story. Yeah, it involved some tedious missions, but on the other hand, I find about everything connected to the Loco Syndicate, Triads and Da Nang Boys to be among the most interesting parts of the story.

GTA IV:

  • Friend calls. They simply make the world feel far more alive and interactive, as opposed to the other GTA titles where it just felt like missions followed by missions. Not to mention how cool it is to be able to meet certain characters without the need to start a mission, or a new playthrough in case the story is completed. And another thing, they aren't nearly as annoying as they're made out to be.
  • Lack of countryside. Give me a city that's as well-developed as it can be and I'm all good. I'd rather to have it as the primary goal than having a countryside/desert at the expense of that.

GTA V - its 3 protagonist system. I think it was a pretty neat idea that made some mission designs better, or even possible at all. While character development suffered a bit, the way I see it is Rockstar's original plan was to make a storyline DLC, which could've adressed that issue.

I'm one of those.

As a stand alone game I really like TBOGT. I don't even have a problem with its light hearted tone necessarily and I enjoy the night life atmosphere it brought, but I still don't think it gels with GTA IV as good as TLAD. IMO it should've been a spin off with no ties to GTA IV and TLAD.

Gameplay wise there's very little to fault since it still retains GTA IV's great gameplay, but I don't know. It just feels like one those third movies in a franchise and tries to shakes things up after the previous two have set the trend. On one hand it feels like it wants to be different, but on the other it feels like it still wants to be part of the GTA IV party (if you get me). Sometimes I've referred to it as a side project.

Probably my only real problem with TBOGT is that it introduced the scoring system else I think it's a great addition to the IV trio. But then I also didn't think Godfather 3 was bad so...

GTAV's formula one handling. It still hate the snapping and the lack of abs for most cars, but the driving is much more relaxing and responsive to use.

Grand Theft Auto V: Having an ability to drink alcohol at house. It's very immersive.

I always enjoy to drink some alcohol after heavy shootouts.

Sleepwalking

GTA SA

Wildfire as other people already stated, empy forest are more creepy.

GTA IV

Friendship system, girlfriends, perks. It made game more alive

GTA V

3 Protagonist system, i loved it. Increased the depth of the game.

Cops, they are more smart and challenging.

Car Driving System, this is not a drive simulator. I think people wants a realistic driving system should try BeamNG instead of GTA.

Except for the machine-gun the weapons' sounds in GTA San Andreas don't bother me. They're for sure much less enjoyable than in Tomb Raider 2 or Half-Life but still I'm OK with them.

They're the weakest in the three dimensional games in my opinion, but looking at the bright side, they're at least nostalgic to me. But otherwise, I prefer the gun sounds in the other titles.

I hate how in GTA VCS, just right after taking over or defending an empire from the Sharks, just about 5 seconds those bastards attack another. But nonetheless, VCS is one of top GTA games.

You missed the point of the thread's title actually. It's about things people criticize in GTA games (that aren't among your favorite GTA games, as OP states), but you like.

I agree with you by the way.

CJ.

He's a fine character with some funny lines and fits the setting. Sure he's a bit inconsistent at times, especially when he buries that construction guy under cement but it's GTA so it's whatever.

Also, people that get annoyed that 3D era characters aren't in the HD universe. I actually think Rockstar were correct in doing that. I don't think they should be.
