Young Maylay dispute with Rockstar???

According to this Instagram post, which purportedly appears to be Young Maylay's (the voice of CJ from San Andreas), he is not at all involved with the production of GTA VI. Which isn't surprising to anyone.

What I found interesting, though, was what he said immediately afterwards -

"Fucc @Rockstargames period.. CJ will have to be voiced by another MF but not me IDGAF what yall heard"

He then goes off on several tangents in the comments, including threatening to knock out Rockstar employees, and stating that Rockstar is made up of "Culture Vultures MF's from London" who exploit other [people] for financial gain. I urge you to read the comments, it's pretty interesting.

Thoughts or anything to add?

Didn’t Franklin’s VA recently suggest they may bring him back? I’m reaching here, but maybe CJ is back in cameo form or something and they didn’t invite Maylay to voice him

He really did. It makes me wonder how much of that rant is from an actual dispute between Rockstar and Maylay versus him feeling frustrated at Rockstar from undercutting him from projects.

I see this as, in the case R* brings CJ back, Young Maylay will not be the one voicing him, doesn't mean that CJ will be back.

I don't know if he would be voicing any character in GTA 6,but if he does I doubt it will be CJ again, because of the separate universes thing (unless maybe they're doing a new game set in 3D universe, which I think is unlikely).

Sounds like a bunch of attention seeking BS. It's like Shawn Fonteno saying stuff about GTA VI recently, they'd just like to be in GTA again and if not talk about it to garner attention to help promote themselves.

Reminds me how Lay Riotta, Tommy's voice actor got in bad terms with Rockstar for payment disputes.

Or how Michael Hollick, Niko's voice actor got in bad terms with Rockstar for payment disputes.

Now Young Maylay, CJ's voice actor got in bad terms with Rockstar, possibly for payment disputes.

Seems like we have a pattern here.

They probably vastly underestimate how successful the games are going to be, and then when they see that kind of success they feel they should have had a larger slice of the pie. I don't blame them though. Niko's actor said something along those lines in this article though he was magnanimous about it and didnt blame R* as such

Relevant quote by him-

Quote

According to a New York Times article, Hollick was paid roughly USD 100,000 over 15 months for his voice acting and motion-capture work on GTA IV. He takes issue with the fact that he will not receive royalties or residuals as he would for work on television programmes, films, radio shows or albums.

"The first GTA IV trailer generated something like 40 million hits online, and that's my voice all over it, and I get nothing," Hollick said. "If that were a radio spot, I would have. Same thing for the TV ads."

Contracts between the actors' union and the entertainment industry make little or no provision for electronic media like videogames and the Internet.

"Obviously I'm incredibly thankful to Rockstar for the opportunity to be in this game when I was just a nobody, an unknown quantity," said Hollick.

"But it's tough, when you see Grand Theft Auto IV out there as the biggest thing going right now, when they're making hundreds of millions of dollars, and we don't see any of it.

"I don't blame Rockstar. I blame our union for not having the agreements in place to protect the creative people who drive the sales of these games."

also ngl Lay Riotta sounds just as badass

Yeah, that's the actual name of the guy that voices Tommy Velcetti in Gland Theft Auto: Vice City.

I think people's first faults are believing an actor who...

1) Voiced the least interesting protagonist in V

2) Hasn't had his acting career skyrocket after the release of V like in the case of Michael & Trevor's actors

3) Is still trying to piggyback on the success of V online because of the first two

As much as I don't like Rockstar in it's current state, it's hard not to take their side whenever "wah wah payment disputes" come up. I would love to get paid 100k just to sit in a recording booth and read lines into a microphone. That kind of money is nothing to actors like those but for me that money can pay my house off.

Can't see the original comment on his Instagram post (maybe he deleted it), but if true then he busta, straight busta.

All these sad fools should have hired better people to draft their contracts. Pay little pay twice.

Needless to say, that after all these losers are gone, people will remember one name - Big Smoke, baby!

After 15 years I still don't know who Young Maylay is. All I know is he voiced the worst protagonist in the series to date so no great loss. Here's the world's smallest violin for him.

Why can't they be like Claude's voice actor? That dude's never said a bad word about R*.

I would be sympathetic towards him if he explained the reason why he is pissed with R*, but in the moment he just comes out as a whiny child.

As fun as it is to mock people, you do have to wonder at what point do we blame Rockstar? We KNOW they don't advertise it as GTA during cast readings, etc, and people are sworn under NDA, and at this point we've nearly had every protagonist complain or disassociate themselves with Rockstar Games after. I mean who remembers stuff like Rockstar hiring gang members in prison to record lines for GTAV because "they want to be authentic" but it turned out because they also accepted a lot less money for their work, or the sh*t that happened in Brazil that nearly caused some side cast to be kidnapped? 😛

People who don't know R* apart from the fact that they make pretty games really shouldn't be defending them, sure I also wish YM shared more the details onto the situation with the company, but seeing people ass-kiss Rockstar when we don't have details from the other side is just silly. I mean, with comments like "R*'s people being disrespectful", I would hold my breath till more information comes out of it.

Pathetic. " Yo man, I'm da streetz, fucc yu corporate bich ", blah, blah. Besides being pathetic up to the point of vomiting, all that was completely unnecessary as well. Of course, unless he wanted some attention, a negative one that is, then he nailed it.

Seriously, he sounds like some angry teenager at best, nothing rebelious, nothing ' gangsta ' about his statement.

I know it isn't probably that hard to pull off that voice acting stuff when you are a professional actor, but I assume it's undoubtedly a bit trickier when you aren't and he did it pretty good in SA, pretty memorable stuff, if not epic in terms of acting - which was not needed in the first place anyway. All that makes me wonder how people can do and execute such cool things and appear generally ' cool ' while being complete and utter trash beneath?

Sure thing, Rockstar and especially T2 are nothing but profit maximizing, corporate pricks in silk suits, but that still doesn't change the fact this behaviour is childish and lame.

CJ will always be a cool guy for me, unlike this dude.

That was a full-blown, delete-your-account meltdown. I haven’t seen a middle-aged man that upset about the last 15 years since Wrath of Khan. I’m not seeing where he’s been denied the success he deserves. The issue that VG actors don’t get residuals like actors in almost everything else do is real but it is what it is.

The GTAV and RDR2 casts may have been managed better. Rockstar needs to deal smartly with the inevitable attention a hit game brings to the actors because keeping everybody happy keeps everybody happy. The RDR2 and GTAV actors do conventions and apparently are allowed to officially trade on their fame a bit more than their predecessors. Maylay did a GTA themed album and whether or not Rockstar supported it they allowed it and it exposed more people to his music. If he’s turned 40 and things aren’t where he wants in his life that’s up to him and being negative about Rockstar won’t help.

Obviously Rockstar somehow f*cked him, just like they did with Ray Liotta and Michael Hollick.

My issue with Maylay was that he was sh*tting all over his fans in the comments, Even with the simplest comment saying if he was okay or doing fine. Never bothered to reply to the thread. Reading other comments were enough. Not cool man....this kinda changes my view of him now tbh.

What can one expect from being a VA for a video game character? Everlasting fame? Yes. A big chunk from the cake? No.

I remember Sergei Bodrov in a interview, that he was surprised at how successful the GTA4 was, but he wasn't being bitter or remorseful that he hasn't accepted that offer. He just hasn't viewed games as a media where he will be remembered in.

Well maybe it his how the role impacts on auditory. A character in game can be a bigger proxy between viewer and actor than in a movie - and this afflicts the popularity of the said actor....

Hell, i wouldn't recognise Michael Hollick or Young Maylay on street if i met them.

Maybe they did something wrong.

Because i would definitely recognize Steven Ogg in public.

There's a lot of famous voice actors you would never recognize in real life due to them not being physical actors.

Its bullsh*t that R* would ask a voice actor to sign a contract without telling them what the product is, that's not a negotiation in good faith.

if the title is a multi-billion dollar product you bet my ass I'm asking for royalties.

What a way to start the year though.

Keanu Reeves did with Matrix one hell of a deal when he requested a percentage.

With VAs it's still a "take it or go" deal.

Not sure about the details, but something make me think that they earned more in this one job than me and you will earn in ten years.

If they are not happy they can take R* to court, they have enough money for that.

Yeah I'm willing to guess he feels like these white dudes from the UK screwed him over on payments considering the game sold over 22.5 million copies. But at the same time as a guy who only made 12,000 dollars last year I can't really be like what??!! Only 100,000 wow they screwed you dude that sh*t could buy my mom a new trailer and get us a new car. His career never blew up like dj quick, Snoop, Dr Dre or eazy e so he was lucky to do GTA.
