Enemies shooting when falling dead on the ground after stealth attack

So is there a way to prevent this from happening? Successfully got behind an enemy while in stealth, backstabbed with knife, but as he falls down the weapon fires and everyone get alerted.

Can we choose which attack we make? I notice sometimes it's a stab neck attack.

Do we need to attack them unarmed?

This was on Patrol Routes Guard prep btw, just happened and got on my nerves.

The same thing happened to me several times on the Silent and Sneaky approach of the heist after headshotting a guard. I have no idea how to get through this, either. It  appears to be happen randomly.

My question is why is this a thing, as this made impossible to go through the basement level completely stealthy.

You don't need to take out any guards in the Patrol Routes prep.  Just follow behind the guards that move until you find the car.

As far as knocking guards during the heist, sneak up behind them unarmed and hit B (on Xbox) to perform a silent takedown.  If they are moving, position yourself behind a corner they will walk by and take out your pistol.  When they get close (touching distance) lock on to them and melee them with your pistol.

For stealth approach use suppressed pistols and go for headshots.  Make sure there are no other guards around that will hear your shots.
