I work 10hr shifts, spend my free time with wife, kids, and resting. I game when I can which probably isn’t as much as the majority of users here. I read a little bit here and there but I don’t spend all day in the forums. It’s a lot simpler for me to post a question and check back later for a reply/response. That is one of the things a community/forum is intended for right?

Well yes. but 3 of the roles have been out for 3 months and Moonshiner just 2 days.

Moonshiner seems like it might be more than bounty, so far (bounty also gets partial gold from them, sometimes, though)

Once upgraded it might be a bunch more.

However, my moonshiner delivery just got me "disconnected from the rockstar server", in the middle of it. I assumed, as with trader, that stuff would just be gone. When I got back in the game, I still had 20/20 at the shack to deliver, so I was able to repeat the mission and succeed that time. So it is way faster than trader, to have a full shipment ready, with apparently no danger of losing it with a disconnect.

The same is true of a bounty mission, if disconnected "due to a fault in the rockstar servers" (all that time you spent is just "gone." )

As easy as it is to make so many gold bars, as well as cash (even with $500 trader missions sometimes getting disconnected, so no money), it doesn't really matter what you do. I mainly do trader, before this patch, and am up to 240 gold bars and $19,000 (well, spent some of that on moonshiner now ;) )  Moonshiner seems kind of fun, to me.

Just reached rank 10 on moonshiner, with good mash you get over 200$ per sale, so i hope getting even more on my way to rank 20, i vote for bountyhunter to be worst.

Bountyhunter defenitely feels the least profitable. Might be that in the time I'm waiting for my goods bar to fill at camp you could stamp out enough bountyhunts to make about the same amount, but I'm sure that's how Rockstar designed it anyway.

Seeing $30 pop up five times is less stimulating to my brain's pleasure centre than one $150 in the same time spent.

So that's my logic in designating Trader the most profitable.

Collector is indeed more profitable, but by the time you've scrounged up enough crap to make a collection (if we're talking pleasure centre stimuli, this is the way to go though), or enough singles, you could have done a bunch of trader sales.

Not to mention the time it takes to sell those singles, with "processing transaction".

Moonshiner is a pitifully poor earner for me so far. Still only rank 3 for the role though. It's easy to forget how little you were making when you first started with the other roles. I'll plough on with it and see how it pays when I get to the higher role ranks.

Collector > Moonshiner > Trader > BH to my knowledge. I heard Legendary Bounty's have a good, fixed pay now but I dunno how that works or it's 100% true.

Moonshiner when ranked up using the 3* recipes is good cash especially when you take into account it's like 56 minutes per batch with the upgrades. In terms of $/hr it just slightly edges Trader I believe. Not sure it's as co-op friendly as Trader though, not sure how much posse members will get from a strong Moonshine load.

Well with Trader, you have to factor in your time gathering materials also. With Moonshiner, it's just buy and wait.

Moonshiner is nowhere near as good money for posse members.  Seems to be worth about 25% of the leader’s payout as opposed to 50% for the Trader.

It is barely worth the time to help escort a moonshiner, whereas escorting a Trader is some of the best money in the game.

The answer is do all of them combined, however, if you are doing them individually this is roughly how much they pay per hour:

Moonshiner: ~ -$46 to ~$268.87. This depends on what your selling, if you've ran the missions, etc. This is the only role you can lose money on, but once you get it going, it's one of the most profitable. With a decent amount of action.

Collector: This one is tricky, but the average price of Collectibles is $12.50, so lets say you can find one every 2 minutes, that's roughly ~$375 an hour, and possibly double that if you were to sit on them until you have a full Collection. The profit goes down if you buy maps. And is completely dependent on your ability to find Collectibles. This role has no action what so ever. None.
Bounty Hunter: ~$1.30 Gold + ~$75-~$225 an hour depending on Bounty Difficulty. This role is mostly all action and probably the most straight forward and consistent with the pay.

Trader: ~$60 to ~$150 depending on sale size and how much Supplies you purchased. Takes between ~1-4 hours and is also dependent on animal spawns and your ability to hunt. The action mainly comes from hunting and some supply missions.

HOWEVER, and this is a big HOWEVER.

These roles should not be played exclusively, but together. I understand if your limited on gold, but the viewpoint should not to be to choose one over the other, but combine them all. Let me explain what I mean.

First, you first Role should be Collector as there are Collectibles EVERYWHERE and on quite a few enemies. This role you can do while doing all the other Roles.

Next would be to get the Bounty Hunter Role. This is because it is the only role that pays Gold and, you can find Collectibles and go hunting during your Bounty Missions.
After that would be Trader. One, you have to go through it to get the Moonshiner Roler, but it also has it's own benefits. By the time it is fully upgraded the profits will be ~300% more than selling to the Butcher.

Then go Moonshiner. Once set up the Moonshiner is something that you have to deal with once an in game day for 10-15 minutes at a time.

Then run them all together.

This is how I do it.
It's dark, I head back to camp.
Once there I clean my weapons, grab some ammo, a bowl of stew, and role a joint.
I off load the hunting wagon, if I got anything that day, and once it's morning I run a Supply mission for Cripps if needed.
Next, I head to the 'Shine Shack, grab a glass of shine, and do the mornings delivery. Finished with that I start a batch of strong Mash and depending on when the buyers swap, I pick the flavor.
Then, I head out hunting for the day. Either for animals, or for people.

If it's people, I head to the nearest Bounty Board and pick which ever one butters my biscuit. Along the way I'm keeping my eyes out for Collectibles and animals to hunt. Throw them in the wagon, then move on towards the target. If a player doesn't trigger the Bounty, I have 20 minutes to get there from when I grabbed it off the board. So you can take your time.
I'm there, shoot everybody, loot everybody, then I'm off.

When I drop off Bounty, I do so in a different town.

Grab a Bounty from there, then head to the next town, and so on.

Oh look fella, it's getting dark. Time to head back to camp and get ready for a new day.

On top of this, each role has items that help improve gameplay.
Bounty Hunter unlocks a perk that allows you to run/gallop in Eagle Eye/Dead Eye
Trader has a Stew Pot with infinite basic stew, and upgraded stews that last 3 in game days that give you all gold cores.
Collector has binoculars that use Eagle Eye and can allow you to spot Bounty Targets, Shine targets, Collectibles, etc, further than normal. And some items show up in the binocs that don't show up in the normal Eagle Eye.

Moonshiner has the Bar which, depending on Shine, will give you all Gold Bars and is an infinite supply.

moonshine so far

This is incorrect, fully running you can treat it like a passive business and make $197.50 in profit once a day. And all you have to spend is roughly 10-15 minutes of activities. Just sell it and buy new mash.
If you wanted to do just this role only and did everything to maximize profit you could make $268.87 an hour. That's more than the Trader, running normal Bounties, or Collectibles without using any outside help (i.e. the collector map).

Yeah, that makes sense ( to do them all collectively.)

For instance, the way I do Collector is mainly "in passing." I pick up collector junk while doing bounties, Trader stuff and now Moonshiner stuff; I either bump into them, or loot them.

Then when I'm at 10 or 12, or whatever, I'll pull out my fire tablet (happy Black Friday to me!) and look for the last couple of items with the interactive collector map.

Just doing the dailies, for the gold reward for that day, seems to be a good way to do several of them.

If I go to the shine shack, I can't resist also having the band play and dancing with them at least once! ;) I hope in the future they add more tunes/dances ;)

moon shiners is the worst.  pay for mash lose your batch ....pay again it dissappears biggest loss of time and money so far . And don't lose one bottle if you make it to the end of the bug gauntlet  and actually get to sell . I had a 20 bottle sale for 158 ... lost one bottle and only got 45% ...75 bucks . I just unlocked the copper still , but I'm not buying it cuz as soon as I hit level 16 and get the material satchel upgrade ..... I'm done with this trash role

Please provide a screenshot next time as I think you are either reading the numbers wrong, you are not accurate with how many bottles you actually broke, or you are grossly exaggerating your claims, or this is some strange random bug that only happens to certain people and you should probably tell Rockstar about. But they will want proof too, so...

I've done multiple dozens of sales where on each one I stopped before the drop off and purposely shot up the wagon to lose bottles. This way I was able to record what the price drop off is. 45% isn't one of those numbers...
Here is the accurate breakdown:
Crates Delivered vs. Value
Bottles/Value %
20/100%
19-11/75%
10-1/50%
0/0%

IF somehow, you did indeed make only 50% of your sale total, that means you broke somewhere between 11-19 bottles.

IF you only broke ONE bottle like you claimed, then you would of made 75% of your sale amount.
So let's do the math on this one.
If you sold it for $157.50 (Average Strength, Special Recipe)
And you only broke on bottle, then you should of made $118.13 = 157.50*0.75

If you sold it for $157.50 (Average Strength, Improved Recipe + 10% bonus)
And you only broke on bottle, then you should of made $119.11 = $158.81*0.7

obvioysly losing one bottle shoukd only make you lose 5% .... but like I said my delivery was for 158 dollars . Only one bottle broke ....and I got 75 bucks . Believe it or not . Doesn't matter, I'm just letting people know .. I've got 60k anyway and dont need to run this role ....and I won't .

Heh heh heh.

Apparently not.

IMO the least profitable is trader for all the effort (good to perfect skins etc) you have to donate to Cripps to get a decent sale payout. That's before you factor in other players and/or NPCs trying to destroy and steal your wagon.

Bounty the next least profitable (since I always do my business solo)

Then Collector (novelty wears off after maxed the Outlaw Pass 1. Riding around with the metal detector on horseback gets inconvenient and old real fast. Would be more practical to use if there was a way to equip this directly on your horse like the lantern.

Find the Moonshine to be my most profitable biz so far. You can sell 2 med end flavor moonshine batches game day and 1 high end batch every game day. The high quality moonshine can top 245+ RDO$ with long distance buyers. Only downside is cargo is fragile and hypo allergic to tumbleweeds and tufts of grass. The worst case of taking a loss on the delivery is if -- in that remote chance -- the NPC revenue agents decide to get hostile at the blockade. Instead of letting you pass peacefully. But other than that, I've made a good mint of money grinding moonshine over the trade wagon so far.

I also think the moonshiner is the most fun because it's so immersive. If you have Twitch, you get the upscale the most expensive copper still (improves shine production I think) AND the NPC bar band for free. And a good amount of other bonuses for your other business as well. It's always fun to take a break working my business and doing missions. Get dressed up at camp, eat one of Cripps 3 gold core stew, and then head to my  speakeasy. Go hang out in the bar downstairs, get trashed on my own swill, listen to some great music and watch the NPCs get roaring drunk. 😂  Always fun to play the cello when drunk. Nightlife DLC has arrived in RDR at long last 😄

  • 3 months later...

My more recent troubles are not "disconnected from the rockstar servers", so much as just trouble having a moonshine delivery LOAD or even getting in the shack AT ALL!

So I have the disconnection problem way less, but other problems (same with trader, with the camp going invisible (often upon returning with a resupply.) )

Based upon my recent experiences:

ONLY Collector. I can do that, with the Black Friday Sale Amazon Tablet sitting next to me (open to that great web page of locations), and just made loads of cash; Since I'm disconnected way LESS now, but have way MORE trouble with moonshiner/trader/bounty hunter, this makes the most sense. I like it the LEAST, when the other ones are working, but at least I can consistently do it.
