It's the same design as the Elite controller D-Pad. I like it but I don't use D-pads except for menu options.

I see the resemblance, but that doesn't mean it's a good dpad or anything like that.

It's still going to suck for any funcion that's not auxiliary such as browising menus.

Genuinely a little surprised that the new controller doesn't have paddles on the back tbh. There's rumours that the DualShock 5 will have them as standard, nothing concrete but they also do have the relatively cheap paddles attachment for the DS4 out right now. The new little details and the tech and all that are nice but seeing as the DS4 and Xbox One pad are basically the near universally used controllers these days, what they really needed to do was make paddles on the back standard IMO. So many games in recent years have ran into the problem of not having enough buttons which has resulted in awkward control schemes, it's become a genuine issue IMO. If they are only available through attachments or optional premium controllers they're still going to be a luxury for the next several years.

It surprised me as well. Paddles should definitely become a standard thing so this kinda disappoints me. But maybe Microsoft did this because they already have that expensive Elite controller?

I was hoping for the DS5 to have paddles but I’m not so sure now. Could be too expensive. Will they release two versions as well? Or will they just limit it to that attachment? I hope not cause that attachment doesn’t feel right to me, the controller is just too small for it.

Saw a video of the multi game resume being live demo'd. That is some seriously cool tech. I assume it's basically putting the game into hibernation by storing it in the drive, just like Windows does when you use hibernation for that, but utilising that for games is brilliant.

The dude goes through five games, swapping between each one in maybe 5-6 seconds and resuming at exactly where it left off. If it's anything like Windows hibernation, and it was also mentioned in the video, it'll work with a full shut down too as long as the Xbox remains connected to power.

That's some megaton quality of life stuff. Do wonder how much of that 1TB SSD is reserved for this stuff but assuming it's not crazy, it's well worth the trade off.

We have the auto resume for the last game played now.   It has always amazed me.  Being able to switch between a few games is going to be great.  Although, the pain of having to reload games will be even more painful than it is today...nothing worse than firing up the game you were playing yesterday only to have to wait a minute of load time.  We gave it so rough.

The last auto resume used 1 of the core processors to keep your state iirc.  I bet the new approach uses xCloud and the first minute of the game is streamed while the local copy loads.  Just a fun guess.

Nope. It saves the game state to the SSD, it can load it up pretty quick going by the live demo. I am guessing it's no different than using Hibernation mode on Windows, which puts your Windows state on your drive and fully powers down your PC and then once you wake it up it will load your Windows state back up, it takes about the same time as the Series X loaded these game if you have an SSD installed.

I am going to take a wild stab in the dark and say the Xbox team are pretty content with the news today lol.

I'm curious to see if there's a difference with the SSD speeds, over 2x as fast on the PS5.

Like the 1X was 120MB/s, so the Series X is 20x (40x compressed) as fast. Sounds like that's plenty fast

I think the pricing is going to determine which side will be the happiest in the end. After seeing those PS5 specs the PS5 has to be cheaper. I wonder if they are aiming for 399 again? Could Xbox match that and take the loss? I’m very curious.

I definitely think Sony are going for 399 again. It seemed like the perfect price before.

But, I think Xbox will reveal their second console at their alternate E3 event. And I don't think it will be that much less powerful than the PS5. Because if the leaks are true, this will be a digital-only box, without the Blu-Ray player. Who knows?

Either way, I'm just happy Sony pushed Xbox to get their act together and Xbox are being confident in their products. The buzz is good among fans at the moment. We needed it.

Phil Spencer has really turned the whole brand around tbh. At the end of the last generation the 360 was pretty much at  the top, with all the fans expecting a great next console. Then, they lose out on power and their messaging around the whole XB1 console was atrocious and heavily US focused. Sony came out shooting and basically openly mocked the Xbox One and kept their messaging all about the games. Landslide win for Sony. This time it feels like the tables have flipped again so far.

This is what Xbox have been doing for a few years now under Spencer as well, thrown away all the rubbish, kept it about the games. They've also routinely had strong E3 conferences while Sony's steadily got worse due to the lack of announcements and reveals. They've gotta be feeling pretty confident about Xbox going into the new generation for sure, I think they have a real ace up their sleeves potentially with Games Pass as well. Throw in a few months of Games Pass with the purchase of a new console and all of a sudden every PS4 owner would have an instant huge library of games to play day 1.

Does anyone know if the Series X will play my old original copies of Max Payne 1 & 2 and The Warriors? These games weren't made backwards compatible on 360 or One. So I probably can't expect it to play on the Series X? It just sounds like they are making backwards compatible for all games in their wording.

If it doesn't work on Xbox One, probably not.

As far as I understand it XSX BC is: All Xbox One games and all 360 and OG Xbox games currently playable on Xbox One through the BC programme. Whether or not they add more games to that we'll see, a lot of the old original versions of games are tricky due to licensing.

Curious.

A bit ago they announced no more BC games being added.

(Not the best but) quickest article I could find.

https://www.gamespew.com/2019/06/no-more-games-coming-to-xbox-one-backwards-compatibility-as-team-changes-focus/

I wonder if they have a whole different approach to BC moving forward?

I think we'll see more 360/BC games in future. At the time I think Spencer wanted the team to move to Series X to make sure all XB1 games work on it. That's my guess anywho.

Oh totally more BC in the future.  It just feels like they have stopped using the current emulator delivery and will be switching to another method.

Well they did say every OG/360/One game will get the benefits of the Velocity Architecture.

I'm sure that's either an improvement on the emulator or like you said, something different.

Great episode of Unlocked, Phil Spencer gives some insight about his reaction to PS5 and what they were thinking in 2016 when they were dreaming up the Series X.

Not yet. I think the price will be announced in the summer some time. I expect at their "E3" event. Spencer says he's been keeping a close eye on what people are speculating on the price and he says he's happy with Xbox's pricing,  so,hopefully there'll be no bad surprises

And Series X is scheduled to release this fall, regardless of the corona virus issues, which is good news.

It's the same design as the Elite controller D-Pad. I like it but I don't use D-pads except for menu options. I don't play Street Figher or anything like that so I'm not looking for anything more functional that what we've had so far.

Actually, it's not quite the same as the Elite d-pad - it's got that same 'dish' look, but with the current standard controller 'cross' raised up as well. Basically splits the difference between the two current One controllers.

I like it, myself - it winds up pretty close to the d-pad on the classic 360 controller, which was great for things like Arkham City (where the game effectively treated the diagonal segments as buttons in their own right).

What I'm not so hot about is the matte texture on the triggers/bumpers - and particularly the knobbles on the trigger faces, which ...ugh, no, that's a deal-breaker, right there... In an ideal world, the Series X update of the controller Design Labs would allow for current-style glossy triggers/bumpers as an alternative option, and maybe shorter thumbsticks - if I could build one with those options, but with the new share button and d-pad, that'd be near-perfect for me, in fact.

Yea they sound confident, so I'm expecting $500 which I think will be sellable due to the focus on power and not gimmicks (like Kinect and US focused features). If they get lower than that, oof.

Will the Xbox be expensive? I'm saving money for it

We don't know. But we're speculating it will be $499 or €499.

What we do have a good idea is that Phil Spencer has the full support of Microsoft CEO.

Quote

You have to set a price target at the beginning [of designing a console] for yourselves. [...] I feel good about the price we're going to be able to get to. I feel good about the price and performance capabilities of Xbox Series X. I feel incredibly good about the overall package.

We're definitely going to be keeping our eyes wide open as we continue toward launch. Looking at what the competition is doing, but we have a plan, and we feel very solid about our plan. Long ago, you and I sat in room and I said that I wanted to win, and you got frustrated with me for years about "Where is this winning plan?" I believe we have a plan that can win.

We're getting some incredible support from Microsoft. Satya Nadella, my boss, the CEO, Amy Hood the CFO -- they're very linked into what our plans our. We're going to make sure we stay agile on our pricing and that we have a good plan going into launch.

https://wccftech.com/microsoft-xbox-series-x-price-stay-agile-plan-that-can-win/

This gives me good hope. I think Microsoft and Xbox will want to get as many consoles in homes as possible. Selling consoles "at a loss" is still putting an Xbox market-place in people's homes.

I'm glad there's the support from the top brass. Xbox was set up as a relatively independent/autonomous outfit but I bet after red-ring of death and the 1 billion cost of that made development of Xbox One a bit stricter. But Spencer was able to convince Microsoft CEO Nadella that gaming is worth saving and Nadella was have said to go "all-in."

https://www.windowscentral.com/xbox-head-phil-spencer-told-microsoft-go-all-gaming-when-brand-was-threatened

EDIT:

Xbox reveal events coming next month.
