Jason
If you didn't know how big Acti Blizz is, especially Blizz, this infographic does a good job: Do note that Blizzard is basically entirely in-house (Q&A, localisation, remasters, support, eSports, publishing, etc etc etc) where as other studios out source much of that stuff, so that giant piece of the pie isn't entirely made up of game devs but yea Blizz is absolutely massive. Jason
It's crazy to think when you look at that graph that MS are about to nearly quadruple the size of Xbox Game Studios in terms of head count, there's absolutely no room for doubt when it comes to MS's confidence in gaming now, they are properly properly serious. I'm purely speculating but I can totally see them picking up another publisher not long after the Acti Blizz deal wraps too. Ubisoft just make a lot of sense to me given their regularity of new releases, which is perfect for Games Pass. If that ever happened that would make that infographic even more bonkers, because Blizzard's giant chunk of the pie is a result of roughly ~5000 employees. Ubisoft have f*cking 20,000. I agree with you. I think they will do at least one more publisher. If not that publisher, at least multiple studios, maybe Crystal Dynamics if they can be released from Square Enix. We never know what will happen in the future. There might just be a "right moment" when Ubisoft starts getting flack publicly for something like Activision/Blizzard and Bobby, and it's just time to sell. Microsoft, I'm sure will be waiting where with a chequebook. You can really see MS's plan is thinking long term like 10-15 years into the future. Well there you go, wouldn't be surprised if Phil's in there now convincing them that the company is worth it's most now, only going devalue in time. Imagine it was Microsoft that spread rumours about racism and sexual harrassment. I mean, even if it were true, they were the ones whistleblowing so they could get companies to sell so they could buy! Maybe they didn't want to sell so, MS starts digging for dirt and then gets a few people that have had bad experiences and then starts orchestrating a few social justice movements, devalue the company a bit and prime them for selling. Haha, sounds awfully conspiratorial but nothing is surprising anymore, really. Edited January 31 by Mister Pink 𝙼𝚄𝚂𝙸𝙲 𝙽𝙾𝙽 𝚂𝚃𝙾𝙿
Shadowfennekin
So Sony just bought Bungie. Obviously they don't own Halo, Bungie just works on the games. Mister Pink
I think given that Battlefield isn't doing well, and CoD is going to Xbox eventually, that Bungie might be directed to work on a new COD competitor - a new IP . I actually don't think it's a waste. Think of the potential of the future, not just what is done for the present. Bungie created and made 2 of the most successful online shooters in history. Acquiring them isn't no small feat. Sony can expand them have them working on something massive to leave the gap CoD will leave after it goes exclusively to Xbox. Jason
Destiny is still really popular but has sorta plateued and relies heavily on mtx so I'm sorta at odds with the acqusition for that reason, but Bungie's gameplay is still up there with the best so if they're given the license to go out and make a new shooter without the baggage of a Destiny style experience they'll no doubt find success. Jason
Microsoft got the CoD studios whose shooters always play great at least at the basic level, but they also have id Software who are one of the greats at making shooters that look and feel great to play. Can totally see them giving id the license to make some smaller scale shooter stuff for Games Pass. Which is really what I want more of tbh, I said it in the PS5 thread that I hope Bungie makes some story/co-op shooters and I'd love the same for id. More classic shooters and less multiplayer service stuff with SP tacked on. DexMacLeod and Failed Again

Mister Pink
Recently enough Xbox finally got a basic feature that PlayStation has had for years. You can to turn it on in settings. It's when you plug your headphones into your controller, it mutes the TV. Simple but very appreciated addition. Also, Phil Spencer is getting a Lifetime Achievement Award presented by Todd Howard at the DICE awards. https://www.videogameschronicle.com/news/todd-howard-to-present-phil-spencer-with-lifetime-achievement-award/ EDIT: You can also now turn the light off on your controller and Xbox. Very handy. I find lights on things distracting. I switched off the light on my controller. Saves battery and it doesn't distract when I'm playing in the dark. Jason
Guardians of the Galaxy is coming to Games Pass (both console and PC) this month. There's not a single type of gamer who I wouldn't recommend that game to, I absolutely adored my time with it, it's fantastic, so please play it because the more people who play it the higher the chance for that team to be able to create more Marvel games in that mould. It's single player with a great story, great performances, jaw-dropping visuals (raytracing mode on X) and it's jam packed with details and honestly just a whole lot of love. One of those games where you can feel the love that went into making it, there's a ton of little nods and easter eggs to classic comic stories but also MCU. It's an extremely refreshing game in a sea of AAA open worlds, service games, multiplayer, etc. DexMacLeod, Mister Pink and trip

Jason
2 hours ago, Mister Pink said: Not a superhero guy but through a game, that could be my 'in.' There will likely be a lot of easter eggs and stuff like logs and collectables that might not mean much to you, as they're basically all stuff from the comics or the MCU - a lot of it is from the comics in particular. That said, Guardians in both film and comic book form is more of a proper space opera than your typical superhero stuff. The clues in the name - saving the galaxy - but yea, it's a proper space adventure. I can't praise it enough tbh. It's 15-20 hours of linear bliss. There's some slight exploration to be done, for collectables, costumes and some other stuff but it's all done well, and while it's not at all an RPG and the ending is the same regardless of what you do, there's some choices along the way that do alter the journey in some major and minor ways. There's an absolute f*ck ton of dialogue as well, the main characters are almost always talking as you adventure through the zones to the point that you basically have to stop still and let them finish or you'll miss stuff by entering the next area a lot of the time. The combat starts off pretty basic and uninteresting but it does open up a bit once you get unlock more abilities and get used to it, the combat is probably the weakest part of the game but it's still very serviceable and fun once you get the hang of it. One of the last acts in the game is a bit of a slog because of it, mind you, just a sh*t ton of fights over and over. It's one of those games that launched carrying so much baggage (Avengers fallout, Deux Ex "died" for this, poor marketing) that people just wrote the game off entirely without trying it. I was very "meh'd" when it was announced but it ended up being my joint GoTY with It Takes Two. I just really hope it does well on GP and word of mouth picks up for it cause it'd be a big shame of the team behind it couldn't get another go at a game like this, we need games of this type in general more than ever in the AAA space. Kind of exactly what you said, carrying baggage from Avengers and poor marketing. As for the some of the Easter Eggs, If the game doesn't solely rely on them, I should enjoy the rest of the game for what it is. 9 hours ago, Jason said: I just really hope it does well on GP and word of mouth picks up for it cause it'd be a big shame of the team behind it couldn't get another go at a game like this, we need games of this type in general more than ever in the AAA space. This is actually a good use case from a developer or publisher's perspective for the benefits of Game Pass. It might get a second wind on there. If the reach is about 20m on GP, I'd like those odds. If 10% of people try it out that's another 2m added to the community. Another 2m that may also purchase some MTX content as well. But mostly to grow the community. Jason
The easter eggs are just for the fans really, they're all optional but I do recommend exploring for the costumes. But yea the marketing was so bad a lot of people including my self went from "meh" to "that actually looks really good" in the last week or two before launch because suddenly the trailers started making the game look good lol, the marketing really was just a mess. DEADWOODZ
Currently downloading GOTG on the pass, whopping 75gb. Unsure, but are you unable to hex edit games that are on the pass? Seriously doubtful. ***Sitting here thinking about it for too long*** Even in dev mode I'm not sure how anyone would go about launching a hex editor against an installed game. The application security within xbox is pretty tight. However, I did see an article where someone achieved elevated privileges on the file system but even then...still not sure it is possible and even if it is I can't imagine the process could be boiled down for use by the masses. I'm guessing basic checksums would stop any editing at the front. Mister Pink
I knew this generation under Phil Spencer would be great for Xbox. Even Todd Howard mentions in his speech to give Phil his Lifetime Achievement award at DICE tells a story how one employee that was leaving Microsoft to go work at Bethesda changed his mind on his move because he just found out Phil was being made the big boss man. He seems to have the loyal backing of employees there and his boss Satya Nadella. Anyway, Metacritic has revealed that Xbox was the top reviewed publisher of 2021, even breaking a record by having an 85% average score. Despite covid, it's been a cracking first 18 months for Xbox.
