Xbox: "Lockhart" (unconfirmed)

My understanding is that Xbox "Lockhart", the budget version of the next generation is on the cards as well as Xbox "Scarlett/Anaconda." There's debate online saying that the reason devs haven't reported seeing any Xbox dev kits is because Microsoft Xbox is behind schedule. I don't think quite believe this. I mean it's possible. I think Microsoft are being deliberately keeping their cards close to their chest. After-all, they've had relative success with the One X - the most powerful console. It's not quite the usual console refresh. I personally don't think production of a next gen console isn't behind schedule like others may think, although, not ruling it out as they are actually working on 2 consoles. It's apparently going to be disc-less so, Game Pass will be hugely beneficial as well as Xcloud.

Some news on Lockhart from GamesRadar

https://www.gamesradar.com/report-xbox-project-scarlett-sibling-console-lockhart-is-still-in-development/

Xbox One:

Xbox One had a disastrous start. DRM was kind of noble in theory but not consumer friendly at all. Basically the logic behind DRM was that Microsoft listened to devs complain that devs don't get any money from the second hand market. Outfits like GameStop would make a killing on used games and none of that money trickles back to devs. With this in mind, Microsoft thought it could attract the best developers to their platform by having a DRM system that favours developers. I don't think it was a greedy or shady move. Actually, it was quite clever in a sense but ultimately destroyed any chances of Xbox One competing with Playstation. Playstation, to their credit, pounced on this and really emphasized their commitment to user-friendliness and gaming first. While Xbox focused on Kinect and a family experience. Ironically, it was the opposite when it came to 360/PS3 with 360 being more affordable and PS3 targeting the home entertainment market.

Project Scarlett/Anaconda & Games

Xbox somewhat redeemed itself with Game Pass, which is really killing for value. There's a treasure trove of games to play. No, they're not all AAA exclusives but plenty of great games with all first-party Xbox games releasing on Game Pass, day one. This is brilliant. Getting Forza Horizon 4, Gears 5 etc is nice. Now some other new games coming to Game Pass like PES 2020.

With Xbox buying new game dev studios, we're going to see some more first party games next generation. I'm genuinely thinking Xbox are going to be a bit more aggressive this next generation. This current gen on Xbox was a bit poor, but Game Pass, backwards compatibility, made up for it.

Xbox also bought about 6 studios in 2018 and 2019. We wont see games until next gen but it's very exicting, particulary Xbox Studio's, The Initiative.

Alleged target specs.. Source: Games Radar/Dealer Gaming (leaving this hear for reference)

The Initiative

One of Microsoft's newest internal game studios, The Initiative, has heaps of big-name talent on staff. The company employs Christian Cantamessa, the writer and designer of Red Dead Redemption, as well as God of War producer Brian Westergaard. The Initiative also has veteran employees of Respawn, BioWare, and Naughty Dog among its ranks, while former Square Enix and Activision boss Darrell Gallagher is heading up the studio. Needless to say, Xbox fans--and the video game industry overall--are waiting to see what the studio might be cooking up.

Lockhart worries me a lot. Having a "budget" version of a next-gen console runs the risk of it holding games back, it'll be less next-gen and more Xbox One X / PS4 Pro 2. Either that or we'll see what has been happening for a little while now with the Pro/X which is that games seem to be optimised for those consoles and suffer (massively in some games) on base consoles.

I was originally onboard with a discless version of the next-gen Xbox but... not like this. I've thought MS were in a really strong position for next-gen primarily because of Games Pass but also because of the talk coming out of Microsoft around things like 1st party, their stance on multi-platform multiplayer and gaming in general (their PC support) and what they've said about xCloud but Lockhart, if the rumours are true, are a bit spooky.

I guess that the higher-end consoles (Scarlett/PS5) will be the baseline for multi-platform games, and downgraded ports will be made for the weaker console (Lockhart), otherwise what would be the point of MS releasing Scarlett if it wouldn't be the baseline for development? It'd be a waste of resources and processing power. The Witcher 3, as an example, was ported to the Switch, but it looks and runs inferiorly to the version on the higher-end consoles. Yes, this may bother some publishers like R* who lean toward perfectionism by trying to deliver the same experience across all platforms. However, this doesn't mean that they wouldn't choose the better consoles as a baseline for GTA 6 development, because it's most likely the case. It's up to the publisher, I guess.

Jabalous kind of  said it all ready but the next gen they're talking about scalability. It's more like PC gaming but in a console. I think the "holding games back" argument is flawed, all due respect to you. Because we don't know the specs. The budget console could be the one that competes directly with PS5 and "Anaconda" is the premium Xbox console. A bit like how now, currently One X holds the title of worlds most powerful console. I think Xbox want to hold that title next gen.

The "holding games back" argument is flawed as it operates under the assumption that the budget Xbox console is going to be significantly inferior to the base PS5. It maybe close but slightly inferior, like the Xbox One is to the PS4. They're saving money on no disc-drives. Customers with no disc-drives will also probably be purchasing Game Pass or Xcloud subscriptions which in turn should help boost profits. I think it's shrewd decision.

Out of curiosity, what changed your mind? And what is it about their stance on multi-platform multiplayer? What's wrong with PC support?

Fair, it's daft to make big assumptions without knowing the final specs. Personally I like the idea of a cheaper discless console, but I don't want that to come at at the cost of lower specs, which is one worry of mine too.

I could have phrased that a bit better, what I meant was all the things I said were positives for me but that the Lockhart rumours worry me a little. I love what they are doing what PC, cross platform (multiplayer and cross platform progression) and Games Pass. It's the first thing that's worried me a little about Xbox next-gen is basically what I was saying.

Ah.. I get you now. Sorry, if I misunderstood you.

Yeah, absolutely, we don't know the specs and I think it's good to exercise some healthy skepticism. PS4 really did a great job this gen. I don't think it's a perfect console, but it's a great one. Xbox is still trying to find it's way. We're coming in to Xbox's 4th generation. I'm more hopeful for this one under Phill Spencer. Playstation are coming in to their 5th generation consoles, so they have one generation of console experience up on Xbox. Every generation bar OG Xbox seems to have some controversy that holds it back.

The other day I watched a video of ex-Xbox head Peter Moore talk about RRoD on 360. It cost them about 1 billion dollars. Imagine. Imagine investing that 1 billion in just making a good console, rather than fixing faulty ones.

Interesting to see how the public will adopt it shorthand.

I would like to think it will be XSX and it's only 3 letters. I absolutely hated "Xbone." Obviously most people wrote it like that ironically but it's not shortened much and not funny enough for me to care.

But it's funny how boxy it actually is now. lol.

Why did they have to make it so bulky, I don't think I can fit it anywhere.

Really? I looks like the size of a medium to large blu-tooth speaker I mean, I don't think it's that big. Standing up, it's about the height of 3 controllers. Probably around 30cm. And if you turn it on it's side, it's about the with of 2 controllers.

I don't think I'll be having it upright, as, I'll prefer to put discs in horizontally. And it's shape will be a help to. One person commented that it's shape might have to do with helping it cool. I'm not sure how, but I like the sound of that! :D

The only thing worrying me is the green light. I hate any distracting lights such as the lights on the PS2 or any TV lights that distract from the screen. Hope we can turn it off.

Standing up it'd be too big. I wasn't sure if I could place it sideways, but if I can I'd have enough room for it I think.

Yeah, it's the only issue with drastic changes in design. It's the game of Tetris, reshuffling on the TV/Entertainment area. Thankfully, I got a generic TV table thing from Ikea. Actually, don't even think it's for a TV but I use it anyway.

It's the most basic design ever but my white Xbox One S looks nice on it.

Yay!

Gonna have to put it on the book shelf next to the TV.  Should look good there.

It looks clean but yea the shape of it is gonna cause issues for a lot of people when it comes to choosing where to put it. I'm guessing we'll see a lot of people putting it beside their TV stands/cabinets rather than inside it. The name is also... yea... Xbox SeX it is. MS aint good at picking names for their consoles these days, even without the memes it's still a weird name to call a homeconsole, "Series X", it's just weird.

It is exciting to see news starting to come out though.

I don't get how this device is going to be any different than a boxed set or speaker or anything rectangular thing they have in their living room. I don't recall when boxed sets came out that there was such panic over where people were going to store them. :D Just been reading so many comments about that. I think we'll be fine. Those that want one, will make space, no problem. When you spend 500 quid on a machine, you make it work.

The name, yeah, It is a bit weird, or was a bit weird at first but then I changed my mind.  I think it's the standard premium. One X is part of the "X" series. And the generation after next gen will have an "X" and that will be series X too. I think it's just like car models. Like the BMW 5 Series. It's been in existence since 1972 and it new iterations each "generation" come out.

My bet, and I just thought of this now, is that when Lockhart is revealed we might get real names for both. I think Series X is a generic term for the Xbox premium line of consoles. This is an awful suggestion but for example, it might be called the Xbox Two X or Xbox 2X. We don't know until we get a full reveal. Remember, it's really early to reveal the consoles. Normally it doesn't happen until E3.

I'm being a total fanboy  twat because this generation on Xbox was sluggish and a bit painful. X series been giving me hope!

So...we still don't know the ports and configuration?

Honest, I will be a bit disappointed if it doesn't have the HDMI in and out (like the One).   I'm really used to having it inline with my cable box.   Wife walks in, I hit the stupid xbox button on the controller and just nav to Oneguide.  Bam!  The game naturally pauses and she has the cable box remote to do whatever she needs with the tv.  Takes under a second.

So Phil Spencer said that there won't be any exclusives for XSX. So for example: Forza Horizon 6 or Halo 7 for XSX will also release on Xbox One.

Personally I like that. I have a PC that is about as powerful as an Xbox One X. So this means that all XSX games next-gen will definitely be playable on my system. I can imagine people not liking this though. After all, the XSX will be held back because of this.

Just the looks of it alone turns me off it looks just like a PC Tower, If I wanted a big bulky console i\d just stick with my desktop PC unless the picture is misleading and it's only a few inches tall

Some reason some gamer's prefer console over computers is the the compactness, looks and slimness and lightweightsness of the console itself that can fit in the small shelf underneth their TV with this the'll have to put it on the floor next to the entertainment center itself.

You're not getting the performance that this console will have if it's compacted like they have been. Gotta sacrifice that for the performance.

It's about as long as the Xbox One X, ~12inches or 30cm and 6 x 6 inches or ~16cm x ~16cm

I don't think that's even the top 5 reasons why people like consoles. Plus, it can be placed horizontally, so that should help placement issues.

It's not that big. Only 30cm's high. The shape of it means it should be a good fit. Not sure why people are making as big deal of that. I'm glad its like that because Spencer said he wants this thing to function first. It's not about fancy designs. It's about facilitating a machine that can keep cool and be powerful.

Also, I choose to console game because I have a lot of other important work to do on my PC. I'm studying right now as well as video editing, photo editing and music production. Adding/mixing the luxury hobby of gaming to that wouldn't be ideal.

As GTA3Rockstar said, compactness probably isn't in the top-5 reasons, although I used to have tourneys in a pub and throwing a console in a bag and plugging it in to a TV in a pub or even bringing your console around to a friends to play couch co-op is a huge benefit. But mostly for me, it's being able to lie down or slouch in my bed and play games on my Xbox - just plug and play. No faffing about, and in a space I have that is only for relaxing, resting and having fun.

Back on topic, I'm indifferent-to-positive about new Xbox exclusives being cross-generational. I don't think it will hold games back too much - if so, it's only for a 1-2 years. A lot of people wont upgrade for at least a year. Also, launch games are never really much to write home about. We start seeing the best titles come out from in the latter 3 quarter stages of the life cycle.  And I'm glad Xbox One users will still be able to have some experience of the new titles. Microsoft is being very consumer friendly.

In other news. Sony confirmed they wont be attending E3, again.

No offense but I don't think compactness is factored in when a kid is begging their parents for the current expense gaming device.

My wife is the last line for what goes in the living room.   Pretty easy to subtly stick a black rectangle near the tv and not offend.

I semi transitioned to console gaming after being master race only forever.   I was LTTP with getting a 360 towards the end of that cycle.   I've been staring into PCs as a career since the 90's...after however many years I realized how comfy my couch is.  I'm also less removed from the household when console gaming.  When I pc game I have to lock myself in my office away from my wife and dogs.

*honest to goodness answer.  I moved to 360 when EA stopped releasing Madden on PC.  A buddy of mine and I have been playing head to head madden since the birth of Madden MP.  He was already a 360 person so it was pretty easy for him to talk me into getting a 360.

I can't believe the size and shape of the future console is a topic of discussion.  Well...this kind of discussion.

If they turn the Xbox into a PC designed specifically for gaming, I'm in. At that point they don't need exclusives to have my support.

If it's the specs you mention then you're right it'll be nice and compact and sit nicely in the entertainment system.

I have no life so no place to lug my PC but even so it's a laptop that weighs 2 pounds so I can take it anywhere I want if I wished too.

I basically have my PC set up like a console for when I do play games instead of playing on a monitor, I stream it to my TV and use a wireless KB/M so I can play sitting on my couch instead of in the unconformable chair

The chance that it's true is slim but if it was and if PS5 didn't have that option, that right there would be DOA for them.

They have their own conference in Feb, but it's weird that they would still leave E3 - the biggest gaming convention.

:D I'm the same now. Gone are my teens and 20's

Sounds like a lovely set up! I'll eventually get around to PC gaming but when I have a more permanent place to live and when I'm more settled. Would love to get a wheel, pedals and gear stick.

@GTA3Rockstar: That's true. Sony weren't specific but I can see the value in having control over your own venue and conference. Looking forward to seeing what they produce.
