I wonder if Mexico was orginally planned to be the area they locked out until the epilogue. I could buy getting sniped by the invisible mexican army as I cross over the border to mexico, whereas it just makes no sense in New Austin. And obviously there would be no story missions there.

It would make less sense than John claiming to have never been to New Austin before, John had never been to Mexico before heading there to find Bill and Javier. There's something fishy, it's either leftover code from the beta, or left code for upcoming content.

If they hadn't had the place names in the hud data, I would have just assumed we were never supposed to go to mexico, just see it from across the river

Weird walking through where Chuparosa is supposed to be, knowing that its there but is just disabled

Here's a video where someone explores this area:

Tried to get in the area but doesn't seem to work anymore? when at that little canyon bit its like theres a invisible wall now preventing you from getting in the very corner, if you try force yourself in you instantly die and respawn at thumbleweed :(

That method has been patched out for a long time now. I think there's a new method but I'm not sure.

There a couple of pass out glitches that still work. One in a cave and one at Mantecca Falls in the Epilogue.

I brought this up a year ago. One of the early newspapers says something along the lines of “a conflict has broke out in Mexico. Commuting between countries is cut off and the army will shoot anyone who crosses”. That’s not an exact quote, but it basically says that.

Wonder if any NP plants can be found in the files? 🤨

I asked in the Beta thread abit ago. As far as anyone could find, no mention of the NP plants.

This makes me sad.... To think we could have had the entire RDR1 map in RDR2. Mexico was a masterpiece in RDR1. Hopefully we do get it in the future. Probably in the next gen versions if that happens. I think that would be cool.

If only they hadn't announced it so early, they could've had more time to finish Mexico and polish more without the pressure for a release date.

I hope they don't announce their next game 2 years before release

They were developing it for 8 years. Games that spend too much time in development are like overcooked dishes - you have to time it right and not fk it up in either way. For all we know it could've gotten scrapped or turned into something completely different (cough cough which maybe actually happened) because the devs weren't showing any results while the company needed a release.

I would've been totally happy waiting another year for Mexico. If this game had another year of development it would've benefited from it 100%.

Some of this stuff could just as easily have been ported from RDR1. Its existence doesn’t mean they were planning Mexico. In fact there is more evidence against that idea than there is for.

Oh yeah sure. Those higher quality LOD textures, the list of model names with +hidr variations, and the map region outlines for Mexico (the things RDR2 uses to highlight specific areas where you are wanted Dead or Alive) were most definitely ported from RDR1. Yes, absolutely.

Now, it gets a bit more interesting... All the names that have +hidr are high quality models/textures but they aren't there.

Those are the textures. The normal one is the low quality texture that is placed over the LOD when viewed from a distance. The +hidr are the textures you see when your up close.

Very nice find.

Just out of curiosity, have you been able to extract and open/play the audio rpf files with this rpf extractor? @VideoTech UK

Yes. Pretty much the same format GTA V uses. :)

Not really digged much though.

Ahh, okay. But were these extracted from the PS4 disc or the PC game files?

If they were extracted from the PC games files I'd love to have a play through with it, otherwise I'm assuming we're gonna have to wait for OpenIV support for RDR2 to be released?

Not on PC. PC is using Vorbis/Ogg for audio formats, whilst it is still an *.awc file, what's inside is completely different from the PS4 so that's gonna need a different process to play back. OpenIV are probably on it though.

I agree too that these were more than likely to be leftovers from RDRI, but it makes me wonder if a fan-based remake of RDR Mexico may be possible?

Sure, it won’t not be as polished as the rest of the game, but there are already tools out there that can rip models and textures out of RDR1, and with the recycling of New Austin/Mexico plants and props, and similar precedent in the GTA V community for fan maps, it could be possible in the future.

they actually tore the placeholder models out of the internal files??

the depraved, paranoid, sociopathic greed of Rockstar's executive division never ceases to amaze me.

I don't know whether to scream or to cry. so I guess I'll just laugh out loud in order to prevent me from doing either...

since the dawn of the very first GTA, the entire series has been such a welcoming supporter of the modding community, with such a huge community developing around it and sticking with it for decades. Rockstar provided the sandbox and the toys and allowed players to play with them. the replayability and longevity of GTA titles was always rooted in and made possible by its robust modding scene (NOT it's shallow multiplayer scene). you could fire up GTA 3 or Vice or San Andreas years later and still enjoy new and updated content. in many ways you can still enjoy them right now. their shelf-life is 10x greater than almost any other series of games thanks directly to the continued activity and devotion of modders and fans of the original sandbox.... none of whom would stick around if not for the sandbox or the toys existing in the first place.

today Rockstar provides the idea of a sandbox but has taken away all of the toys. when you ask for toys, Rockstar reminds you that you're a baby who can't handle and might choke on their toys. so you can't have any.

even the sandbox itself has become an illusion of freedom hidden behind an elaborate series of TIGHTLY CONTROLLED and EXTREMELY LINEAR scripted events...

hopefully the laughter will drown out the sound of my tears.

Interesting they actually bothered to remove the unused models.

It reminds me of the time that the PC social club had those weird GTA V place holder graphics that then got removed.
