So, my brother and I went to Best Buy's Magnolia store just to look around at their televisions and what not. Ended up looking at their receivers to see if they have any of the new series with HDMI 2.0 inputs- for full 4k support- and the sectioned employee comes over and see if we needed help. We asked him if he knows when they're going to get those receivers in stock; since some of them are coming out shortly. He basically cut my brother off and said "there won't be any." My brother then said, "they're already been coming out." Then not only that, but he said the receivers in stock now can do that; they can but not at 60fps(since 1.4 can do it but only at 30fps and some other lowered transfers) and he continued to say that it won't matter because it's all on the receiving component's part. Yea, duh but you need a receiver that can deliver it; let alone at a crappier rate. We left him with "I don't know about that, thanks" and walked off. lol

Basically, how can you employee someone who isn't knowledge in the newest technology, in the higher end section of Best Buy or train him for that matter? I hope he felt like a dipsh*t thinking he can sell us on the fact that 2.0 isn't coming out and 1.4 can deliver the same technology. I'm sure he googled it after we left.

IMO, while a company needs to train its employees up to a certain point, after that, it's up to that individual to continue to gain new knowledge by themselves.

If a employees like what they do, then they will take some of their spare time to do some research and be on the cutting edge of technology, so when

customers come to them, they're ready to answer whatever questions the customers have.

But those who are like that are very rare, most are just there to make a sale and could care less about whatever they're selling.

If your planning to go 4K, then not only will the receiver need to be HDMI 2.0, your HDTV also needs to support HDMI 2.0

If it's just HDMI 1.4, then it's time for a new HDTV. But some like Sony's 4K HDTV, it can change to HDMI 2.0 with a simple firmware update.

Here is a list from Wiki with HDTV that has HDMI 2.0 support, also do a bit more research to confirm on it. Can't just rely on that list to believe what it says is accurate.

So you can leave the PC on while on a vacation for a long time, and still not worry about it overheating. Damn. :D Gotta try it someday.

Just clean the dust with an air blower or something before leaving it on for long periods of time. It helps a lot

Just curious, were there any rumors about Intel adding Adaptive-Sync support to their iGPUs? I doubt it'd happen with Broadwell, but maybe Skylake?

I was thinking about getting a new cheap laptop, but I'm not in a hurry and Adaptive-Sync caught my eye, it really has a lot of potential benefits.

Granted the receivers coming out are new but when you almost interrupt us with "there won't be any" that just loses respect for that store and the employee. It's better to just say, "I'm not quite sure exactly" then an answer like that and then get taught by us. lol

Well yea, it would be dumb not to but I'm sure it'll be standard 2.0 in the 4k televisions. Just waiting on the new Vizio to come out; which I believe sometime after August.

Edit - Bro got an http://www.onkyousa.com/Products/model.php?m=TX-NR838&class=Receiver&source=prodClass on ebay, brand new for $800.

When you are having trouble getting continuity between a portable device (In this case Headphones) and it's Micro USB charger what is usually the culprit? The actual port on the device or the charging cable? This has happened to me several times on cell phones and if I changed the cable it would work for a little bit but just end up going back to having issues after only a few days. And now it is occurring with my Wireless headset. It registers the cable for about 5 seconds and then just abruptly stops charging. Should I buy a new charging cable or just not waste my time and get a new pair of headphones?

  • 2 weeks later...

My partner's dad is looking for a new laptop. He runs his own consultancy business so spends a lot of time flying around the world, so is looking for something circa 2kg or less. He isn't too fussy regarding spec but want to keep price fairly low; he's not a power user by any stretch of the imagination. Netbooks are probably too small and too slow, so a 13-14" screen is probably the sweet spot, in something like a low-end ultrabook. He's quite keen on an SSD but that would probably be aftermarket.

Ideas up to ~£450 welcomed!

I've been monkeying around with tails linux distro on a pen drive.

I say I do enjoy the anonymity if gives (to an extent) but trying to get it to do what I want is harder than I thought.

I'd like to turn it into my little personal OS on a flash drive on the go but I can't get things to save at all so far

I try to create a persistent volume but it gives me an error, I dunno if thats a bug (as it might be in my minor researching) or if I overlooked something.

Been searching on this problem, hadn't found a solution.

Anyone know why the audio on instagram videos are distorted? They play fine on the preview but once it uploads, it's in the slow low tone like so:

It seems to be an android thing, I'm on my Asus tablet 4.3 and can't find no solution whats so ever.

I'm planning on buying a new PC in a few months and apparently this video card doesn't have a VGA connector and the crappy LCD monitor that I have only has that as a display connector. Is there any downside to using an HDMI to VGA converter cable?

I'm going to be upgrading to a new HDD next month and I'd like to just clone my current drive and transfer literally everything to the new one. Obviously to do this I'm going to need software (I can't very well drag and drop 500GB worth of files, nor can I do so for my entire OS), and right now I'm looking at Acronis as the most likely candidate. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with cloning drives, and if so, what my best choice of software would be?

Seagate and I believe some of the other manufacturers do free-use versions of Acronis that basically verifies that you're running one of their HDDs and lets you clone freely if you are. They're fairly straightforward to use.

I'm running Windows 8.1 and I've run across an issue I haven't been able to find a solution to.

I want to switch the password input screen part of the lock screen.

Let me explain a little bit, there is a picture screen you get first when you lock you pc which is easy to change.

But after you hit enter or whatever it goes to a super bland solid color background and shows your account and has an area for you to input your password....That solid color password input screen is what I want to change.

More precisely I want to change it into a wallpaper of some sort.

I do know the color is tied to your personalization of colors on the system but a solid color across the screen looks horribly retarded.

Did VGA connectors become obsolete for modern video cards? Looking at some new video card specs seems to indicate that and the confusing thing is that monitors with VGA only connectivity are still being manufactured. The ones that have DVI or HDMI connectivity are significantly more expensive it seems.

So if I'm going to buy a new PC in the near future, what connectivity options should my monitor have in order to be compatible with newer video cards? Or are there any new video cards that have VGA connectors? I'd rather not "throw away" this old LCD monitor that I have (which is VGA only).

Just use a VGA-DVI adapter and you're good to go. Only Radeons R9-290 and R9-290X don't support such adapters and can't be connected to VGA monitors by any means.

Yeah. The word on the Internet is that VGA to DVI (or HDMI for that matter) passive adapters don't work because VGA is analog and DVI is digital. I suppose some modern video cards do work with passive adapters since apparently there is a market for them.

I should probably just get a monitor with DVI or HDMI and be done with it. I'm still not sure which connector is more common and what type (there are several types of DVI and HDMI connectors if I'm not mistaken).

DVI-I ports send both digital and analog signal and can be used with passive adapters. Pretty much every card comes with a single DVI-I port, aside from the Radeons mentioned above.

You can, yes. But unless you have something running on it like a dedicated server, there's not much point in it. It's not going to overheat at idle but it still burns power, which costs money.

Is it better to get a laptop with a quad core AMD CPU clocked at 1.9 Ghz or one with an Intel i3 or i5 with only two cores but with a slightly faster clock (e.g. 2.4 Ghz)? To me it seems that you would only get some advantage for applications that don't support multithreading since a single core is faster on the Intel CPUs, but the quad core CPU would be faster for software that does support it. Is this correct?

I'd post the two laptops in question because price and other components will factor in with which will be the best buy.

@Criѕtian: I'm not sure which AMD CPU are you talking about, but chances are it's not even a quad core. If it's based on the same architecture as desktop FX/APU CPUs, I wouldn't call it a true quad core, more like something between dual and quad core. And yeah, the single threaded performance will be quite pathetic either way.

I'd get the Intel i5, hands down. IMO, it runs cooler and better than AMD, even with less cores.

Getting a laptop was tempting because I want a new temporary PC until I get a proper desktop PC (so I can keep the laptop for other stuff), but it would just make more sense to get a desktop for the same amount of money. So I guess I'll do that instead.

Yes, it would make more sense, and the desktop PC can have better stuff for the same amount of money. You can always get the main components first (motherboard, processor, RAM, power supply, etc.) and, as you get more money, get the rest later.
