You cannot install 7 on top of XP. 7 will want to do a clean install. Frankly that is the best choice anyway. Even if you had Vista, which you can install 7 on top of, I would still suggest a clean install.

I understand that you are going to reinstall Firefox once you have 7 installed, but do you really want to lose all of your bookmarks and add-ons with their settings and be forced to recreate all of that again?.

The only thing you'll have to do is backup 1 folder. C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Mozilla

And then copy that folder back to C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\ and as long as it's the same version you'll be done and it'll look just like it did when you were on XP. 1 less thing you'll have to worry about getting back to the way you had it and liked it before.

Trust me you'll have enough other programs you'll have to do that with later on.

You'll need the drivers for the new OS, like I said you cannot 7 on top of XP it has to be clean.

Pentium 4 is actually worse, lol. Mainly because it's a single core CPU.

Also, this Athlon was most probably designed for an AM2 mobo, and lots of these mobos support AM3 CPUs (yep, even Phenoms II). Or is it Athlon 64 X2 for 939 socket?

No, it's a Socket AM2. Does this mean I can just get a 3.5+ GHz processor because it's compatible with it?

What motherboard does this PC have ? You can check it via CPU-Z app. As I said, most AM2 boards will support AM3 CPUs, but not all of them. Also most of these are limited to CPUs with TDP no higher than 95W and no more than four cores.

It doesn't say what specific model it is, probably because it came with the computer. It's a Dell Dimension E521.

Hmmm... okay. Well, it's hard to tell if your motherboard will support AM3 CPUs, couldn't find much info about it. Still, A64X2 is better than P4.

Is that Pentium 4 made for LGA775 socket, or s478? If the former, then you should be able to upgrade it to a Core 2 Duo. Again, this depends on the motherboard.

Started building my PC today and did a test boot with Processor, RAM and motherboard installed. I managed to get a POST beep from the speaker header and it went to BIOS so now I'm extremely happy the base components are working. However, before the POST beep there is another smaller beep and a red light comes on near where the MemOK! button on my Asus mobo is. The BIOS comes up so I assume everything is working correctly but is something wrong? I did have a bit of trouble fitting my single 1600MHz Corsair Vengeance 4GB stick in earlier but it turns out I was using the wrong DIMM slot and not pressing hard enough but it eventually went in.

If it's anything like my Crosshair, the light comes on to show you that current is being supplied to the motherboard. I only have one beep in my boot process though, but if it's a short one and it's POSTing I can't imagine that it's anything serious. Do you have multiple HDDs or optical drives? My old ASUS board double-beeped for a while and it turns out I'd plugged my BD-ROM drive into the SATA port, but not plugged it into the PSU.

For the test boot I had nothing but the CPU, Fan, RAM, Speaker Header, Power Switch, the ATX 24 pin cable and the CPU supplemental power plugged in. Along with a monitor and keyboard for on screen information and to access BIOS. I'm not using a GPU since the 3570k has HD 4000 graphics which are good enough for now. It could be because I have nothing else plugged in like you said.

Is there an expiration date for a windows 7 ultimate key? A friend of mine has an extra copy off windows and I don't need it until I build a PC which may be 2 years away and Windows 8 is a sh*tty annoying experience judging from the beta.

You'll likely get a beep from no HDD and no OD, and potentially from no GPU too.

If that's a genuine one then it wont expire. If its pirated, it is ought to expire.

Hope this helps

If an Internal Hard Drive beeps/makes similar noises when booting up a PC, is it faulty? I have used various different slots and cables for the Power and Data and always get the same thing. My USB HDD and Memory Stick seem to be recognized by the BIOS fine whilst the Internal HDD isn't.

Check if your chords are properply connected to your hardisk. Also, check the controller that connects your hardisk and motherboard is properly connected and has

not broken.

Definitely genuine.

Reason he has it is because his lil bro finishes school soon and they get a free code for windows 7 ultimate transferred from their school laptops.

Recently I have been having problems with a blue screen error, down you will have the reports from WhoCrashed software, I doubt it has anything to do with drivers since I didn't touched them in awhile.

crash dump file: C:\Windows\Minidump\090112-19125-01.dmp

This was probably caused by the following module: ntkrlstaforce.exe (nt+0x4687B)

Bugcheck code: 0xA (0x34, 0x2, 0x1, 0xFFFFFFFF84079108)

Error: IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

file path: C:\Windows\system32\ntkrlstaforce.exe

product: Microsoft® Windows® Operating System

company: Microsoft Corporation

description: NT Kernel & System

Bug check description: This indicates that Microsoft Windows or a kernel-mode driver accessed paged memory at DISPATCH_LEVEL or above.

This appears to be a typical software driver bug and is not likely to be caused by a hardware problem.

The crash took place in a standard Microsoft module. Your system configuration may be incorrect. Possibly this problem is caused by another driver on your system which cannot be identified at this time.

Punk-in-Drublic

I posted in the general chat thread by accident, but heres something I posted yesterday that probably belongs in this thread.

Hey, I'm looking into buying an external HD to store movies, TV shows and music on, I'm thinking of a TB one. I'm currently streaming media from PC downstairs to my xbox upstairs, which is a bit of a pain in the arse, so I'm after one that can connect to my xbox or my TV that has a USB port built in.

I'm looking to pay between £50 and £80.

Looking at those IRQL_NOT_LESS errors, I'd say you've got a bad stick of RAM. Download Memtest, get it on a bootable CD/USB and run a few passes- minimum of 3. That should tell you which stick is broken. Then just remove that one, run again and if you still get errors then it's a problem with the Motherboard.

ntkrlstaforce.exe doesn't seem to be an original Windows OS file. Try this:

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-...le-checker.html

It's a file/modified kernel designed to circumvent the RAM limitations in X86 machines, meaning you can theoretically run more than 3.25GB usable RAM on 32-bit Windows.

The problem is also caused if you had been running ten different programs at once. If the blue screen errors happen semi-frequently even when your are not running a ton of programs, then there is probably a problem in your Windows registry. Download and run a Registry Cleaner. Hope this helps.

Running Memtest didn't detected anything wrong, but I removed one of the sticks and it seems that did the trick, hope that was the problem.

Thanks for the help guys. icon14.gif

I think it might be hardware-related, not software. I don't think a reformat will fix it- though you could always just do a fresh Windows install and keep your data.

Bit stupid, why don't you just back the data up? or make a new partition and format that for your new Windows installation?

I've just finished ripping a TV series from my DVDs, and imported the files into my Windows Media Player (12) library. I decided to go back through and rename all 214 episodes, and update the information in the video tags, however, when I click 'Apply Changes to media' it just hangs at 0% and will not move no matter how long I leave the program (the last time I left it for 45 minutes.) What can I do so that I don't lose all the information I put in already?

All of my files names have been changed to match what I want the library to show, and I've changed the names twice already, I really don't want to lose all of my 'work' again, as it takes about an hour to type in all of the information.

EDIT:

Nevermind, apparently WMP was working, but not updating the progress bar. I restarted the Media Player and all is well.

My friend has D LINK DIR 615 router and 70% of the time, his Xbox 360 Slim won't connect first time (wirelessly). He has to test connection on the Xbox and then it'll work. All other wireless devices work fine. Any ideas?

I was gonna say check "read only".
