Random Technology Questions

I find it quite strange how technology progresses so quickly.

A few years ago, if you ever mentioned anything about overclocking RAM or something like purchasing RAM that came with heat sinks attached, people would tell you that you're an idiot or you're crazy.

It seemed the only thing that mattered was finding memory that matched what your motherboard needed, or perhaps I never really noticed that stuff back then. lol.gif

It's just been a long period of time since I've ever dealt with RAM I guess...

Doubt any of you can answer this question, but it happened to me again, My desktop display would select every single item after the top icon link, that means everything would open with one click when everything from top screen to the selected item is 'opened', One way around this is to RIGHT CLICK on your mouse, but the reasoning is more like a glitch, really.... it happens under normal, non suspicious use, and a reboot seems the only way to clear it, I had to reboot twice, however, and I opted to clear the battery and AC residual power and wait some seconds before booting the laptop again, I had this happen when showing a machine for sale and it died, the sale that is.... As it took me by surprise, and even with a reboot, the buyer assumed there was something wrong, that was a Dell Inspiron 1150 model, never had consistent problems with it.

Let me get this right....

You left click on an icon on the desktop at the top left and it would instead select everything?

So what happens if you select some other icon on the desktop?

Is this one of those computers you scavenge from the dumpster and "repair" it and was trying to sell it?

So I have an 8GB MicroSDHC memory card from my old Nokia 5800. Only thing is, it only works with that phone. When I plug it in other phones, nothing happens, and when I plug it in an SD adapter, still nothing. I tried it in a Nokia E63, and it came up with Type Password...and I don't know what the password is! And I don't have my 5800 anymore, so, is there a way that I can find the password or actually make it show up on my computer?

How much do you think a computer with a Pentium Dual Core e5200, 2GB DDR2 RAM, a GeForce 9600GT 1GB and a 1TB hard drive would be worth? Going to sell my old desktop but not sure how much its worth.

About £150 but if you sell it to an idiot and use buzzwords like OVERCLOCKED TRIPLE THE SPEED PROCESSOR and A MASSIVE ONE TERABYTE OF HDD SPACE MOTHERf*ckER maybe 200.

and while im here how the f*ck do I change the grey colour for the currently open application it's not in the theme settings? image was resized by imageshack but you should still get what I mean

I'll give you a bit of history before I ask the question.

My old account was 1st gtaROCKER, which I set up in December '10. I always hated the username, and I decided a week ago to make a new account and request a ban for the other one. I mostly accesed that with my basic computer, but the browser is so old that copy&paste doesn't work, among other things. So, I got my old account banned, and made a new one (this one).

A few days ago, I tried logging on to GTAF with my better computer for the first time. But, when I logged on, it just said "You have been banned". I couldn't access any other pages, thus I couldn't log in to this account.

So, what do I do? How do I log in on that computer? HELP!

Try downloading a new browser and try it.

Make sure you are logged out of every GTAF account on every browser and try logging in with your new account.

Yeah just clear the cookies and it should work (I'm assuming you logged in on the banned one?).

Instead of making a new account you could have just asked for a name change.

I cleared out all my cookies, temp. files and cache, but it still doesn't work. I'll just try it with a different browser then. I have 4 in total: Chrome, Firefox, Explorer and Opera. Oh, the choice!

BTW: You can't get a name-change on GTAF nowadays. You could a few years ago, but not now. You just have to make a new account.

Don't forget Safari and Konqueror

As for the name change thing; that's just stupid.

Why is DDR ram so expensive? 2GB of some unbranded DDR costs $43 whereas 8GB of dual channel GSkill DDR3 ram costs $46 on Newegg, just wondering.

While I'm here, whats a good FTP like file hosting service that's free? Mostly for stuff like schoolwork, forum sigs, maybe some tunes or other stuff etc.

For some reason, perhaps my semi-functioning brain, I can't find the old chat topic in this section so I'll put it here, as it's sort of a question- has anyone seen this?

(Found here.)

8430 MHz. Absolute insanity and something like 120MHz past the previous world record. I'm rather excited to see how they perform in the real world...

What's even more interesting, according to AMD's blog, AMD FX CPUs can OC above 5GHz on air.

tbh it seems pointless, also that f*ckers gonna put off so much heat I reckon you'd need a pretty tank cooler for it. Wasn't the World record for an OC like 5GHz on liquid nitrogen?

Also cores 2? I thought Bulldozer was an eight-core CPU?

Different CPUs output different amounts of heat. Some CPUs might require LN2 to run @5GHz, some might be able to achieve that on air cooler. AFAIR AMD said that 5GHz will be reachable on sub-$100 cooling solutions.

Top-end Bulldozers are quad module CPU. One module equals 2 cores (though those aren't "full" cores, so it's more accurate to say "quad module CPU" than "octa core CPU").

For OC purposes, 3 modules were disabled to achieve the highest possible frequency. It's a common practice.

5GHz stable on air, according to the AMD blogs. Presumably, that's not on the standard AMD cooler but still, that's an incredible power output for stable, air-cooled system. Though the liquid helium run is in reality pretty pointless, it does show just how far the new generation chips might be capable of being pushed- just think how 5GHz stable on air could play out on a good water-cooling system!

The old record was about 8,300MHz from memory, done on an old Intel Celeron chip-set. The SB record is over 1GHz below the new record.

Nope, 6 cores (3 modules) were disabled. This is a normal occurence for extreme overclocking.

//edit: I see you've edited your post wink.gif

I'll let myself quote my post, because it ended up on prev page:

AFAIR WR in OCing SB is something barely over 6000MHz. smile.gif

What factors could affect the speed of a wireless connection? Basically, the other day we had a power cut, and the electricity was off for a full day, and ever since then, the speed of my internet connection has been terrible. I've tried resetting my router, 'repairing' the connection, turning firewall on and off, and everything else I could think of, but I'm still getting a sh*tty connection. At first I thought I may be getting capped by Virgin, due to excessive downloading, but their website states that the maximum cap would be 12 hours, yet this is now the 4th day of getting sh*t connection.

Hovering over the 'wireless' thing in the bottom right of the taskbar, it usually says my speed is 300 Mbps, but as of lately, it stays around 11-14 Mbps. The dongle itself only has the orange light on it, which I understand/believe to mean that it's on a lower signal channel, as it usually goes onto the blue light, signalling a better connection.

This has happened only once before, but it was a matter of switching the router off and back on, but now nothing is working.

The thing that made me believe I was being capped by Virgin is that the signal is great, up until I open Firefox, whereupon the signal shoots down t0 11. confused.gif

(Sorry about picture quality...was only print-screening as evidence for Virgin.

So I happen to have aquired 6 seasons of a television show on my computer, mostly DVD rips, if I was to burn them to DVD (A season per disc is what i'm aiming for), what software do you recommend to burn? Is the one already on Windows 7/Media Player any good?

First make sure the problem is with the wifi and not the router or modem itself. Try a wired connection to the router. If that has problems as well then try going directly to the modem. If they are one in the same then never mind that last part.

Next I would try either another wifi device; laptop or mobile device with wifi and see what they get.

In the end if it's all still failing no matter what else you try then call your ISP. It could be that the modem/router took a power spike when the power came back on.

Windows DVD maker.

DVD Architect Studio.

Sony Vegas Pro HD.

@Wreckless Jake

Normally for the USA shows are around 20 episodes per season.

You're not likely to get a full season of what is normally a 1-hour show onto a single 4.7GB DVD, that is without losing a lot of quality. Even a dual-layer DVD it would be hard to do without losing quality.

This if you want it to be like a normal DVD movie disc might be. If you just want to burn it as data then you could do it if they are small enough or just a few episodes per season.

http://www.dvdflick.net/ is a nice simple to use program. The problem is that's so simple that you can't get a whole lot of options either. You can create chapters based on each video or per minute or just let it create X-number of chapters, but you can't create chapters where you really want them to be within each video. You can do menus but you're limited to what they have to offer, not a whole lot of customizing there.

Don't get me wrong, it's great in a pinch for a simple, fast, dirty DVD creator but if you want something you can really customize with then this ain't it.

Well, that's great... I came hope from classes today and my video card started giving my major artifacts. I've done what I can to fix the problem myself but the poor thing is obviously on its last breath - so now I'm in the market for a replacement.

So far I'm looking at this 6870:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814127545

But the 6850 (~$150) and the 6770 (~110) are on my list as well. Clearly I'm not looking for a huge upgrade, just a well-valued replacement.

My other specs:

Windows XP

Q6600 CPU

2GB RAM

Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3L MOBO

600W StealthXStream PSU

My RAM and CPU will no doubt be a bottleneck if I upgrade too high. Everything in that computer has to be about 4+ years old.

My main worry is that the newer cards might not fit my motherboard (Does PCIE 2.0 vs 2.1 make a difference?) and that the 6770 might actually be a downgrade.

Sooo, any suggestions? colgate.gif

What card is the old one?

How old is it? It might be possible you can RMA it to the maker to get a replacement.

It was a 8800GTX, factory overclocked. It's about 3 years old and is actually an RMA of a broken 8800GTS. Since I don't have a proper receipt and I've had it for so long, I doubt it's still under warranty.
