The True Crime games are very underrated IMO, wish the series would’ve continued on.

They kinda did if you count sleeping dogs

I really wanted to like true crime nyc but it’s way too buggy

I believe Driver San Francisco was looking WAY better than GTA at the time, but the gameplay sucked (you couldnt really walk around as a character).

Real shame, that one.

Also: Driver Parallel Lines had something awesome: 2 time periods, the 70s and in the present.

The cars and the enviroment also were different in the time periods if I remember correctly.

I hope someday there will be a new (good, like parallel lines) Driver game again, so R* can have some more healthy competition.

But then again, its Ubisoft now so what Im asking is nearly impossible.

Ubisoft was trying to return to the roots with that one since you couldn't do that in the first Driver game either. And I guess they thought it would be awkward if you could walk around, hijacking cars without being able to fight or do something else, hence the cheesy shifting mechanic.

If I recall right Ubisoft killed the franchise entirely and chose Watch Dogs to be Driver's successor.

Never new this, but its a good thing to know because it explains a lot.

Guess it would have been better if they would have done the same as they did in Parallel Lines, but that will always remain a theory.

And cheesy that shifting was, absolutely!

You are correct, I just read that they did something like that.

Shame, because I dislike Watchdogs so I guess the hope of a new Driver game is now completely gone.

Even an old Driver game that is upgraded to todays standards would actually have a chance because R* is taking ages with GTAVl.

And I dont believe Im the only one still playing GTAO/V because there simply isnt a good alternative.

Speaking of Sleeping Dogs it is currently on sale on the Xbox Microsoft store for $4.49

cant remember

I haven't played too many "GTA clones" but for me:

Mafia series:

- Better graphics
- Car physics more engaging

- More complex/challenging wanted system and car stealing system

- Better selection of cars in traffic (I don't mean that they are all cool classics, but they are more plausibly distributed)

- Better gunplay and NPC reactions to being shot

Saints row series:

 - Fully customizable player character and many more clothing and hair options

The last GTA is nearly a decade old now, so I'm hoping those more recent games (Sleeping Dogs, Mafia Trilogy,..) have set the bar for what R* needs to top.

Scarface: The World is Yours

A 2006 game that does NPC interaction better than GTA V did. Game has over 150 unique NPC's each with their own unique dialogue, personality traits and almost every one of them has a unique conversation Tony can have to earn balls. Plus as the game progresses more and of these NPC's begin to respect Tony, addressing him by his name or apologizing frantically if they bump into him.

Game also did the personal vehicle via mobile system long before Johnny on the spot existed, much better than having to always stash a unique vehicle in your garage or it was lost forever

GTA V: Has a greet button that for some reason makes you insult them without intention after the first line. And standing next to someone longer than 5 seconds warrants being shot by the police. GG, at least Red Dead 2 absolutely nailed it.

Also: the whole buy coke ---> smuggle coke ---> sell coke gameplay loop is better than any of the GTA Online businesses combined:

Im only adding thibgs not listed in this topic

Mafia games except Mafia 3, how police handle basic crimes or violations.

Mafia 3 for that city, yes that map is one of best game map Ive ever played. Every part feels different, dlc even added rural town.

Watch Dogs 2 is a masterclass in open world level design. I don't think any other game has captured the essence of California quite like Ubisoft has. Traversing terrain and rooftops not only feels fluid but looks baller as f*ck. It made the hood slide mechanic in GTA V look like babbies first mocap. I think it may even top RDR2 in that regard. The animators really went all out and deserve more recognition for it. Shooting a gun actually sounds impactful thanks to great sound design and as a result firefights are genuinely unnerving. It's so f*cking fun just calling the police on gang members and watching a 20 minute shootout unfold between the AI. The ability to cause chaos without having to participate in it is criminally underused in sandbox games and Ubisoft nailed it.  Another amazing feature is the way multiplayer is integrated with singleplayer; allowing PvP encounters to begin organically without the need for loading screens. It's such a fantastic game.

Overall, it's mad depressing to think Rockstar is still playing catch up with PS2 games feature wise. The yoga minigame is a prime example of executive meddling.

Im reading a lot positive about Watch Dogs 2 lately. Maybe I give it try, but Im not interested in any other sanbox game set in California. So thats why Im avoiding it, that place is overused in games or movies and in real life its completely different experience.

Hey I completely forgot about Saboteur, GTA like war game set in Paris.

That games was very unique in settings and fun. There was also some interesting game designs, but it will not work because its war game. It has also climbibg on buildings.

There was one thing that strikes me a lot, than when my player is shooting from rooftop, wermacht soldiers go to doors of that building and teleports to door on roof. Small detail but very effective..

GTA cops will definitely dont look like idiots, when climbing ladder to be instantly killed.

The driving was crap, story was sh*t and the physics were pretty meh. There wasn't that much to see or do around the map compared to GTA 5 but the hacking was exponentially more fun than in the first game. Parkor, hacking and the AI were really fun.

Game was set in SF and surrounding areas, like Oakland and Silicon Valley, which aren't that overused in games. Plus it was beautifully crafted to the point I am not sure R* could pull off better San Fran. Give this game a chance, it's not expensive these days, and very often there are discounts for it.

Mafia 2:

  • The ability to steal guns, clothings and food from stores; comes in handy if you're short on cash. Meanwhile, GTA won't let you loot the store after killing the store owner.
  • Police actually going after you if they see you carrying a gun. In the GTA games, the police don't bat a single eye at you carrying a minigun or rocket launcher out in the open. They won't even mind if you drive a tank on the streets!
  • The wanted system. In GTA, if you re-spray your car or stay out of the wanted zone, they just instantly lose interest in you and act as if you never existed. In Mafia 2, after you lose the cops, they'll patrol the city looking for you and go after you on sight. Re-spraying and changing the licence plate on your wanted car won't get the cops off you if you're wanted, you'll need to change your clothes if you truly want to lose them.
  • Cars that you bring to the garage stay in the garage. You don't need to worry about losing a cool car you found in the streets, it'll always stay in your garage for you to drive later on as long as you store it beforehand.

I never played Saints Row, but I've got to admit, their K-Boom radio is amazing. 1.5 hours of pure joy. Wish R* still had it in them to produce something like that, sadly, WCTR in SA was the last talk station that had funny or interesting segments that added to the game experience:
