South Park [Season 23]

Recommended Posts

Mister Pink

We're about half way through Season 23. Some decent episodes so far.

Some highlights.. Randy Savage-like character, male to female trans woman taking part in female sports and winning everything.

Idk man, South Park is still somewhat watchable, which is an achievment in itself, but their political commentary has been off for a long time.

Currently doing a rewatch on the early seasons,  in seasons 1-4 the series had so much charm. The "boys being boys" stuff, the focus on a little town and it's iditiotic inhabitants, the crude optics,  Chef, the random crazyness...

Good times

Still a good show that I watch yearly but I think sooner or later we have to accept that it had a better charm in the past.

There are a few old seasons on Netflix now that I'm going through which is fun. But all those things you describe can somewhat applied to seasons now. It's still there. However, I get what you mean. Maybe, it's just because we're seeing them for 20 years now. It's kind of unprecedented to have a animated adult TV show have such a long run. Somethings are kept sweet because they only intended 2 seasons. For example The Office UK or Extras. 23 seasons of anything is a lot. Having said all that, I never over-indulged in South Park. I always just dipped in and out and have been super casual.

As for the political commentary or social commentary, I think PC family is spot on. Events like Strong Woman coming second to a trans man, it's just one of those things that we'll all have to reconcile in a post-woke culture. And I think good art/comedy is great a pointing out that irony.  But in the end, it's just comedy.

So, I just recenty watched the entire 23rd season of South Park, and what do I think of it? I'd say it's fine. Not amazing like the previous seasons, but pretty good overall. I'm not gonna lie, I actually kinda enjoyed the Tegridy Farms story arc with Randy and Towelie. The ending way okay, but I certainly expected the season finale to be a little better than just bringing back Tegridy Farms again. I'd say one season of Tegridy Farms is more than enough. The highlight of the season for me would have to be episodes like "Board Girls", "Turd Burglars" and "Basic Cable", all of which focus on different characters. When season 24 of South Park comes along, I want something among the lines of those episodes rather than one long story arc that lasts over half a season. While I said that I enjoyed the Tegridy Farms story arc, I can't help but feel that if Matt and Trey will keep on doing it for future seasons, it's gonna overstay its welcome pretty soon. I hope season 24 will put an end to the whole Tegridy Farms schtick with Randy and give other characters their much needed chance to shine. Like, FFS, can't Stan and Wendy just interact one more time? How long has it been since the two interacted? I think I've lost track. I would love to see Stan and Wendy interacting with each other again, even if it's just for a brief moment. As I said before, season 23 is fine, and I hope season 24 will be even better. Hopefully, Matt and Trey won't do another presidential election-themed episode or story arc, because we all remember how that backfired in season 20. If you screwed up that time, I don't think it's worth the risk of doing that again.

Do Matt and Trey still want to do South Park?

Or is the focus more on all their other projects?

Considering that Comedy Central renewed the show up to the 26th season, I'm sure that Matt and Trey will eventually do South Park in a few months.

It kinda sucks that we have to wait until fall for the next season to start.

I know Matt and Trey have said they’ll continue making South Park episodes for as long as Comedy Central keeps renewing it. Just wondering if they are looking to take South Park away from TV, after their #cancelsouthpark campaign. Evolve the South Park franchise more into a gaming genre or movies.

It's like a "love-and-hate" relationship for Trey and Matt. I've read many of their interviews and it's complicated: They have an "on-and-off" interest in continuing the show. However, in the end, they always talk about their desire to keep doing it as far as they can. I think they are righteously attached to South Park and they feel so special about it. Oh, don't feel agitated by the #cancelsouthpark thingy. It's obvious they were ripping a new one for people who feel entitled to shout "cancel" for anything that offends them.

Matt and Trey are probably pitching some ideas as side projects. I remember them saying something like that but I can't recall where and when. To be honest, South Park is always going to be their top level. South Park is where Matt and Trey express themselves crystal clear. I watched BASEketball, Orgazmo and Team America: World Police (and listened the songs from The Book of Mormon) - they're all great but they don't feel as raw and edgy as South Park. That doesn't mean I don't want to see them doing other stuff, though. I consider any product worth seeing as far as Trey and Matt are involved because I believe they're the extremely talented comedy genius duo of this century.

Season 24 is officially out with the debut episode "The Pandemic Special." I've watched the episode and I'd say that it's freakin' great. Yeah, there is a lot of Tegridy sh*t going on (and I'm pretty sick of it) but overall they did a fantastic job... all worth the wait. Some of my favourite scenes and possible SPOILERS:

Spoiler
  • It seems like Randy is the cause of the pandemic. During his wild parties with Mickey Mouse while in China, he f*cked a bat and a pangolin. I actually thought something like this would happen.
  • As a very Cartman thing, he doesn't want the pandemic to end as he doesn't want to go to skewl.
  • Stan trying to help Butters break out of his vicious pandemic circle is a major plot point. But as I expected, Stan actually does it just because he got pretty sick of the lockdowns.
  • South Park Police blasting possible COVID exposures (elementary students, in particular) while Kickstart My Heart plays on the background... the scene stole my goddamn rocker heart.
  • President Garrison makes a comeback... and it does make so much sense.
  • Looting supermarkets... and toilet paper hoarding.
  • Death literally makes brief cameo appearances... sometimes with his little toy bike. And that often leads to some good little jokes.
  • One of my favourite scenes: While they're in class, Cartman knowingly takes off his mask and coughs on Kyle. Then, Kyle beats the sh*t out of him and the whole class engulfs in chaos. Then, the South Park police (now the teacher replacements) starts shooting but only on Token. The students are forced under quarantine because Token's hospitalization is related to COVID.

I didn't like the ending at all. Cartman that we know would never get emphathetic towards someone else when his own interest is on the line. It's just bad writing, really. And the "Help Butters" storyline in general wasn't interesting. Overall, still better than the last seasons, though. I had a couple of good laughs.
